The significance of the 1st of October

It marks independence from British rule on 1 October 1960. Many aspects of modern life in Nigeria were established under the period of British Rule, but by the middle of the 20th century, the call for independence sweeping across Africa and the decline of the territories in the British Empire led to Nigeria being granted independence on 1 October 1960 under a constitution with a parliamentary government and a degree of autonomy for the country's three regions.

Nigeria marked total independence from Britain when it became a federal republic when a new constitution was adopted on 1 October 1963 with Nnamdi Azikiwe as its first president.

*Coat of arms

I have to admite that it was hard to find something at this category, they have a lot of mythology, legends and interesting things but not many sources or at least no one to tell me where I should find them so I will try to tell you a little about the base of this legends and myths…
The Yoruba religion

The Yoruba religion comprises the traditional religious concepts and practices of the Yoruba people, natives of southwestern Nigeria and parts of Togo and Benin. The religion is linked with many other ancestral Afro-American religious beliefs, such as Haitian Voodoo, Santeria or Hoodoo.

The most common belief of Yoruba is that all humans possess an “Ayanmo” (destiny/fate), and are expected to eventually become one in spirit with the divine creator, Olodumare(all-encompassing, usually refered to as “it”, rather than “he” or “she”).The spirituality of the religion concerns themes of self-exploration, learning one’s fate and interacting with the spirits of nature and of one’s ancestors, as well as with the Orishas, messenger spirits of the divine creator. These Orishas come in many forms, some of them having always been present, while others being humans ascended to divinity.

Bad spirits are called “Ajogun”, and are typically held responsible for bad things such as accidents or diseases. There is also an equivalent of what we know as Chi/Ki in Chinese religions, known here as Ashe, which is described as a force for change. Olodumare is seen as supreme because it is believed that it has Ashe over all living things.

Unlike Buddhism, reincarnation is seen positively in Yoruba, which is more focused on living a good life here and now, rather than concentrating on salvation. The Yoruba equivalent of heaven and hell are not clearly defined, though they are believed to originate from the same source, instead of pertaining to a god or a devil, respectively.
