The country is governed on the basis of a multi-party democratic system and still works to attain the separation between the legislative, executive and judicial power branches. It is a semi-presidential republic where executive functions are held by both government and the president. The latter is elected by popular vote for a maximum of two terms of five years and appoints the prime minister, who in turn appoints the Council of Ministers. The legislative branch of the government, collectively known as the Parliament (residing at the Palace of the Parliament), consists of two chambers (Senate and Chamber of Deputies) whose members are elected every four years by simple plurality.

Romania is divided into 41 counties (județe, pronounced judets) and the municipality of Bucharest. Each county is administered by a county council, responsible for local affairs, as well as a prefect responsible for the administration of national affairs at the county level. The prefect is appointed by the central government but cannot be a member of any political party.

Here are the nine historical regions: Moldova, Muntenia, Transivlania, Dobrogea, Maramures, Bucovina, Banat, Oltenia and Crisana.

The significance of 1st of December

It is celebrated as National Day since 1990. Before that Romania celebrated 10th of May - Independence and King’s Day between 1866 -1947 and 23th of August between 1949 -1990. To better understand the significance of this date I will give you a short history lesson.
The territory of modern day Romania - where Moldavia, Wallachia and Transylvania, the three historical romanian states (voivodships) formed - used to be the intersection of at least three influence zones: Hungarian/Austro-hungarian in the west, polish/russian in the east and ottoman in the south. All three romanian-inhabited states struggled for their independence and at some point in 1600 were united under Mihai Viteazul.

Walking faster in time we reach the 1st stage of re-uniting the romanian regions: 1859 when Alexandru Ioan Cuza was chosen ruler of both Moldavia and Wallachia on 5th and 24th of January; In this way, the first two major regions are united under one banner and one name: Principatele Unite Romane - The United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The young country became independent in 1877 and The Kingdom of Romania subsequently emerged in 1881 with Prince Carol being crowned as King Carol I of Romania.

Time to reach what we all wanted, 1918, 1 december, known for the National Meeting at Alba Iulia where finally the regions of Banat, Maramures, Crisana, Bucovina and Transylvania are united with the Romanian Kingdom and formed Romania.

Since then Romania lost a few regions and reached the shape we all see today.
*Coat of arms

*It is time to change the format as I said in the beginning of the article. Instead of speaking about food, places to visit and other things, separated I will take every Historic region of Romania and present its beauties. Hope you will enjoy.
Moldova

*You can use the following map for all the regions from now on. No point in me posting it more times.

Let’s start the journey in Moldova presented by me (I am as moldavian as it gets). Having a new format for this article it was hard to know with what to start but what better way than finding out about the legend of the name, Moldova.

Legend

It is the legend of Dragos Voda, the one that founded the country named Moldova. He was originally from Maramures and came in Moldova in the 13th century. Until then it was a poor region, robbed by tatars and with no strong organization.

It is said that while on the road to Moldova, Dragos Voda encountered a big aurochs. Dragos Voda hit him with an arrow and the aurochs ran away towards the forest and the only one that kept close was the dog named Molda. She hunted the animal and helped with the hunt until they reached a big river. There the aurochs was finally caught and brought down but Molda was caught by the furious river and drowned. After helping the people get rid of the tatars and becoming leader, Dragos Voda chose to name the region Moldova after his lost dog, Molda.

Important figures

Let’s keep it up with history and present you a couple of famous people from Moldova.

Stefan cel Mare (1433-1504) - Important leader, rulled Moldova 47 years.

Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889) - Considered the biggest poet of our nation and one of the 4 big romanian writers, also called the 4 big classics.

Ion Creanga (1837-1889 - Also one of the 4 big classics, his fairytales and his memories from childhood told in a fantastic manner made him unique. He was a great friend of Mihai Eminescu.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza (1820-1873 - leader that united Moldavia with Wallachia and famous for his sense of justice.

Nadia Comaneci (born in 1961) - famous gymnast and 1st ever to have a perfect score of 10 at the Olympics in Montreal.

