A very eventful week has come to an end, and it is time to go over all that has passed in the 8th edition of The Week That Was (TWTW). The Battle for Britain has been the headliner this week, but plenty of other battles have taken place in the New World in the past 7 days. Let’s get started.

Asia

Asia at the start of the week

Asia on Day 808, as the eUSA is reduced to one region in the area

USA Presence in Asia Reduced to Karnataka
Earlier in the war, China was the theater everyone followed, as the eUSA and EDEN surged towards Liaoning and Heilongjiang. Since then, eChina has developed itself into a viable young country and has all except three of its native regions (Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia are controlled by eHungary, while eRussia still holds Jillin). Meanwhile, the eUSA’s positions in the continent have been reduced to the high iron haven of Karnataka, as Phoenix-backed resistance wars (RWs) have returned former eUS territories to the eChinese and eIndians. A Phoenix-backed RW in Sichuan successfully removed the eUSA from China in Day 806, while Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh were successfully returned by Phoenix to eIndia while the eUSA has focused on the war in Europe.

Resistance Wars Dominate Action in Asia
The main action in Asia this week, as can be inferred from above, concerned RWs. During the course of the week, RWs broke out in eHungarian-occupied Inner Mongolia, eRussian-occupied North Korea, and eJapanese-occupied South Korea. Although these were all training wars, eChina also started an RW in the region of Uttar Pradesh on Day 807 to return the region to eIndia after previously region swapping with the eUSA to take Karnataka and Jharkhand from eIndonesia months ago.

Army members covertly caused resistance war mayhem
in Phoenix-controlled regions, but was the gold worth starting these RWs?

EDEN Backs Resistance Wars in Phoenix Asia
As the battle in the eUnited Kingdom intensified on Day 807 (see the “Europe” section), soldiers in the eUS Army started RWs in several Phoenix-occupied Asian regions to distract two-clickers and to siphon some damage from the European front. The RWs started in eSerbia’s occupied Pakistani regions of Punjab and Balochistan, along with eRussia’s occupied Ryanggang region and one RW in eHungarian-occupied Inner Mongolia.
Accompanying these Asian RWs was an additional eUS-backed campaign in eBrazilian-occupied Zulian. None of the RWs obviously had a chance of winning given virtually no significant EDEN backing, but the damage spent there to keep the walls from unexpectedly collapsing would have alternatively been sent to the front lines of Europe.

Asia Minor

The region looks so peaceful from outer space…

Tensions Remain in Region as Combatants Seek Allies
After several weeks of reduced combat in the region, as eIsrael recovered its territories and eTurkey dealt with internal turmoils, eIsraeli President, Joshua Hoss, approached the eTurks with a peace offer late last week which was categorically rejected by the junior Phoenix partner. Even though there has been no combat between eGreece, eTurkey, and eIsrael in nearly two weeks, it is clear that animosity still abounds in the region and could boil into war if the situation presented one side to attack the other in a position of strength.

That time may be approaching, as eTurkey spent the past week rebuilding its friends network; in the past week, eTurkey reestablished mutual protection pacts (MPPs) with eSerbia, eBrazil, eHungary, the eUK, eIran, and eIndonesia. Likely in interests of self-preservation, eIsrael declared its choice to join the Sol alliance. While eIsrael's decision was intended to remain neutral between EDEN eGreece and Phoenix eTurkey, whether or not the three countries representing three alliances will be able to coexist in Asia Minor will remain to be seen.

