27 august and its semnification

On 27 august 1991 , Republic of Moldova declars her independency from the Soviet Union , after the failed 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt. Romania is the 1st state to recognize the independency after only a couple of hours.

The legend of the “Martisor”

“Martisorul” is a symbol of the nature’s rebirth. In romanian and moldavian tradition, the women and girls recive “martisoare” and wear them during the month of march as a sign of the spring’s arival. Together with the “martisor”, early spring flowers are also offered, the most representative being the snowdrop.

And now for the myth: in Republic of Moldova it is said that in the 1st day of march, the beautiful Spring came out on the edge of the forest and noticed how, in a clearing, in a bush, a snowdrop sprang from the snow. She decided to help him and began to take off the snow and break the thorny branches.

The Winter, seeing this, became angry and called for the wind and the frost to destroy the flower. The snowdrop froze immediately. The spring then covered the snowdrop with her hands, but she was cut by the thistles. A drop of hot blood dropped from her finger, which, falling over the flower, made her revive.

In this way, Spring defeated Winter, and the colors of the “martisor” symbolize its red blood on the white snow. Currently, the “martisor” is worn throughout March, after which it is caught by the branches of a fruit tree. It is believed that it will bring plenty to people's homes.

It is said that if anyone makes a wish while hanging the “martisor” on the tree branch, it will be fulfilled at once. In the Republic of Moldova, every year, the "Mărţişor" Musical Festival takes place, starting on March 1 and lasting until March 10.
