The Week That Was, Week 10 Edition

Day 822, 16:48 Published in USA USA by Lieutenant Scheisskopf

We are now solidly in the third month of this war, and with 10 weeks in the history books, The Week That Was (TWTW) returns once more to recap the developments of the past 7 days. Peace has closed one theater while declarations of war assure that others are just getting underway. Let’s get started.

Asia
China

A bridge by ePakistan, eRussia, and eHungary enabled eSerbia (blue-grey) to approach
iron-rich Liaoning (bright green, bottom) on Day 817 and conquer it the next day

Serbia Inherits Liaoning, Completes Asian Campaign
At the beginning of the week, eSerbia finished a journey which lasted 47 days as it successfully completed a complex region swapping campaign across asia and to the iron-rich Liaoning region of China. Behind eRussia’s conquests of Liaoning and Xinjiang last week and reenergized by ePakistan’s newly opened wars with eRussia, the ePakistanis and eHungarians finished the land bridge which allowed eSerbia to swap into Liaoning without provoking a direct battle with the eChinese. In so doing, the powerful Phoenix ally now has an iron region commensurate with its military power, and will be able to fuel its military machine while improving its economy. By installing a Q5 hospital and defense system in Liaoning, eSerbia clearly intends to hold the region for as long as possible.

EDEN Launches Resistance Wars as USA Attacks London
Day 817 also included the eUSA’s assault on London, which was accompanied by a series of EDEN-backed resistance wars (RW) across Phoenix-occupied regions, including Chagang, Hamyong, and Jillin to throw off eRussia as the eUS attacked London. Accompanying those attacks were additional RWs in eSerbian-occupied Balochistan, Xinjiang, and North West Frontier Province (NWFP). These attacks were not seriously contested, but an increasingly popular tactic by both sides, the RWs proved moderately effective in drawing away Phoenix fire from other battles and forcing the defender to spread their forces to cover all threats.

With three Phoenix powers occupying northern regions, and a Sol ally holding others,
eChina has its work cut out for it as it moves to regain its natural territory

China Fights to Become Whole
During the course of the past two weeks, eChina has lost nearly 1/3 of its former regions, between region swapping amongst Phoenix powers and a Sol ally looking to help the eChinese. Last week’s offensive by eRussia brought in the ePhilippines to attempt to block eRussia’s advance, and failing that, the ePhilippines have gradually relinquished its holdings to the eChinese. Of course, eChina’s greater obstacle are the three Phoenix members who have carved up China, as eHungary controls the famous Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia, while eSerbia has settled into Liaoning and eRussia holds Jillin as a strategic buffer for both iron havens its Phoenix allies control. The eChinese attempted a double whammy strike on eHungary on Day 821 as it started simultaneous attacks on Inner Mongolia with a straight-on attack and a resistance war targeting the region, and also initiated conflict with eSerbia by declaring war on Day 822 against the remaining Phoenix occupier. In all likelihood, eChina will need EDEN and Sol backing to oust any of the Phoenix powers, while eRussia’s location will serve as a constant counterpoint to any eChinese progress.

Attention may turn to Southeast Asia as Indonesia (purple) makes noise, attacking South Thailand (royal
blue), which is in range of eUS-controlled Karnataka (light blue), and declares war on the ePhilippines (red)

Indonesia Declares War on Philippines, Attacks Thailand
Late in the week, eIndonesia broke the silence in Southeast Asia by attacking Southern Thailand and compounding this move with a declaration of war against the ePhilippines, who irked the Phoenix member by the Sol ally’s anti-Phoenix actions in China while trying to defend the eChinese from further Phoenix maneuvering. eIndonesia attacked the eThais four weeks ago, but that was to gain an active war with eArgentina and facilitate their unsuccessful journey into South America. It is unclear what their objectives are from this battle as they have not retreated from it and have pushed the Southern Thailand wall into the underground, but Thailand is a stepping stone to India. Such a move could suggest that eUS-held Karnataka may be the end goal for the eIndonesians, as they look to regain the iron region they lost over two months ago.

