It has been nine weeks since the eUS started their Asian campaign, so the ninth edition of The Week That Was (TWTW) is here again to cover the most recent developments. Three iron regions were attacked, one nation was conquered, and the capital of a second came within firing distance in the past seven days. Let’s get started.

Asia

eChina extended an olive branch of peace to eHungary
and eRussia earlier in the week, to end their conflict

China
China Seeks Peace With Phoenix, Is Rejected; Looks to EDEN
Seeking a peaceful resolution to their conflict with Phoenix, eChinese President, The Samurai, presented Phoenix with a non-aggression pact (NAP) which would have been mutually beneficial to both sides and allowed eChina to continue its development. The first signs of the NAP being rejected came in Day 810, as eHungary passed legislation building a quality 5 (Q5) hospital in Inner Mongolia, further reinforcing its plans to stay put; EDEN backers have started a couple of resistance wars in the region to distract eHungary and cause an annoyance there. As Day 812 unfolded and everyone fought everyone, it became even more apparent that Phoenix rejected the peace overture and instead reignited the conflict with eChina as its allies were taken back by other battles raging elsewhere.

A result of eChina’s spurned attempts at peace, and subsequent Phoenix attack, is that the Sol affiliate has more strongly considered joining EDEN. eChinese media has been awash in articles advocating membership in EDEN, but whether or not eChinese leadership will join the alliance while eRussia and eHungary bear down on the country is not immediately known. Regardless, the list of mutual protection pacts (MPPs) for eChina has grown in recent days and includes several prominent EDEN powers among them.

eRussia’s successes in China prompted the ePhilippines to region swap through eChina to block further campaigns by the Phoenix power, but both eRussia and the ePhilippines had resistance wars (circled) to contend with on Day 813

Russia Invades China, Philippines Region Swap to Block
Amidst the events of Day 812, eRussia launched its first offensive against eChina in nearly 30 days, conquering Liaoning and Xinjiang while a distributed denial of service (DDoS) against eRepublik neutralized abilities to intervene in the battle’s closing hours. With the victories and successful suppression of a resistance war (RW) in Xianjing-- although a second was started on Day 814-- eRussia holds the keys for a potential eSerbian region swap to Liaoning, which would give the Phoenix power access to its first non-grain high resource region; by holding iron-rich Liaoning, eSerbia’s economy could benefit immensely and EDEN would be dealt a psychological blow as its original campaign to topple Phoenix’s three iron regions in Asia would have found only one of those three regions away from Phoenix’s hands.

When eRussia’s victories looked certain, the ePhilippines began a curious journey across China, swapping for eight regions in order to cut any further eRussian advances. Three RWs sprouted along the ePhilippine trail in order to reopen China for Phoenix’s advance, with success taking place for the Phoenix-backed forces in Tibet. Additional region swapping on Day 814 involved the ePhilippines advancing in Guangdong, Fujian, Gansu, and tiny Ningxia, all designed to further constrict eRussia’s mobility in China. (These latest swaps are not reflected in the map below).

Tibet would enable eRussia to continue its attacks on eChina by opening
the path to the enclave region of Bihar, which would continue to block eChina

Tibet Comes Under Attack from Both Sides
As Tibet was returned to eChina, the eRussians and ePhilippines both attacked Tibet, with the eRussian attack taking place 9 seconds (that’s right-- seconds) ahead of the ePhilippine strike. Although both battles are secured, should the eRussian battle turn in Phoenix’s favor, the outcome of the ePhilippine battle will be irrelevant. Tibet would enable eRussia to border the eChinese enclave of Bihar, a naturally Indian region, which the ePhilippines would not be able to defend. As consequence, eChina would remain initiative-locked and unable to counterattack the eRussians. Also a concern for the eUS is that eRussia is growing a larger border with eIndia; were they to declare war on eIndia, the eUS-loaned fortress region of Karnataka could be the eRussian target, if eSerbia does not attack it first. However, as eChina’s fortress region of Beijing borders Liaoning, eRussia could simply attempt to attack eChina’s most important region as the ePhilippines takes other options away from the Phoenix country (EDIT: eRussia did, indeed, attack Beijing on Day 815). Neither battle looks winnable for either attacker at the moment, so we may see additional attacks on Day 815.