Southern Hemisphere

War Between Brazil and Peru Flares in the Amazon
In the background of the week’s affairs was an eBrazilian attack on the ePolish-friendly government in ePeru. You may recall from two weeks ago that eIndonesia was widely expected to move on the ePeruvian government and its high iron region; whether eBrazil’s attack on Southern Low Amazon-- which would have positioned eBrazil near ePeru’s iron-- on Day 804 was meant to seriously challenge ePeru or was intended to waste EDEN damage elsewhere is unclear. However, considering that eBrazil attacked the less strategic Northern Low Amazon later in the week, a damage wasting campaign meant to divert ePolish resources seems more likely.

ePeru, with ePolish and other military support, launched an attack on eBrazil’s North of Brazil region, a resource paradise with high iron and wood, and also medium diamonds and grain. The wall fluctuated for much of the battle, but was defended in the closing minutes as Phoenix forces rallied to the wall. The true value of this region to both Phoenix and EDEN was self-evident as militaries from both sides diverted resources to the battle and authorized berserk (fighting 10 times) campaigns to sway the outcome in its favor. Even though the North of Brazil is a resource haven, ePeru could not possibly plan to hold it and has now voluntarily exposed itself to counterattack by an adversary that greatly outnumbers it in size and MPPs. Some controversy surrounds the close of the battle, as suspicious eRussian citizens were banned for exploits use and the battle closed in EDEN's favor. Regardless, if the European theater eventually allows Phoenix to divert their resources to South America, EDEN’s one friend in the continent could be wiped out.

Europe
Great Britain

Great Britain and Western Europe on Day 808

EDEN Sets Boots on UK Soil
Without question, the EDEN barrage of the eUK was the main event of the week. The full-blown invasion of the eUnited Kingdom took place just prior to server reset on Day 803, as three EDEN nations launched five battles against the Phoenix member and its network of MPPs. The close of battle featured the eUSA and its 6 MPPs setting foot in Great Britain, having won the South West of England and Wales. Subsequent attacks on eUK regions by the eUSA front have stalled, as Phoenix has made a spirited effort in defense of the South East of England on several occasions, denying EDEN any chance to border the eUK capital of London. After twice being setback in SE England, the eUSA on Day 807 changed focus and launched two new attacks on the North West of England and the West Midlands, neither of which has been in the underground as elements of the eUSA military were redirected elsewhere.

Limited EDEN successes in overcoming Great Britain’s coastline defenses were made possible by the ability to attack twice and heal twice during the course of battle, but also by a myriad of blocking attacks from eCanada, eNorway, and eSweden, while eSpain and ePoland also fought eUK attacks on the European mainland which drained damage from the eUS-eUK battles. Between a decline of blocking attacks, Phoenix’s decreased attention given to these attacks, and the eUSA’s involvement in France (below) and Brazil, EDEN has had trouble capitalizing on its initial advances and Phoenix has demonstrated that to advance any further inland will be no small task. However, any possible counterattack by Phoenix or Phoenix-backed RWs to retake the occupied regions also seem unlikely to find success at this point.

to have an extended stay in the homeland of their English-speaking counterparts

The mayhem of Day 807 allowed eCanada to gain a foothold in the eUK, taking Scotland after eUK Prime Minister Dishmcds retreated the region to the EDEN attacker. Dishmcds’ retreat showed shrewd strategic insight, as in doing so, he effectively eliminated eNorway’s ability to intervene in the eUK and has forced eNorway to declare war against eCanada (which they did on Day 80😎, undermining their common MPPs solely to region swap. The retreat did allow eCanada to attack Northern Ireland and the North West of England, but both battles battles were secured (but not without controversy) and could suggest that eCanada overextended their reach by contesting two regions at once against the eUK and their 17 MPPs.

eSweden unexpectedly joined their EDEN allies in the eUK, as their block on the North East of England was minimally contested by Phoenix and inadvertently fell. This allows eSweden to block upcoming battles and help eCanada and the eUS by playing the role of “straddling” battlefronts which the other EDEN powers open. Were eSweden to simultaneously attack the North West of England with the eUSA and eCanada, for example, EDEN would be able to stretch the Phoenix front and fight to win any one of those fronts by deploying their military to whichever battle was favored-- of course Phoenix can also counter at any front, but more battles normally benefits the offense by giving them more options and the element of surprise as to which would receive their main push. In the mean time, eSweden has decided to attack Yorkshire & Humberdshire, and faces a moderately high wall after the 1/3 mark in the fight.