Asia Minor
Greece Continues Offensive Against Turkey
Part of a very volatile Day 817, eGreece attempted to push deeper into eTurkey by attacking the Mediterranean Coast of Turkey, eTurkey’s last Q5 hospital region. Phoenix successfully defended the battle and kept eTurkey militarily viable, although eGreece has maintained control of the battle and attacked the Black Sea Coast of Turkey on Day 821. Because of a reduction of battles elsewhere, Phoenix rallied to eTurkey’s defense and raised a wall which will likely stand by the battle’s close.

Turkish President Impeached
Part of a backdrop to the battles in Asia Minor, eTurkish Congressmen overwhelmingly voted on the impeachment of their president, coming on the heels of another impeachment earlier in the year and following eGreece’s successes on the battlefield. It appears that eTurkey has a stable succession plan lined up for its incoming administration, but it remains to be seen whether the country will be able to put up a unified front against the EDEN power attacking them.

Europe

Europe as we know it on Day 822

Great Britain
EDEN Attacks London, Phoenix Defends
The moment much of the eUSA had waited for finally came on Day 817, as eUS President Josh Frost met the urges of the masses and pressed the button to attack London. Against a slew of activated mutual protection pacts (MPPs), the eUS attack fell short and was aborted as Phoenix raised a gratuitously insurmountable wall in London’s defense. As the eUK was reduced to London at the time, its defense was critical for the Phoenix state, and its allies made sure the outcome on Day 818 would not be in question.

United Kingdom Reduced to One Region
As London was under fire, eUK Prime Minister Dishmcds retreated from the West Midlands and East of England, allowing Phoenix to consolidate its firepower and preventing any other EDEN ally from gaining a border with London. In response, the eUS began RWs on these regions to allow eNorway access to East of England in the hopes of bordering London, and fought for the resistance while eSpain successfully region swapped into South East of England and bordered London from the south; however, these maneuvers were made irrelevant by a subsequent maneuver which caught much of the New World by surprise.

The eUK was in dire straits before peace was signed (left), but is now
gradually regaining its regions as result of their peace with EDEN (right)

Peace Reached Between UK and EDEN
The Battle of Britain came to a peaceful close on Day 820, as peace was reached with terms favorable to both sides. In return for its regions, the eUK agreed to close its wars with all six of the attacking EDEN powers, which deactivates the MPPs aligned against them-- a powerful assortment of enemies which could have otherwise wrought havoc on EDEN in the months ahead. The eUS and its EDEN allies can now spend gold on more strategically important endeavors (countering Phoenix’s gains in Asia has been mentioned in eUS media), while Phoenix no longer needs worry about their ally’s defense from an amount of fronts which would make any nation crumble. For good reason, eUS leaders such as eUS President Josh Frost and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff NXNW have praised the triumph of diplomacy alongside their eUK counterparts Dishmcds and GLaDOS, although their actions have not been unanimously approved-- eUK Defense Minister Polio resigned in protest while an impeachment vote began on Dishmcds, and President Frost faced some backlash as well.

These leaders were elected and entrusted to high positions by the people so they would make the tough decisions that ordinary citizens do not want to make. It is easy to clamor for war as an average citizen, but if a country faces annihilation, is in danger of losing too much of its funds on a less relevant fight, or needs to focus elsewhere, the irresponsible decision would have been to continue in an essentially deadlocked fight. Military tacticians and leaders worldwide questioned the decision to invade the eUK when its eRepublik significance is minimal and it had such substantial allied backing, and a peaceful resolution to the conflict is in the best interests of both sides-- a rarity in a game which is ordinarily zero-sum by nature. It is unclear, however, whether the eIrish will relinquish Northern Ireland, a region they strongly desired, since they are not cosignatories to the peace agreement.