George Enescu (1881-1955) - considered the most important romanian musician; This is my favorite composition.

Visiting

Hope you enjoyed the legend and our beautiful traditional costume because it is time to visit the region. There are many hills and mountains so the beauty of the nature can be admired if you have time. I will start with the capital of the region, Iasi (if you ever find yourself in this lovely city don’t hesitate to give me a message, I will be ready to give you a tour of the city and drink a beer.

I would start with the Palace of Culture.

From there, feel free to explore the center of the city and go further, through the main parc surrounding the botanical garden.

Being an old city full of history it’s a nice experience and let me tell you that the food is just awesome, you can find a lot of restaurants to try different types of food, depending on what you like. If you want more details, just PM me.

Now let’s move further to a place I personaly enjoy, TO THE MOUNTAINS !!

Ceahlau mountains, Toaca peak at 1904 m. I was on this mountain on different routes and it still keeps me fascinated. You can start the climbing from Durau or from Izvorul Muntelui, both are beautiful. I will post you a few photos from my journeys.

*This is were you start.

*Just me near the edge of the cliff.

*Seeing in the distance our goal for the day.

*Next morning meeting a new friend.

*And let’s not forget the view from the peak.

Hope you enjoyed it cause after I saw the pics I am ready to go climb the mountain again.

Now that you saw a glimpse of our mountains, let’s go to the city of Galati and see the Danube river.

So we had mountains, a city full of history, a river... what next? Maybe some wine.

The Vrancea county is famous for this, especially near the city of Panciu (don’t get me wrong, almost all the region of Moldova is famous for wine but Vrancea is at the top).

And if you are still in that zone... visit Mausoleul de la Marasesti (Mausoleum of Mărășești), dedicated to the heroes of WW1 that kept the lines and ensured the survival of the romanian people.

To finish the visit, I will tell you that there are 4 more cities I didn’t speak about so far: Bacau, Piatra Neamt, Botosani and Vaslui. (My home town)

Bacau and Piatra Neamt are in a region with mountains so explore them, beautiful cities. Vaslui, my home town, small but clean and beautiful... a picture should be worth more than 1000 words.

Let’s wrap up our visiting schedule... time to eat !

Bucovina

This region will be presented with the help of titziano that advises you to listen to this soundtrack while reading. You can also see a few articles about Bucovina on titziano’s newsapepr

We will start by learning how Suceava, the main city of Bucovina, was founded.

Legend

The formation of Suceava.

I will start by saying that the region was full of shepherds and flocks of sheep. Being a region with a lot of pastures and rivers it was perfect for them. The legend says that one year the dryness of the land caused the shepherds to retreat from the lowland towards the forest.

They gathered near the forest and didn’t know if they should enter or not so one of the old shepherds said that 5 younger and courageous ones should go and see if the forest offers all they needed.

One of them had the luck to stumble upon a glade with tall and green grass and heard the noise of water. When he investigated it , he discovered a huge river .. the river Suceava. He inspected it and tried to pass it towards another glade, at this point he meets the other 4 shepherds that started the same path. They start telling about a hermit they discovered on a hill not far away.

They went back to the other shepherds and told what they discovered and so all of them started following the same road and build houses near the one of the hermit. Time passed , tatars came and burned the houses but there is a saying: “The water passes but the stones remain” so Suceava built up again ,stronger and bigger.

*If you want more about this legend ask Titziano , he is eager to help you. There are also many other interesting legends but maybe someone will mention about them in the comment section.

Important figures

Visiting

Time to move from Moldova and visit the majestic land of Bucovina. For starters I will say that it is also called the “The land of the monasteries”. What can I say about Bucovina is that the nature calls you and you had better answer that call. Before visiting the sacred land let’s start with the city of Suceava and what better place to start than the Citadel where the leaders of Moldova lived.

And for a better knowledge of the old days, the Museum of the Bucovina Village is the perfect spot.

You can also visit the rest of the city because you will surely discover many interesting things. Time to start traveling... and, why not, go towards the mountains , on TransRarau.

