The Week That Was, Week 5 Edition

Day 787, 14:16 Published in USA USA by Lieutenant Scheisskopf

It’s that time of the week again for this, the 5th installment of The Week That Was (TWTW). In a week which started with several contested battles in Europe, the week as a whole was been dominated by resistance wars (RW) and marked by a period of relative calm-- that is, until today’s attack on the eUK. Regardless, there is still a solid amount to cover. Let’s get started.

Asia
China
The United States Returns Four Regions to China
In a slow week in Asia, the most significant event involved the region swapping of four regions:
- Zhejiang,
- Jiangxi,
- Hunan, and
- Chongqing,
from the eUSA back to eChina on Day 785, leaving the eUSA only in possession of the inland Sichuan region. Notable among the Battle Heroes were two members of the eUS Airborne, Dreamer_KF, and the all-around good guy, Pauly Walnutz. The eUSA has obviously done good on its intention to return regions to China, but the swap also serves a strategic role by preventing any eRussian advance along the Korean Peninsula to border the eUS and be able to attack with its MPPs. From Sichuan, the eUS is still able to advance on eHungarian positions if a situation presented itself.

China before region swaps

After

Hungary Builds in Inner Mongolia, Holds Training Wars
Earlier in the week, eChina attempted to take Inner Mongolia from eHungary, and was defeated; shortly after the battle closed, eHungary established a defense system in the region, and held a couple of Resistance Wars (RW) in the region. The starters of each RW and the battle heroes for the resistance are all Phoenix members, suggesting that the defense system is intended to make sure that any resistance training wars in the region do not accidentally become conquered by the resistance force or hijacked by EDEN fighters. As mentioned previously, Inner Mongolia enables Phoenix to create a bottleneck that would allow Phoenix to counterattack nearly any EDEN movements towards Heilongjiang. This is highly desirable for Phoenix and will keep them in control of the Chinese theater of the war.

China Attacks Russian Possessions, North Korea Reappears
eChina attempted to attack eRussian-controlled Jillin on two occasions this week, and did not surprisingly fail to ouster the much larger Phoenix member. The attacks were not frequent enough to count as initiative blocks. eChina also attempted to attack eRussia’s occupied region of Pyongyan, which also was unsuccessful; however, a RW succeeded in Pyongyan on Day 782, which will allow eNorth Korea to have Congressional elections on the 25th of this month. Considering that the RW was started by and featured the Phoenix commander for the resistance, I am going on a limb to say that Phoenix wants eNK to reappear on the map and become a friendly nation once more.

The Rest of Asia
China and India Start a Training War
Astra Kat G strayed into the world of military and foreign affairs reporting, and offered a great article on the recent goings-on in India on Day 785. eIndia and eChina have agreed to start a training war between them, as eIndia attacks eChinese-controlled Bihar. Unlike in China, the eUS and eChina do not intend to be returning regions to eIndia, as eIndia’s President Ashwamedh is struggling with fighting off a MAFIA political takeover (PTO) effort (recall last week’s TWTW for details), and the fewer eIndian-held regions will mean that eIndia has fewer Congress seats for the MAFIA to challenge. According to Astra’s article, we may see eChina move into eUSA-controlled Jharkhand in the near future, in order to help the country develop its economy and to ease competition within the eUSA’s wood industry.

Serbia’s Land Bridge Weakens
In a combination of Phoenix and EDEN-sponsored RW’s, eSerbia’s land bridge has been reduced to three isolated regions as eSerbia has not advanced beyond its point of farthest advance since Day 776. Some of the RWs, mentioned in a previous article, were initiated by Phoenix to return valuable regions to Phoenix allies, while others were started by EDEN members, probably to disrupt and distract Phoenix fighters. At this point, it is unknown when or if eSerbia may advance from Balochistan; for as long as eSerbia keeps Balochistan, they will be able to either move on China or India and the eUSA-controlled Karnataka region.

Asia Minor

eGreece= blue, eTurkey= red, eIsrael= grey

Greece Conquers Turkish-controlled Israel
eGreece fought a spirited campaign which has resulted in the liberation of four of eIsrael’s five regions from eTurkey. As seen in the map above, eGreece has made itself into a geographic buffer zone separating eTurkey and eIsrael’s remaining region, giving the eIsraelis breathing room and denying eTurkey an easy chance at victories. eGreece then turned to eTurkey’s mainland, where it became apparent that Phoenix will not let EDEN win and risk advancing into the heart of Asia. As a result, eGreece’s advances were halted and its initiative was lost on Day 785, and eTurkey has since been fighting battles in eGreek-held regions of eIsrael.

Europe
Eastern Europe
Romania Conquers Bulgaria, Topples Sofia
Shortly before publication of last week’s TWTW, eRomania succeeded in toppling Sofia, eBulgaria’s last remaining region and its fortress on Day 781. A few hours after the battle closed, eBulgaria was able to return to the map by winning a resistance war in Plodiv, ostensibly to rebuild the country. Plodiv was conquered on Day 782, but eBulgaria has returned to the map with additional resistance wars freeing Varna and Vidin.