Central Europe has factored more prominently in both sides’
war planning in the past seven days, since eCroatia moved on eAustria

Central and Eastern Europe
Croatia, Hungary Attack Austria
Building off a development taking place late last week, eCroatia continued its offensive on eAustria, but faced eHungarian intervention on eAustria’s defense in the conflict. Initial successes in the campaign were gradually reversed, as eCroatia holds only Salzburg and has faced steady RWs and eHungarian attacks on Upper Austria. By virtue of survival, eAustria has reached out to Phoenix, as eHungary has conquered much of the country to deny it to the eCroats, while the traditional eSlovenian rivals staged diversion campaigns of their own. As a result, eCroatia’s successes in Austria have been limited, and any motive to advance beyond Austria into Germany or France seems less likely against these adversaries.

Poland Declares War on, Attacks Czech Republic
ePoland surprised much of the New World with its declaration of war and subsequent attacks against the eCzech Republic, as it quickly conquered Southern Bohemia, Northern Bohemia, and Moravia shortly after attacking. I and others anticipated the move being an easier route for eCroatia to move past eAustria, but other reporting indicated that the motive was to conclude a peaceful union of eCzech Republic and eSlovakia to form a stronger eCzechoslovakia, which was agreed upon between previous administrations of both sides. However, a political takeover (PTO) in the eCzech government summarily negated the proposal, which was met by the military force seen on the battlefields today. As the eCzech government does not speak Czech and Phoenix is acting strongly in the union’s intervention, the sides of this argument seem to be clearly laid out.

These actions resulted in the recent impeachment of ePoland’s president, as he ostensibly pursued the attack on the eCzech Republic without first consulting his Congress. Whether or not ePolish policy towards the eCzechoslovakian merger will change or not remains unclear.

The goal for eSlovakia is a union of the two former states of Czechoslovakia, but
a new eCzech government and Phoenix do not support the previously accepted merger

Slovakia Swaps With Poland for Czech Regions
In support of a Czechoslovakian union, eSlovakia conquered two of the eCzech Republic’s three regions after swapping with ePoland earlier in the week. As eHungary currently occupies the final Czech region, the union remains incomplete and will require removing Phoenix’s most powerful country in order to secure the union-- only until eHungary were to attack eSlovakia and attempt to undo the union.

Resistance Wars Emerge Across Polish-Occupied Zone
Twice during the course of the week, ePoland was hit by a series of RWs to distract its focus from other objectives. Day 817’s worldwide mayhem was accompanied by three RWs in Thuringia, Polou Chartenes, and Champagne Ardennes. Day 821 brought a more concerted RW force against the ePoles, as Phoenix leaders opened insurgencies in Saxony-Anhalt, Champagne Ardenne, Paris Isle of France, Franche-comte, Alsace, and Lorraine, although none came to a favorable outcome for Phoenix. Coming to the aid of their ally, eSpain region swapped further across Germany, taking Thuringia and Saxony in a bid to reduce ePoland’s regional occupation and to block any eHungarian advance against ePoland from its current hold of Southern Bohemia.

Recap
Although the peace in the eUK is favorable for both sides, eSerbia’s gain of Liaoning gives Phoenix a long-term benefit from this week and has easily tilted the balance of power in Asia further in Phoenix’s favor; with Liaoning, eSerbia could build its military strength at a capacity comparable to its eHungarian allies, which would create further problems for EDEN on other fronts.

Whether or not Southeast Asia and Central Europe come to command the world’s attention will be worth monitoring, as the alternative would be the start of a new front elsewhere. It is no secret that EDEN wants Phoenix out of China while Phoenix wants to see the eUSA depart from Karnataka, but whether there is a resumption of hostilities towards those ends will wait to be seen. Should eGreece seriously jeopardize eTurkey’s existence, then it is a safe bet to assume that the New World will turn there in support of their respective allies.

With the European theater relatively calm (for now), EDEN should strongly consider consolidating its MPPs and minimize the need to declare region swapping wars against each other. These wars leave the respective EDEN members exposed to attacks with limited allied backing, and could make any possible Phoenix undertakings against any EDEN power that much more effective.

I must make one caveat, that if or when the war shows signs of dying down, TWTW will also reduce coverage. This newspaper’s focus is not to create news, but to report it as it takes place, and I will not put the time or effort into documenting a slew of training wars and fiery propaganda without substance if that becomes the course of the New World in the weeks ahead.

God Bless America,

Lt. Scheisskopf
