As another week in New World warfare draws to a close, The Week That Was (TWTW) is here again, to give a recap and some insight on all the mayhem of the past 7 days. Although there weren’t many fireworks on the battlefield, the groundwork is set for more to come. Let’s get started.

Asia
China Attempts to Retake Jillin
eChina tried on three occasions to retake Jillin from the eRussians, coming close in their conventional battle with eRomanian aid, and failing in two attempted resistance wars (RW). Without any EDEN backing, it seems unlikely that eChina will retake the region, which would give the Sol member a bordering region with eHungarian Heilongjiang. Were this to happen, eHungary could easily start a blocking attack on eChina, and eRussia could also counterattack either from their own country or any of their eNorth Korean regions. At that point, foreign intervention on eChina’s behalf would probably be necessary.

Presidents Impeached in Russia, South Korea
eRussia impeached their sitting president, kotekzot, on Day 792. Dmissele, the Congressman who proposed the impeachment, cited in a newspaper article that kotekzot had previously applied for ePakistani citizenship. eRussia has been strafed with partisanship in recent months, and it remains to be seen whether an eRussian president will be able to finish a full term.
The impeachment of eSouth Korea’s president, which came on Day 788, coincided with the ruling Theocrats’ declaration that they were leaving eSK and looking to settle in eSpain. eSK’s upcoming elections will be interesting to monitor, to see what kind of government emerges.

Indonesia Attacks, Retreats Thailand

What does eArgentina’s wars list have to do with this?

Early on Day 793, eIndonesia attacked Southern Thailand and quickly retreated from it-- certainly a curious maneuver which went under the radar of most people and almost all media for several days. The more obvious explanation was that eIndonesia wanted to move on India, but for some reason changed their minds. However, looking at eThailand’s list of mutual protection pacts (MPP) reveals a different motive. Because eThailand has 2 MPPs, one of which was with eArgentina, eIndonesia is now at war with eArgentina by virtue of the chain reaction clause in MPPs-- this is convenient for the eIndos, as eArgentina is at war with ePeru and could region swap eIndonesia towards the ePeruvian border (doesn't the picture make sense now 😃). ePeru’s EDEN-friendly government only has a pair of MPPs (although more are pending at the time of this article’s publication), so a quick eIndonesian strike could pay dividends and possibly yield them a new high iron region. See the “Southern Hemisphere” section of this article for more information.

Serbia Moves Along the Land Bridge, Defeats RWs
eSerbian President, RavenSerbia, earned the easiest Battle Hero (BH) medal of his eRepublik career by attacking and conquering Sindh. The region swap for Sindh was quickly followed by eSerbia approving legislation to build a Q5 hospital there, suggesting that eSerbia plans to stay for a bit (now that the region also holds over 1200 citizens reinforces that idea). I have written in several articles that if eSerbia moved towards Sindh, it would suggest an offensive against eUSA-held Karnataka in the future, but we will have to see, as it is clear that eSerbia is in no hurry.

eSerbia can now see Karnataka from Sindh, but has to move through some eIndian regions first

During the course of the week, EDEN elites attempted three RWs on eSerbian positions along the bridge, at Balochistan, Sistan-Baluchistan, and Sindh. None were very seriously contested by the Resistance Force, but it seems apparent that eSerbia will not allow EDEN to liberate the portions of eSerbia’s land bridge which put it within striking distance of any of India or China’s high iron regions.

Asia Minor
Turkey Experiences Banning and Internet Misfortunes
A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack targeted eRepublik earlier this week, and the admins were able to isolate the originating IP addresses to Turkey; however, because they were unable to find the unique originating points, the admins banned the entire service provider, which gives internet to much of the real life (RL) Turkish population. Combine this with the permabanned status of BattalGazi, a senior Phoenix official, and several other prominent eTurkish citizens (including their President, Ertugrul Han), and eTurkey was severely limited for much of the week. Oddly, eTurkey failed in ousting their permabanned president on Day 793, which will leave eTurkey leaderless and without initiative for another week. eGreece deserves the good sportsmanship award for not taking advantage of their opponent's misfortunes.

Greece Returns Regions to Israel
With some breathing room following eTurkey’s dilemma, eGreece began to relinquish some regions to eIsrael. eGreece, however, still holds the Haifa District, which is the one region bordering eTurkey, protecting eIsrael from any further attacks.

Southern Hemisphere
EDEN and Australia Start RWs in South Africa
eBrazil and eSouth Africa have not had a great relationship, following eBrazil’s occupation of portions of eSA and the hacking of former president Ines Schumacher’s account and eSA forums, by nominally eBrazilian-affiliated hackers. Earlier this week, these events were cited once more. Former eUSA citizen and current commander of eAustralia's military, Cerb, initiated the resistance war (RW) on Gauteng on Day 788, citing that eBrazil needed to "get what's coming to them" for occupying eSA, violating eSA's trust, and then attacking and conquering portions of eAustralia. Even though the eSA president, Mark Morcom, acknowledged the benefit of regaining the high diamond region, he was clear in saying that eSA did not support the RW except as retaliation for eBrazil's actions.

Although he and eSA have wanted Gauteng returned to their country, it can be inferred that eSA only came to support the RW because of outside influence. However, either Cerb and eAustralia did this maneuver without telling eSA in advance, or not enough people were interested or able to move to eBrazil and fight, but the RW failed by a fairly close margin given the region’s significance to both sides. Additional EDEN elites participated in a failed RW against eIndonesian in the Western Cape, and eAussie elites started an unsuccessful RW in Llanos, a region occupied by eBrazil.

eSouth Africa’s location bridging South America and Asia has given
eIndonesia (purple) and eBrazil (yellow) reason to look at the country with interest

In response to the Gauteng RW, eBrazil voted to break off economic ties with eSouth Africa, suggesting that relationships in the Southern Hemisphere are going to cool and tensions may flare. eSA President Morcom confirmed that the situation in the Southern Hemisphere may heat up with his state of emergency, which claimed that an invasion was imminent and was calling on MPPs with the eUSA. That invasion came...