The view is amazing but that is not all, let’s go towards Pietrele Doamnei.

Rodnei Mountains are also close by and you can climb on different paths, I will give you a little glimpse of what you can find.

Before we reach the monasteries I will present you one more miracle called Cacica salt mine.

Or why not, travel with Mocanita between Hutulca and Moldovita.

Now time to start visiting the holy land.. all of them are beautiful but would require a special article with them so I will put you my top 3 here.

*Voronet Monastery famous for it’s blue colour named Voronet Blue

*Moldovita Monsatery

*Putna Monastery

There are many others you can discover. Let’s take a break at the moment because we traveled a lot. If you like skiing, having a nice walk in a park or spa this is the place to be: Gura Humorului, Vatra Dornei, Campulung Moldovenesc are perfect for this.

Now let’s move on to the next step.

Food

Balmos Bucovinean

Cheese and mamaliga as its best.

Ciorba Radauteana

A really good soup with chicken and sour cream and of course, lots of vegetables.

Tochitura bucovinean

Tocinei

This is my favorite pastry from Bucovina.

*There are many interesting stuff about Bucovina such as traditions or festivals but would make the article too long so you can discover them outside the article.

Dobrogea

I had to handle this one on my own so I hope I will have all my facts right.

Dobrogea is the most distinct region of Romania, known for its multiculturalism, lovely weather and many tourism hotspots.

The Legend of Siutghiol Lake and Ovidiu Island

Long ago, after walking an entire summer day through Dobrogea, God and Saint Peter stopped at a village ( close to modern day Mamaia) to seek shelter and food. The villagers were mean and unwelcoming to foreigners, so the two kept searching until they found an old hut on the outskirts. Here lived an old widow, who could barely work and whose only animal was a barren cow. The only person who cared for this woman was the Roman poet Ovidiu ( who was exiled near the Black Sea during the reign of Emperor Augustus).

Despite her condition, the widow tried to accommodate her two divine guests to the best of her ability. Seeing her efforts, God appreciated her behaviour and enchanted the cow to produce milk. Having ensured they have something to drink, God ordered the widow to make bread from the ashes in the oven. To her surprise, the host pulls out a beautiful and self-regenerating loaf of bread from the oven.

The following day, the widow wakes up to find her two divine guests gone. She goes outside and sees a large freshwater lake with white water in the place where the village used to be. Only her house remains, on a small island. At the same time, Ovidiu comes out of the house (where he slept the night in a guest room) and is petrified by the marvelous sight.

Thus, the island is called after the poet, Island Ovidiu, and the lake, Siutghiol, comes from Turkish, where it means “milky lake/lake of milk”, owing to the white color of the water.

Visiting

Dobrogea is a major hub of Romanian tourism. The two major destinations here are:

The Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, and the best preserved on the continent. Originally part of the Black Sea, the Danube Delta is a good place to observe nature. It is home to many unique species of plants and animals in Europe, as well as contains 23 different ecosystems, including some of the world’s largest wetlands. Previous visitors rave about the spectacular sunsets and highly recommend taking a slow boat ride on the river. Together with the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex situated next to it, they comprise one of Romania’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Romanian Seaside

The most exploited tourism zone in Romania, the seaside hosts many resorts, such as the ever-popular Mamaia, Costinesti, Vama Veche, and what I like to call the “roman pantheon complex”, with resorts such as Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Neptune among others.

If you like sunny beaches or crazy parties (or both!), the Romanian seaside is the perfect place for you.

!Some additional places of interest in Dobrogea include:

The ancient ruins of Histria

Constanța

The largest city of the region, and one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded by Greek settlers as Tomis sometime between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. Main attractions include the Casino and the Delphinarium.

Traditional food

Fish zacusca

Dobrogean moussaka

Carp saramura

To get to Muntenia you will find in Cernavoda the most beautiful bridge in Romania: Anghel Saligny Bridge. When it was completed, in 1890 it became the longest bridge in Europe and the third longest in the world.

