Through the Barricades; Or, How we got to Where we are Now.

Day 656, 09:11 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Mr Woldy

In this article I shall examine the reasons why the UK came to be a member of PEACE, and what benefits we have seen from this. Not only that, but a brief look at our involvement in the PEACE Invasion of North America.

The Collapse of a Super Alliance

Super in name, not by nature. Atlantis broke apart due to continuing friction between member nations. It has been said, that Atlantis was just a name, people may have helped their allies in times of need, but as for cohesion and friendship, it ended there. No wonder then, that there seemed to be little respect and compassion between certain member nations. On top of the friction that was present, it was topped by the Swedish invasion of Germany.

Germany wasn’t yet a full member of Atlantis, and was waiting for a vote between member nations to see if they would be allowed to enter as full members. However, Sweden held a Grudge, and before the vote could take place, they began invading German owned regions, and declared that they would prefer it if other countries stayed out. In order not to escalate the aggression between countries who were supposedly in the same alliance, countries such as the UK and USA remained neutral, but the UK did have an activated MPP with Germany, and many of its citizens fought for them, to no avail.

With the rapid break down of relations, and the sudden realisation that, if Sweden could get away with attacking fellow Atlantis members, then surely anyone could... At the time, I felt as though getting help from Atlantis allies would be difficult, and there was always chance of another civil war breaking out. Soon after the Sweden-Germany conflict, the collapse of Atlantis was announced. The UK, was alone.

More on the Sweden Germany conflict, here.

The Hungary Training War

Not all was lost for our German friends, after asking for help from PEACE, Hungary had began to liberate occupied German regions, a gesture which was appreciated by Germans as well as many Brits who sympathised with the situation they were in. However, as Hungary carved a path through Europe, they soon found themselves bordered to Scotland, which at the time opened new concerns, as well as possibilities for Anglo-Hungary relations.

The UK approached Hungary about the possibility of a training war, whereby Hungary would occupy Scotland and battles would be initiated from there, after an agreed amount of time, Scotland would be returned. The reasoning behind this was that if Hungary at the time were planning to attack a Canadian region, and needed Scotland to do so, then they may have decided to simply take it.

Furthermore, contrary to what some may think, relations between our two countries had been good for quite some time, it seemed appropriate to strengthen these relations, when the UK had suddenly become a neutral country.

During the period of time that Scotland was occupied, the UK Government went through great lengths to move people out of Scotland, and into UK regions, to help reduce the costs of the battles. Needless to say many people benefited from the TW, but many people across the Pond began to see it as a great threat. So many warnings and a huge amount of propaganda began to swamp the UK’s media, and accusations were created from Paranoia. Canada was invaded, however, it was through French regions.

Propaganda and Alienation

As mentioned, the UK’s media was swamped by Articles from North America, and at times, you may still see an anti-UK government article in the press. Fortunately, many people, including myself released anti-Propaganda articles, to help ensure the citizens of the UK had a proper understanding of what had happened. Many wild rumours where spread round, claims of TO’s and betrayal were constantly made at the time, a time, when the UK was a neutral country.

Unfortunately many people from across the pond could not hold their tongues, which led to many UK officials and citizens distancing themselves from the prospects of improving US-UK relations, however, a few people still had faith, and talks were still being held between The Governments of the two countries.

The climax of the deteriorating relations between the UK and the USA was when the US started an Embargo against the UK. Fortunately it had a minimal effect on us because although we didn’t trade much with them to begin with, we know how to donate things. It’s easy, you push the donate button. However, the Embargo was a strong a symbol of alienation as you can get. The US announced that “Our trade privileges are something we try to only offer to our allies”. Well then, so be it.

UK Meet PEACE, PEACE, this is UK

Throughout the period of time when the UK was neutral, the House of Commons was holding discussions on which Alliance it should join. Initially, neutrality was voted for because we didn’t really know enough about Fortis, or think highly of the weighted voting system. However, throughout the Hungarian TW and the period of Propaganda, many articles that were released from budding journalists across the pond found this hard to accept.

A huge amount of effort was put into improving relations with the US, and into Fortis discussions. The MoFa at the time came under fire, in my opinion wrongly by some members of the UK, and resigned. A new one was appointed and more talks were held with Harrison Richardson, who at the time was dealing with the creation of Fortis. I myself was included in the talks, and after a short while it was announced that weighted voting would be dropped.

However, by this time it was simply too late. The UK had been shown hostility by a few ex Atlantis countries, and had been shown friendship by many PEACE countries, not to mention, all members have an equal say, and people actually seem like friends. Remember to visit the PEACE IRC room once in a while. When Atlantis collapsed, no one would have expected us to join PEACE, however, with Fortis seeming more and more like a non starter, and relations seeing an all time low between the UK and the US, and at the same time good between the UK, Hungary, and Italy, the UK’s House of Commons voted in favour of joining PEACE. Simply put, the reasons for joining hugely outweighed the reasons against.

What was once the talk of commons and cause of huge debate, was quickly becoming a one sided argument.

PEACE Invasion of North America

And here we are. On July the 13th, PEACE launched an Invasion of North America on multiple fronts, which has so far been overall very successful. The UK has had an active role, its mobile forces have inflicted a lot of damage in many important battles around the globe, and it took part in region swaps in France in order to hinder the war efforts of Fortis. Although there were a few resistance wars that were lost, the odds were against us, Fortis/Eden focussing a lot of people and money in order to liberate Canada, and create a small safe-haven for people to take refuge in. Nice. But still, even after paying for the return of several regions, the USA stands at less than 30. It has to be said that Eden has also had heavy involvement, cooperating with Fortis. I suggest they hurry up and merge to create Atlantis Mk 2, before one of them begins to disappear.

A look at the past few months seems to suggest, that the eUK made the right decision.

No said the man in Washington. Your choice belongs to us
No said the man in Bucharest. It belongs to ATLANTIS
No said the man in Stockholm. We took it from the Germans.
Well, we in the United Kingdom, we chose something different.

We chose PEACE
