The State History Museum presents the history of Armenia and contains unique collections of priceless relics and materials on Armenian history, culture and art from the dawn of its civilization to our days.

Its permanent exhibits demonstrate original items of material culture, which have come down to us from remote ages. The exhibition begins with objects relating to the period of Stone Age society. The most ancient exhibits here, simple obsidian implements were made by primitive inhabitants more than 600,000 years ago. Other items of more accurate workmanship, some of them even polished – such as stone axes, knives scrapers, spear and arrow heads – belong to a latter period – the Neolithic.

Matenadaran Institute Library was founded in 1959, before that the books were kept in the Holy Echmiadzin.

Just in front of the Matenadaran you will see a monument to the founder of the Armenian alphabet – Mesrop Mashtots and his disciple Koryun. Just in front of the building there are also monuments to eminent persons of medieval Armenia. After the creation of the alphabet in 405 the “Golden Age” started in Armenia, the sciences flourished, a lot of philosophical treatises and literary works were written. Huge books have been written on parchment and preserved carefully over the centuries. It is known that during the invasion of the enemies the Armenians rescued the book as they would save their children giving away the gold and other treasures.

Sports and Concerts Complex is located on a hill in Tsitsernakaberd Park. Parkland and the picturesque valley of the river Hrazdan supplement the volume of the complex.

The Temple of Garni is a classical Hellenistic temple in Garni, Armenia. It is perhaps the best-known structure and symbol of pre-Christian Armenia. It was probably built by king Tiridates I in the first century AD as a temple to the sun god Mihr.

Zvartnots Cathedral (meaning "celestial angels" in Armenian) is a 7th-century centrally planned aisled tetraconch type Armenian cathedral built by the order of Catholicos Nerses the Builder from 643-652. Now in ruins, it is located at the edge of the city of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) in Armavir Province of Armenia.

The Khor Virap. A historic monastery is situated in the unbelievable surroundings in the Ararat plain. Armenia was the first Christian nation in the world, while the first chapel here was built in the 7th century. Later it grew into an entire complex. Due to Mount Ararat, which is the symbol of this region, the monastery has been also a pilgrimage site for centuries.

The monastery of Geghard contains a number of churches and tombs, most of them cut into the rock, which illustrate the very peak of Armenian medieval architecture. The complex of medieval buildings is set into a landscape of great natural beauty, surrounded by towering cliffs at the entrance to the Azat Valley.

Etchmiadzin Cathedral is located near the city of Yerevan. It was constructed in the fourth century by Gregory the Illuminator. The legend has it that he had seen Jesus in his dream, hitting the ground with a golden hammer exactly where the cathedral was was supposed to be built. The name Etchmiadzin can be roughly translated to 'The place where God descended". The cathedral is the oldest state-built church in the world. There are many precious manuscripts and other artifacts inside this temple, among which, the spear that was allegedly used to stab Jesus' heart.

Noravank (meaning "New Monastery" in Armenian) is a 13th century Armenian monastery, located 122km from Yerevan in a narrow gorge made by the Amaghu river, near the city of Yeghegnadzor, Armenia. The gorge is known for its tall, sheer, brick-red cliffs, directly across from the monastery. The monastery is best known for its two-storey Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) church, which grants access to the second floor by way of a narrow stone-made staircase jutting out from the face of building.

Haghartsin Monastery, Tavush Haghartsin complex is located high in the woody mountains, where there are eagles and the name of the monastery from Armenian is translated as “games of eagles”. The image of this proud and strong bird can often be seen on the walls of Hagartsin.

Sevanavank Monastery. On the Peninsula of Lake Sevan, two cross-shaped churches dating from 874 typify the Armenian architectural Renaissance following almost two centuries of Arab oppression. The remains of a 10th-11th century domed hall are of interest, as is the gavit (canopy) of the church of the Apostles renowned for its unique wooden capitals, now displayed at the State Museum of Armenian History. The Museum also houses the beautifully carved doors of the Sevanavank Monastery, dating back to the 12th and 16th centuries, along with a stone relief.

The Tatev Monastery is an 8th-century monastery located on a large basalt plateau near the Tatev village in Syunik Province in southeastern Armenia. Build on an ancient pagan warship sight, the monastic ensemble stands on the edge of a deep gorge of the Vorotan River. Tatev is known as the bishopric seat of Syunik and played a significant role in the history of the region as a center of economic, political, spiritual and cultural activity.