India and Iran
USA-Held Karnataka Targeted by Phoenix-Backed Resistance
Part of a multi-faceted diversion attack, Phoenix super-elite, Battalgazi, opened a RW in Karnataka, the eUSA’s rented high iron region, on Day 812. With a fortress region and economic powerhouse under fire, the eUS was stunted in its European advances and unable to come to eChina’s aid; as a result, it spent a hefty amount of damage protecting it from any chance of being conquered. In response, the call came from The White House for eUS citizens to move to Karnataka and improve its defense against attack-- as eSerbia sits in nearby Sindh-- or from any attempted RW in the future.

Iran’s Relationship with Phoenix Becomes Strained
Amidst the activities of Days 812-813, Phoenix Headquarters observed reduced commitment by eIranian citizens in Phoenix battles and accused eIran of misunderstanding its role within the alliance. The response has been that elements of eIran have reconsidered their foreign relations and some are even asking whether eIran should change sides. Back room dealings will abound in the coming days, as Phoenix and eIran look to mend ties while EDEN may attempt to draw a disgruntled adversary on its side. Switching gears to real life (RL) very quickly, the situation in Iran should remain in everyone’s mind while approaching eIran’s foreign affairs and alliance status. The country and its people are under almost unprecedented government crackdowns as protestors attempt to assemble against the Islamic Republic’s 31-year anniversary, and related communications blackouts could impact the eIranian leadership’s ability to respond to questions from Phoenix and EDEN’s leaders. At the very least, eIran’s leaders will have larger issues on their minds than what side to take in an online game. (END REAL LIFE DIGRESSION)

Pakistan Declares War on Iran
Late on Day 814, ePakistan declared war on eIran, with the intention of beginning a three-way training war with them and eIndia and to secure its natural region of Balochistan. A second byproduct is that ePakistan, by activating eIran's MPPs, will now have active wars with eRussia and eSerbia, and can begin to region swap with them if the time arises and eChina does not continue RWs in the bordering Chinese regions.

Asia Minor

eGreece’s victories give the country plenty of options in the coming days

Greece Restarts Attacks on Turkey
eGreece jump-started the war in Asia Minor, which was originally a major front but had cooled to a standstill in the past 2-3 weeks. With back-to-back victories in the Aegean Coast of Turkey followed by an overtime victory at Central Anatolia, eGreece has struck initial success in the conflict. Central Anatolia reportedly holds as much as 1/3 of eTurkey’s companies, so the loss there could damage eTurkey’s economy with time. And eGreece can keep initiative in the region indefinitely, as their victory in Central Anatolia allows the EDEN member to block almost every remaining eTurkish region.

The Americas

North of Brazil was ePeruvian (red) for 24 hours, but fell in an RW
before ePoland could cross into the region and inherit its glut of resources

Peru Attacks, Conquers North of Brazil
For the third time, ePeru attempted an attack on the eBrazilian fortress region and resource haven of North of Brazil (No😎, and successfully conquered the region for the first time on Day 813 after an hour-long overtime battle which featured extensive EDEN and Phoenix tanking and military involvement. The intent was to hold the region just long enough for ePoland to successfully region swap into it, thereby successfully gaining its first high iron region. The first part of the plan successfully came to be, although...

ePoland’s swapping campaign took place shortly after ePeru’s conquest
of North of Brazil, but their ultimate advance-- if happening-- will have to wait

Resistance War Retakes North of Brazil, Stalls Polish Advance
Almost immediately after NoB fell to the ePeruvians, Phoenix backed a resistance war for North of Brazil (statistics here before ePoland was able to complete its region swapping through eSpanish Aragon, Castilla La Mancha, Andalucia, and the Canary Islands and subsequently launch its own attack on ePeruvian NoB. As a result, the outcome of the RW single-handedly determined ePoland’s ability to cross into South America, and Phoenix’s victory in returning NoB to eBrazil on Day 814 prevented ePoland’s ability to swap with ePeru for the same region. Without a declaration of war on eBrazil by ePoland, the New World’s largest country will not be able to enter NoB unless ePeru were to start and win in NoB for a second time-- and ePoland be able to swap ahead of an RW.