Muntenia

Time to visit another important region of the country, Muntenia, presented with the help of my favorite clone, Alina V. If you don’t understand why she is my clone just pay attention to this: AlinaVampireAlinaVampireAlinaVampireA… you get it. Let’s start.

Legend

The legend of Bucuresti

Yes, the capital city has a legend about its founding. Stories tell there once was a shepherd named Bucur. It is said that his daughter named Anca was kidnaped by tatars. Bucur took two more mighty shepherds and started chasing the kidnappers day and night. It was winter time and the rivers were frozen when they reached the Nistru river and found all the tatars drowned and his daughter Anca the only survivor.
At that moment, he decided to go far away, towards safer lands, on the other side of the Danube river but he stopped on the bank of Dambovita river where he established his home. Years later, Anca got married and a church was built. Around his house and the church people started building more houses and it grew into a huge city named Bucuresti.

Important figures:

Mircea Eliade (1907-1986) - romanian historic writer;

Ion Luca Caragiale (1852-1912) - one the 4 big clasic writers of Romania, well known for his theatre plays full of satire;

Henri Coanda (1886-1972) - aviation pioneer;

Visiting

Many places to visit, but Bucharest is a good place to start. It is the largest city in Romania, around 1.8 million people and lots of interesting places to see. Coming from the airport, in the Nord of Bucharest, you will encounter the fountain Miorita.

Continuing towards the Herastrau Park, we can visit The Village Museum and see Elisabeta Palace.

Don’t miss The National Museum of Natural History “Grigore Antipa” or The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant; on the way, take a look at the Arch of Triumph.

The well known Victoria Palace - a lot of protests take place there nowadays so you can meet a lot of new people.

I apologize to Alina V but I will put here only 1 more thing to see... you can ask for the rest in the comments if you like. I am presenting you the 2nd largest office building in the world, Parlament Palace.

Let’s move to the next city, Ploiesti. Interesting things to see would be the memorial house of Ion Luca Caragiale, the Clock Museum “Nicolae Simache”and the Petroleum Museum.

Interesting fact is that Ploiesti had the 1st refinery in the world in 1857 and that made Bucuresti the 1st public gas illuminated city. It also was an important strategic target for the Allies in WW2.

Moving on towards Sinaia you can’t miss the Peles Castle and Pelisor Castle.

If you take the road to Cheia, must also see the salt mine at Slanic Prahova

Plenty of interesting places, but I will end this with the beautiful nature in the Bucegi Mountains - the Sfinx, Babele, Urlatoarea Waterfall and the Heroes Monument on top of Caraiman Peak.

In Targoviste, former capital of Muntenia we can find the ruins of the court.

In Curtea de Arges - another former capital city - we find the beautiful church Neagoe Basarab built between 1512 - 1517.

Legend says that Manole, the constructor hired by Neagoe, could not finish the monastery because the walls built each day were collapsing during the night. In a dream, Manole will get the solution: sacrificing the first woman who will bring food the next day, by building her into the walls. He will have to enclose his own wife and unborn child and hear her plea to be freed, as the walls grew higher. They were able to continue but, as the monastery grew tall and more beautiful than anything Neagoe - or anybody else - ever seen, the ruler decided he won’t let Manole live to build another church. He took away the scaffolding, leaving the workers and Manole on the roof. Like Icar, Manole built wings and tried to fly but, of course, he had to pay the ultimate price for his attempt to reach perfection.
They say that in the place he crushed a spring appeared - Manole’s Fountain:

*That sums up a part of Muntenia. Hope this glimpse made you hungry for more and you will ask or find out by yourself. I didn’t found anything special about the food - maybe the plum jam from Topoloveni and the plum tzuica from Valeni - you can find a mix of east and west, numberless traditional and contemporary cuisine restaurants. Also, you can find anything, I really mean anything in Bucuresti.

Transilvania

Another important region and a lot of debate on this one, be ready in the comments for it. This time my little help is visator and if there is any newspaper I would like to promote, it is her newspaper, trust me that you will find a lot of interesting things from Romania in it.