Although some territories have changed hands, this map shows that
EDEN has had no shortage of blocking options against the eUK

EDEN Members Block the UK
While the eUSA has been driving the main front of the Battle of Britain by virtue of its size and MPPs (which includes ePoland), eNorway and eSweden have been playing the important role of blocking the eUK and deflecting some damage from the main front. They take a big risk, as an unsuccessful conclusion to the Battle of Britain for EDEN would leave the eUK’s 17 MPPs in tact and would threaten the smaller EDEN countries’ existence, much like what happened to eFinland and other blocking countries during World War 3. eSweden did receive an unexpected victory in their battle for North East of England, but their greatest value to the EDEN campaign has been to siphon more damage from the main fronts.

When EDEN was briefly unable to block the eUK on Day 805, Prime Minister Dishmcds successfully took initiative away from eSpain and ePoland by attacking across the English Channel. The naturally French region of Picardy was briefly taken from ePoland by the eUK, although eSpain attacked Picardy the following day and removed the eUK from the European mainland. There are no indications that either eSpain or ePoland will enter the Battle of Britain proper, but their lingering on the periphery of the eUK has been cause enough for the eUK to block them when able to launch its own attacks and not blocked elsewhere.

France

Europe on Day 802, when eFrance was at the peak of its insurgency

French Resistance Gains Initial Momentum
At the close of the past week, eFrance successfully emerged from under eSpain and ePoland’s occupation, and reached a peak size of 6 regions on Day 802. Notable among their conquests are the return of Aquitaine, eFrance’s traditional fortress region, which fell with the support of eFrance’s 9 MPPs assembled against eSpain at the time (there are now 10 opposing eSpain). The ability to sign several MPPs gave eFrance more viability on the battlefield, and the installation of a Q5 hospital in Aquitaine shortly after its liberation gave eFrench citizens a rallying point to fight and heal.

Spain Counterattacks
eFrance’s progress on the battlefield against eSpain came as a great concern to EDEN; as can be seen in the map above, some element of eSpanish-ePolish region swapping had been directed at minimizing eSpain’s borders with the resistance, since eFrance was gaining support and no active war involved the ePolish. Compared with Day 805, the eSpanish seemed to be on the ropes and hoping to hang on.

Day 805: eSpanish region swaps prepared the way for
counterattacking eFrance

The above map, although previously used to show EDEN movements on the eUK, differs from the Day 802 map in that eSpain controlled much more of eFrance on Day 805 after swapping with ePoland. It was at this point that eSpain set the stage for a massive counterattack which took place throughout Day 807, as eSpain opened battles against all five of the remaining eFrench regions:
- Lower Normandy
- Aquitaine
- Upper Normandy
- Limousin
- and Pays de la Loire
The results of this five-pronged attack carry major implications for the European battle, as eSpain won in three of the battles, including at Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire behind an intense tanking finish in the closing minutes of the battle (stats here). Although eFrance managed to win at Upper Normandy in the battles’ closing minutes, all of eFrance’s momentum as a conventional fighting force has been halted and eFrance has been constricted to one region; without any hospitals, their best bet at regaining other regions will be through RW unless they quickly build other hospitals. Moreover, they will be reliant on their MPPs to defend the new attack eSpain opened on Upper Normandy shortly after the previous battle’s close. If eSpain shows they can control the eFrench on their own, it will allow the eUSA, for the time being, to scale back its activity in eFrance and could result in greater focus and success on the eUK front for EDEN.