Brazil Suppresses Series of Polish-Backed Resistance Wars in Venezuela
During the fight for NoB and subsequent RW, ePolish leadership sponsored five RWs in
Zulian, Central Western Venezuela, Central Venezuela, Llanos, and North Eastern Venezuela to distract eBrazilian citizens; none of these attacks had any success either on their own or as a distraction, as NoB fell to the resistance and out of the ePeruvians’ hands.

North America Sees First Combat in Months
Yet another distraction RW commenced on Day 812, taking place in eCanadian Delaware, a region given to eCanada for strategic interests as any attack by the eUK or eFrance into the eUSA would either end in the Northeast or start a war with eCanada after contacting an eCanadian border region. The first military action taking place in North America since eUK forays into the eUS during the First Battle of Kyushu was easily secured and never seriously contested by either side.

Europe

Europe on Day 815
France
USA Conquers Upper Normandy, Removes France from Map
Day 810 featured two major EDEN victories in Europe, the first coming as the eUSA toppled the final eFrench region of Upper Normandy and ended EDEN’s active wars against the former PEACE member state. Consequently, eFrance’s series of MPPs mobilized against the eUSA and eSpain were removed, and eFrance failed its bid to return to the map later in Day 810 as all six RWs started in eSpanish France were secured. The eFrench have not attempted an uprising in the past days, and have been divided near evenly between eSpain and ePoland, further complicating their bids at resurrecting the country. On Day 811, the eUS withdrew from france, leaving eSpain with the regions conquered by the eUS and keeping the responsibilities of occupation of France with eSpain. eSpain has shown signs that it plans to stay in at least parts of France, as it is planting infrastructure in the high wood region of Aquitaine.

The eUS successfully overcame eFrance’s final region and Phoenix backing on Day 810, and eFrance remained removed from the map after 6RWs (circled) failed

Great Britain and Ireland
EDEN Moves Within Striking Distance of London
With eUSA victory in West Midlands on Day 808, the eUS pushed further on the eUK, winning at South East of England (SEoE) amidst heavy tanking on both sides on Day 810. The victory put the eUS on London’s doorstep, but given the heavy cost in winning SEoE, the eUSA was unable to act on Day 811 and then the war exploded on Days 812-813, denying the eUS any chance to March on the eUK capital. The eUS has since suppressed a Phoenix-backed RW in SEoE, and has started a few battles on the West Midlands to continue its initiative block of the eUK as recent events have pulled EDEN focus away from Great Britain. For more detail on the affairs in the eUK, see Day 810’s coverage. As the situation in South America and Asia has intensified, the war in the eUK has taken a backseat for the time being. But if and when London comes under fire, rest assured that the Great Britain theater will pick up in intensity once more.

Norway Reenters United Kingdom
Although eNorway formerly held Scotland, because of eUS and eSwedish occupations of the West Midlands and the North East of England respectively, eNorway was unable to move further on the eUK with its activated MPPs which would bring more of EDEN to the battle. Consequently, the eNorwegians declared war on eSweden on Day 809, and began to swap back into the eUK the following day. With its swapping of Midtjylland in Denmark, eNorway also assures eSweden’s protection from any eUK counterattack, having blocked the path towards their Scandinavian neighbor and EDEN ally.

eIreland may enter the fight, if only
to gain control of Northern Ireland

Ireland Contemplates Involvement As Northern Ireland Takes Center Stage
The eUK’s neighbor to the west, eIreland, has sat idly by as all the action unfolded in Great Britain. More recently, eIrish sentiment has flared and expressed an interest in joining in the conflict, although the eIrish have yet to agree on whose side. Long ago, eIreland was a cornerstone member of the failed FORTIS alliance, and was a participant in eUS-hosted war games; however, the main motivating factor for eIreland has been to take control of Northern Ireland a controversial region in RL as it has constituted part of the UK, but holds heavy cultural ties with its geographic neighbor on the island, the Republic of Ireland, which has given way to domestic violence on multiple occasions. With Northern Ireland as the goal, the eIrish people have not decided which side will allow eIreland to gain the region; on the one hand, some believe that siding with the eUK could secure Northern Ireland as a reward-- although GLaDOS and other eUK leaders have denied that they would part with the region-- while others believe that siding with EDEN would lead to Northern Ireland being given to them as part of the spoils.

