1394: Birth of Ashikaga Yoshinori, 6th Japanese shogun.
1441: Death of shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori. He is assassinated.
1905: The British and Japanese renew their alliance (of January 1902) for 10 years and agree to provide mutual support if attacked by other power/
1918: Japanese Imperial Navy battleship Kawachi blows up at Shunan western hongshu, killing at least 621.
1966: Death of Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki - D. T. Suzuki, author of books and essays on Buddhism, Zen and Shin. Also a prolific translator of Chinese, Japanese, and Sanskrit literature.
1991: Death of Hitoshi Igarashi, a Japanese scholar of Arabic and Persian literature and history and the Japanese translator of Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses. He is murdered.
2013: Death of Takako Takahashi (Takako Okamoto), a Japanese author.

1761: Death of Tokugawa Ieshige, the ninth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan.
1915: Birth of Kaoru Ishikawa, Japanese organizational theorist, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at The University of Tokyo, noted for his quality management innovations.
1989: Birth of Sayumi Michishige, Japanese singer.
1998: Japanese prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto resigns after stunning election loss.

1853: US commodore Matthew Perry lands at Kurihama (Yokosuka) and gives the shogun one letter from USA’s president asking for trade relations.
1908: In Japan, second government Katsura Taro (up to August 1911).
1937: Birth of Yoshiro Mori, Japanese Prime Minister from April 5, 2000 to April 26, 2001.
1968: Birth of Kazushi Sakuraba, Japanese mixed martial artist/professional wrestler.

1571: Death of Shimazu Takahisa, Japanese samurai and warlord.
1871: Birth of Kunikida Doppo, Japanese writer.
1888: In Japan, the stratovolcano Mount Bandai erupts killing approximately 500 people.
1922: Foundation of the Japanese Communist Party.
1971: The United Red Army is founded in Japan.
1992: Birth of Koharu Kusumi, J-pop singer, actress, television personality, essayist, and model.
2012: Death of Yoichi Takabayashi, Japanese director.