USA Supports Spanish, Attacks France
While eFrance was achieving its greatest successes against the eSpanish, President Jewitt made the decision to open battles against eFrance and in doing so, activated 11 MPPs on the eUSA’s doorstep. Attacks on Aquitaine and Lower Normandy have not been heavily contested, but the eUSA used these attacks to block eFrance while eSpain regrouped. It has proven to be a successful maneuver in the short-term, as eSpain’s success in their counterattack would not have been possible otherwise; however, unless eFrance is removed from the map, the country’s activated MPPs will menace the eUSA’s borders and could set the stage for the war returning to North America once more.

The eUSA conquered a fourth eFrench region on Day 807 along with eSpain's three wins, at Lower Normandy one hour after eSpain's battles closed in Day 808. The one surviving eFrench region, Upper Normandy, was recently retreated by eSpain, possibly to keep eFrance crippled rather than conquered.

Eastern Europe
Drama Surrounds Ukrainian MPP Choices
Much controversy in international media surrounded the foreign relations of eUkraine, a country with strategic importance for its high iron and its position as a neutral state in a very hostile neighborhood. After initially seeking peace with eHungary but being denied, the eUkrainian President feared that eHungary may attempt to move on the eUkraine and take its high iron region of Podolia for itself.
As a result, the President sought an MPP with eRussia which was also rejected; with few options remaining, the eUkrainian people accepted an MPP offer from eUSA President Jewitt. By virture of eRep geography, any eHungarian attack would also start a war between eHungary and arch rival eRomania, by the chain reaction virtue in eUkraine’s MPP with the eRomanians.

The controversy behind eUkraine’s decision underscores the anxiety about the rising Entente, an alliance seeking a third option in a traditionally bipolar New World. Phoenix and EDEN are too quick to see black and white without acknowledging the alliance’s curious configuration which allows its individual members to choose its own friends without threatening each other. For example, Phoenix is backing eFrance’s resistance, while the eUkraine has now reached out to EDEN for its protection.

Phoenix Initiates Resistance Wars in Poland
As part of a very explosive Day 807, Phoenix members initiated three RWs on ePolish occupied regions in France, including Champagne Ardennes, Saxony-Anhalt, and Polou Charentes. As with EDEN’s blocking attacks, these RWs are meant to divert some ePolish resources to suppressing them, but could have been valuable for eFrance as a success in any of them would open an active war with ePoland and increase the odds of liberating other regions conventionally. Because of ePoland’s massive population, a major undertaking will be necessary to restore the rest of eGermany-- considering the limited success Phoenix had the last time they tried a wide scale campaign against ePoland, ePoland will most likely shake off other RWs until Phoenix tries a comparable undertaking.

Finland Declares War on, Attacks Estonia

eFinnish ski troops crossing the border with eEstonia

A backdrop to the action in the eUK and eFrance, EDEN member eFinland declared war on tiny eEstonia, intending to secure a high grain region for itself at Pohja-Eesti. eEstonia successfully defended the single attack of this front on Day 804, with some eUK and eMalaysian backing. A second attack has not taken place, a great benefit to eFinland given one of eEstonia’s newfound friends that eFinland would have to fight against.

The Week That Was
The battle in the eUK has stolen the New World’s attention for much of the week. EDEN enjoyed initial success by getting into Great Britain, but seems to have been distracted by forays in eFrance and South America. Phoenix has frustrated deeper advances into the eUK, but has also been unable to reverse EDEN’s gains. Whether or not London comes under attack, or EDEN for some reason loses initiative in the eUK, will remain to be seen next week.

In a longer term focus, EDEN’s constant region swapping is undoing its alliances and could prove to be a breaking point if Phoenix was able to attack again. Unless eFrance is wholly conquered, the eUSA for example, will have the eUK’s 17 MPPs to consider along with 11 more from eFrance. Similar trends take place across EDEN, and because of eSpanish-ePolish, eUSA-eSpanish, and eNorwegian-eCanadian swapping, the alliance’s MPPs are unwinding. An organization founded on defense could find itself in trouble if a member state needs defensive help in the coming weeks.

God Bless America,