Legend

The legend of Dracula

Let’s find out how vampires were born (me included). Altough the romanian culture isn’t based on vampirism, we are well known for that thanks to Bram Stoker and its book “Dracula”. The main inspiration of this book was Vlad Tepes, a well known leader of Muntenia, with a thin line between the real facts and the legends.

It is said that his name comes from the Order of the Dragon where Vlad Tepes was affiliated, an organization that fought against the heretics. Also, he comes from the noble family of Draculesti and it was just a step until Dracula.

He truly is an interesting character in history, so feel free to read more about him.

Important figures

Ioan Slavici (1848-1925) - great writer and the last from the 4 great classic that I present in this article

Iuliu Maniu (1873-1953) - important politic man , many times prime-minister of Romania

Avram Iancu (1824-1872) - important face in the 1848 revolution

Zacusca

I think that should be enough about this region... it just a small part of it but you can find out more if you just ask.

Oltenia

Believe me or not, it is the only region of Romania I haven’t visited so far but with the help of … wait for it… no one could have guessed… Diuras, I will describe it to you.

Legend

People around here really know how to love so let’s talk a little about the legend of Dragobete. Dragobete is celebrated on 24 february and is the romanian traditional celebration of love.
It is about Dragomir, the god of love. It was tought that he made oficial from the skyes the marriage between animals and later it symbolized the revival of nature and coming of the spring.

It is said that everyone that joined the celebration on the Dragobete day would be happy, healthy all year long. Also the drops of dew water on the wild strawberries were used by unmarried females to make them more attractive.

And of course the beauty of the mountains.

Next is Baile Herculane with a history of over 2000 years.

To finish this trip, we reach Timisoara with it’s beautifull arhitecture. Important city in the romanian history. Here is place where the revolution from 1989 started with the quote: “Today in Timisoara, tomorrow in the rest of the country”.

*The Revolution Square

Also another interesting fact about this city, it was the 1st one in Europe with electrical illumination in 1884.

*Hope you enjoyed our small tour, so let’s move forward.

Crisana

Traditional costume

Visiting

Starting the visit with the most otustanding cave I saw in Romania, Bears Cave.

Next is a gorgeous citadel from the 13th century, the Soimos citadel.

Karolyi Castle

I will end this short visit with something left by the romans, the Porolissum Castrum.

I know the last two regions where shorter but I am sure you saw something interesting, so let’s move towards the last one.

Maramures

Last but not least I present you the region of Maramures with the guide of your favorite erepublik streamer, Clopoyaur. I think that listening to Clopoyaur speaking about Maramures in romanian language is so awesome. What I can say about this region is that it is the place where traditions are best kept, so if you want to feel romanian traditions at their full, Maramures is the place.

Trust me when I say this people are really funny and it is a real pleasure to drink horinca with them. If you don’t know how, this is a good tutorial.

It is said that their music reminds you about the scottish bagpipe but you haven’t seen any scotsman drinking horinca or eating “slanina” with onions.

Traditional costume

Visiting

Yea, it is time for one last ride. You must know that the most important things in Maramures are the beauty of the nature, the hospitality of the people and the simplicity in all the things.
Baia mare is the name of the capital, a place where the old combine with the new in a beautiful fashion.

Don’t forget to visit the Museum of Minerals, the only one in Romania.

And another interesting site is an old tour used in the mettalurgy industry, today standing at 351m and ready to be visited.

If you like nature go towards Gutai Mountain.

In this area you can also find some beautiful atractions such as:

*The Blue lake

*Barsana Monastery

*Maramures is famous for its gates, a lot of models, look them up.

*The happy cemetery from Sapanta, because they know how to treat life and death.

Also, there are cities like Borsa, special thanks to its people and sites. For me Borsa also means ski resort and the Horses Waterfall.

Yea, I know… not you again... just wanted to show you the waterfall at 6 months difference.

You can find here really rich villages such as Negresti Oas and Huta Certeze.

*Just the cars you often can find there

The food is also very delicious but nothing new from what you have seen so far.. I think.

*With this I end my presentation , hope you enjoyed it.