Eastern Europe, as of Day 787

Foreign Intervention in Pakistani Europe
Elite members of eRomania’s military initiated an RW shortly after server reset on Day 786, targeting ePakistan’s controlled region of Burgas. Members of Seal Team 6 (ST6) also took part and with the EDEN victory in Burgas, have (for now) completely walled off eSerbia from the rest of Asia and their land bridge, as eRomania blocks the northern borders and meets with eGreece in the south. Were eRomania to declare war against ePakistan, they could conceivably attempt to remove ePakistan from Europe and chase eSerbia from Anatolia. Although this may make sense for eRomania, they are routinely facing RWs and occasional attacks from eSerbia, and may instead opt to support EDEN endeavors elsewhere in the week ahead.

Hungary and Serbia Return Slovenia to the Map
Day 784 featured a strong Phoenix push to return eSlovenia to the map, as eHungary attacked eCroatian Prekmurje and Phoenix forces started RWs in the remaining regions. Coupled with eSerbian elite support and possibly eBosnian aid, 4 of eSlovenia’s 6 regions were taken back, with eCroatia still holding the Slovenian Littoral and Styria-Carinthia. No additional action has been taken to attempt to return the remaining two regions, but the lack of any border between eHungary and a Slovenian region controlled by eCroatia means that only RWs would be able to turn Slovenian Littoral and Syria-Carinthia to the eSlovenians. The return of eSlovenia to the map will be valuable for Phoenix, as eSlovenia would be able to launch blocking attacks on the eCroats in order to keep eCroatia blocked and limited in its ability to deploy its military elsewhere.

Central Europe
Last Minute EDEN Tanking Removes Germany from the Map
On the same day as eBulgaria’s fall, EDEN forces conquered the eGerman Q5 hospital region of Saarland, toppling a second minor Phoenix partner. On Day 784, when eHungary launched their offensive on eCroatia, four RWs began in eGermany in:
- Mecklenburg-WesternPomerania,
- Saxony-Anhalt,
- Thuringia, and
- Saxony,
probably under the hope that ePoland would be distracted by eHungary; however, these attacks and all subsequent RW attempts have been unsuccessful at returning eGermany to the map, and eGermany has not attempted a new RW in the past couple of days. The recent lull in combat activity is both likely caused by and responsible for eGermany’s lack of success. Nonetheless, the recent attack by EDEN on the eUK may force ePoland to loosen its grip on the occupied regions, and we could see eGermany take advantage of this chance to return to the map.

eSpain and ePoland faced no shortage of uprisings this week

Spain and Poland Region Swap, Confronted with Resistance Wars
ePoland and eSpain have been mired in a counterinsurgency campaign, as resistance wars have flared up across occupied France and Germany. The region swapping performed by the EDEN occupiers have allowed ePoland and eSpain to share the responsibility for containing RWs, consequently giving themselves greater success and proving more effective at quelling the resistance movements. Both countries have been able to stifle the resistance, but RWs will continue to siphon some of eSpain’s and ePoland’s capacity to fight on other fronts.

Western Europe
United Kingdom Attacks Northern France, Blocks Spanish
eSpain removed the eUK from the European mainland late this week, but the eUK had been taking advantage of its ability to alternate between Upper Normandy and Lower Normandy, assuring that the eUK has held eSpain in initiative lock and unable to pursue any offensive against the eUK or the eNetherlands. Should the initiative lock be broken, it will be interesting to see how eSpain responds: whether they chose to attack the remaining eFrench regions, join ePoland in fighting the eUK (read below), or move on the Low Countries….

RL history is reversed as military forces are now crossing the English Channel to the eUK, and not from it

The United Kingdom Comes Under Attack
Finally, the main event of Day 787-- and probably also the week-- just in time to be covered in The Week That Was, was ePoland’s region swap with eSpain to take control of Upper Normandy and from there, began an assault on the eUK, attacking the South East of England region. Now is the chance for Phoenix and EDEN both to “put up or shut up,” as the weeks of propaganda have finally succumbed to actual combat. On the surface, this attack on the eUK mainland spells doom for the island nation, as their current battle with eSpain will run out and they will be unable to continue blocking the eSpanish. In the coming days, we may very well see the eUSA, eSweden, and eNorway all jump in and attack, although the eUK will enjoy its collection of MPPs, which will allow Phoenix members to fight for the eUK from home.
Without substantial Phoenix backing, the eUK may be wiped off the map, but the Battle for the South East of England was an impressive victory for Phoenix and a source of pride for the eUK, as they have repelled the first attack on their soil.

The Week That Was
Without as much major activity to cover, this past week does not seem to have been as exciting, and it seems to have been a recovery week after a very intense Week 4. EDEN succeeded in removing several blocker states, but is now realizing the high costs of occupation. Although the RWs have died down, they had been effective for much of the week in stifling EDEN’s advance. There is no reason to expect the next week to remain as quiet, as Phoenix may attempt to raise the stakes in Europe and force the EDEN members to fight harder to hold their conquests. The recent explosion of battle in the eUK will assure that next week’s edition has much to cover from the get-go.

God Bless America,