After a few days of debate, the eIrish leadership decided to instead declare war on eNorway, the country currently holding Northern Ireland. Whether eNorway would counterattack should the eIrish fail to win the region-- this paper hopes the eNorwegians would not-- remains to be seen. Similarly, whether an eIrish victory would be followed by an eUK-backed RW on Northern Ireland to return control to the eUK, will also have to wait for another week. Meanwhile, an RW commenced on Day 814, and if successful, the region would return to the eUK-- negating any relevance for the declaration of war on eNorway. From that point, the same “support or oppose the eUK” debate would likely resume in eIreland.

Central Europe

eCroatia’s first moves against eAustria are likely intended to secure
a bridge to Germany and France, and assist EDEN allies in their occupation

Croatia Declares War on, Attacks Austria for European Land Bridge
An event taking place behind the scenes concerned eCroatia’s relations with eAustria. After expressing interest in creating a land bridge to Germany, the two countries could not agree on mutually favorable terms and culminated in eCroatia declaring war on eAustria. The eCroats emerged from a 14-day period of relative silence and in attacking at Carinthia and Styria, began their movement towards eGermany. Day 815 included a continuation of this offensive on Salzburg. Whether or not eCroatia would attack the other eGerman region of Saarland is not known; regardless, the introduction of eCroatia in Germany would present a third EDEN country in occupying eGermany and would present further difficulties in letting eGermany return to the map. Once eCroatia successfully crossed through eAustria, the EDEN power could continue beyond Germany, region swapping with EDEN allies ePoland and eSpain into France and maybe even adding another front against the eUK.

Coming to the aid of eAustria were the eHungarians, who moments before publication attacked the newly eCroatian region of Styria. Because the attack is not on a natively eCroatian region, eCroatia could conceivably continue its offensive on eAustria into Day 816; however, with formidable eHungary counterattacking the EDEN nation, eCroatia may choose to stall its attacks and defend itself and its gains from the new Phoenix onslaught. The coming days will tell much about this front. Whether eCroatia tries to move closer to Germany while being attacked on its flank, or whether it turns to fight its regional rivals will remain to be seen.

Switzerland
New Swiss Government Attacks Spain
Mentioned in a previous article, eSwitzerland fell to a political takeover (PTO) by a Phoenix-friendly organization known as the Shaolin during the most recent Congressional elections, and elected a Shaolin-affiliated president in the elections for the country’s highest office. eSpain previously attempted to intervene and deny the Shaolin in eSwitzerland, an EDEN-aligned country, but failed. The eSwiss subsequently attacked eSpain at occupied Alsace early in the week, acting as a thorn in eSpain’s side while attempting to resist eFrance. Peace has been signed between the two countries, as the Shaolin government has presumably turned to internal matters and looks to solidify its control.

Week in Review
Week 9 brought forth a combination of new developments (ePeru’s victory in South America, eCroatia’s invasion, and changes of eIranian foreign affairs), reemergence of old storylines (the return of focus on China and eGreece-eTurkish battles), and resolutions of long-standing battles (the fall of eFrance). With it has also come a noticeable trend, that of Phoenix and EDEN spending money at an alarming rate.

At this point, the winner of the war will be the side who can make more with less, as the decreased gold supply in eRepublik (because of Lana and the like) has made starting war and tanking at its finish much more costly undertakings. The side who can better allocate its gold funds may win by virtue of being the last man standing. Whether the conquests by EDEN will increase its revenues, or the costs of battle will deplete them at an irreplaceable rate, has not been revealed; the same is true of the eUK and Phoenix, as it remains to be seen how long the eUK can survive with much of its industry in EDEN hands or how much Phoenix can invest in keeping the Royal Navy and the eUK civilians afloat. The war is far from over, and the next seven days will serve to hopefully clarify some of the dead-ends and new beginnings from this 9th week of war.

God Bless America,