Indonesia Attacks South Africa
Earlier in Day 794, before this article’s publication, Mark Morcom’s predictions were proven correct, as eIndonesia launched two attacks on eSA’s Free State and Eastern Cape regions. The attacks on eSA came just before eSA’s MPPs could be called and a possible blocking attack or effective defense could be staged against the Phoenix power. Also notable is that eIndonesia, by attacking eSA, has opened another war with eBrazil, which will give the eIndos a second option at region swapping towards ePeru. Following intense tanking on both sides, both Free State and Eastern Cape regions were secured by eSA and their allies. The allies may need to stick around, however.

Argentina Plots to Declare War on South Africa
During the two battles between eIndonesia and eSouth Africa, eArgentina successfully region swapped for eIndonesia's Western Cape region. The move was concurrent with an eArgentine motion to declare war on eSA on Day 795, which seems destined to pass early on Day 796. A second front in eSA seems imminent, but eSA will benefit from having more MPPs signed by that time.

Europe

Western Europe as we know it on Day 795

EDEN Attacks UK, Puts Belgium on the Map
The end of last week featured an ePolish invasion of the eUK, which many thought would be the beginning of a fierce battle between EDEN and Phoenix over the island; even after the first battle, most were still expecting this to be more than a “fake war.” However, we have been mistaken, as ePoland and eSweden’s attacks on the eUK have been easily beaten back and seem to be little more at this point than initiative lock. Most recently, the eUK took advantage of EDEN’s inability to keep up the block and have put eSweden’s Midtjylland region in Denmark deep into the underground; just recently, the eUK also began an initiative blocking campaign on eSpain in the event that the EDEN power wanted to eliminate eUK's initiative with their own attack. Meanwhile, more and more people are wondering when the rest of EDEN, in particular the eUSA, will step into the fray against the eUK.

EDEN forces took advantage of the lull in action across the English Channel and brought eBelgium back to the map by winning an RW for Brussels, which is surrounded by eSpanish and ePolish-occupied regions and will be able to hold Congressional elections on the 25th; EDEN followed this move up by returning Flanders to eBelgium. The country is traditionally a Phoenix friend, but its upcoming elections will determine their Congress' composition.

France Reduced to One Region
In a hotly contested battle, EDEN was able to defeat eFrance and Phoenix military members at Franche-comte, reducing eFrance to their island region of Corsica. eRepublik geography will prevent eSpain from attacking this final region, so either ePoland will have to attack Corsica, or eFrance will remain with their one region unless RWs are successful in liberating others.

Resistance Wars Rage in Spain and Poland
Much of Europe’s activity has concerned a series of RWs in eSpanish and ePolish-occupied territories, all of which have failed and most of which were not seriously contested; however, none of these appeared serious until Day 793, when ePoland came under fire from 13 simultaneous RWs behind a formidable display of Phoenix coordination. The Resistance Forces managed to win 2 of these regions (Bavaria and Saarland), which will give eGermany the chance to exist long enough for its Congressional elections; however, ePoland can be strongly expected to counterattack once more, so whether or not eGermany makes it to Congress Elections Day will be determined in the next day. If they do make it, then the small Phoenix country will be afforded the chance to control its citizenship requests once more-- something which would otherwise be granted automatically, which would strongly benefit EDEN.

The tiny eCzech Republic may look to flex its muscles (or its ally’s)

Threats of War Come to Austria
Two things tend to happen during lulls in war activity: countries succumb to debate about domestic issues (see all sorts of hospital articles), or countries think about invading countries with whom they had never had an issue. The eCzech Republic is contemplating a peaceful merger with neighboring eSlovakia, and from there, attacking historically neutral eAustria with ePolish assistance. Alfred Ball, President of eAustria, responded, hoping that eAustria’s neutrality would be respected, and noted that eAustria would not take the attack lying down. This newspaper wonders what would happen to EDEN if the eCzechs do attack eAustria with ePolish support, and the rest of EDEN were to oppose? Could we be seeing a similar fate to ATLANTIS if tensions between the allies rose to such a boiling point? My instinct reaction is “no,” since the countries involved are small and peripheral to the EDEN alliance, but we will all have to wait and see what becomes of this hot air coming from the eCzech Republic.

Serbia Keeps Romania on Its Toes
eSerbia kept eRomania from pursuing the rebuilt eBulgarian nation by keeping it engaged in a series of RWs in Ruse, while also attacking occupied Sofia head-on. eSerbia has managed to keep eRomania bogged down in their own matters, only being able to help eChina and other EDEN allies sporadically, and also scored a major victory in their own right by retaking the eBulgarian capital of Sofia from eRomania.

There are a lot of targets to line up in the crosshairs for next week

In Review
This has been the second consecutive week of less activity, but recent events have shown signals of potential conflict sources for the coming weeks and months. As long as the major Phoenix-EDEN focus is Europe, the theater will not change much unless eGermany and eFrance create a string of victories or EDEN fully invades the eUK. It will be interesting to monitor whether eSerbia and eIndonesia move on iron resources in India and South America, or if the eCzech Republic looks to start a fight against a small neighbor while they have superpower backing.

God Bless America,

Lt. Scheisskopf
