1st of September


1256: Death of Kujo Yoritsune, 4th shogun of the Mamakura shogunate.
1592: The Battle of Busan - the Battle of Busanpo (Battle of Busan Bay): At the battle of Busan, the outnumbered Korean navy defeats a larger Japanese army.
1864: Birth of Akashi Motojiro, Japanese general, governor-general of Taiwan.
1911: Birth of Komei Abe, Japanese composer.
1923: The Great Kanto earthquake devastates Tokyo and Yokohama, killing about 140,000 people.
1929: Birth of Tomisaburo Wakayama, Japanese actor.
1935: Birth of Seiji Ozawa, Japanese conductor.
1942: More than 100 senior Malaya Communist Party and Malaya People against Japanese Army members gather at the Batu Caves just north of Kuala Lumpur for a secret conference. The Japanese had been tipped off and staged a surprise raid. Most of the MCP and MPAJA high command are destroyed.
1971: Birth of Yoshitaka Hirota, Japanese video game composer and bass guitarist. His most notable works include the soundtracks to the Shadow Hearts series.

2nd of September


1274: Death of Prince Munetaka, the 6th shogun of the Kamakura shogunate of Japan.
1867: Mutsuhito, the Meiji Emperor of Japan, marries Masako Ichijo. The Empress consort is thereafter known as Lady Haruko. Since her death in 1914, she’s called by the posthumous name Empress Shoken.
1914: After the August 23 declaration of war, Japanese troops land in German controlled province of Shandong.
1944: Japanese attack on Southern Chinese province of Guangxi.
1945: Surrender of Japan - The final official surrender of Japan is signed aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. For a short video, click here.
1946: Birth of Joe Yamanaka, Japanese singer.
2013: Death of Makoto Moroi, Japanese composer.

3rd of September


1034: Birth of Go-Sanjo, 71st Japanese emperor.
1938: Birth of Ryoji Noyori, Japanese chemist, Nobel Prize laureate.
1945: Japanese forces in Philippines surrender to Allies.
1973: Birth of Norihiko Hibino, Japanese video game composer and saxophonist. He became known for his work on Konami's Metal Gear Solid and Zone of the Enders video game series.
1982: Birth of Kaori Natori, Japanese singer and model.
1993: Birth of Rina Koike, Japanese actress and idol.

4th of September


1939: Japan declares its neutrality in European World War II.
1945: Japanese forces on Wake Island, which they had held since December of 1941, surrender to U.S. Marines.
1951: Opening of the San Francisco conference for a peace treaty with Japan (up to September 😎.
1962: Birth of Shinya Yamanaka, Japanese physician, Nobel Prize laureate 2012.
1980: Birth of Hitomi Shimatani, Japanese pop singer.
1995: In Okinawa, Japan, the rape of a young teenager by three G.I. launches a new campaign against the presence of US troops in the island.
2000: Visit of Russian president Putin to Japan. He rejects the Japanese claim on the Kurils Islands.
2007: Death of Ryuzo Sejima, was a Japanese army officer and business leader. Then chairman of the board of directors of Asia University.
