Dancing with Canada

Day 2,294, 22:17 Published in USA USA by Derphoof

There is no such thing as a good war or a bad peace.

War will always have its consequences and peace will almost always prove to be better than war.

Even in eRepublik, this rings true. Yes, the USA may win wars across the globe. We may be able to assault and occupy the likes of Japan, Canada, and France, but it all comes at a cost. The most costly of these wars right now may be the war against Canada.

While we may be gaining precious resources from their lands, they have made us pay for them with wasted damage. That damage is constantly wasted in RW’s in regions like Quebec and Baja. They are two regions they know we will fight to keep. By having to fight for those regions, we are unable to help our allies to the fullest extent that we can.

Luckily, that hasn’t affected the ability of Sirius to perform on the battle recently. However, it could end up being the difference between a win and a loss in a key battle later on.

Gnilraps seeks to rectify this problem by making peace with Canada and trying to patch up relations as best as he can. However, he plans going about it in the wrong manner.

You cannot simply demand that Canada drop its MPP with Serbia overnight. They would much rather fight the USA than have foreign policy be dictated by it. (No matter how you phrase it. That’s how they will see it.) This is especially true in a Rylde term. He hates that kind of stuff.

The situation we find ourselves in now is based on several months of foreign policy decisions, spanning multiple administrations between our countries. As I made clear in my initial propaganda piece, we had our reasons for ceasing ties with Canada, but they also had reasons for moving towards Serbia. This cannot be undone in a couple of days by an agreement; let alone an agreement ceding land and payment in exchange for dropping an MPP with Serbia.

Canadians hold a lot of resentment toward the USA right now. After all, they supposedly wanted on the side of Sirius from the beginning. However, according to comments, it was not the Spanish or the Polish that turned them away. Nor was it their traditional mortal enemy, the Brits.

It was the USA that initially rejected that offer. The Wild Owl Administration felt it best to occupy Canada for resources than work with Canada. By doing this, the USA burned what little relations it had left with Canada. After being effectively cornered into this position, they will not be keen on having that same nation come back and say “Just drop the MPP and everything will be fine.”

Gnilraps wants to “dance” with Canada. However, his current proposal is more akin to us dragging an unwilling Canada across the dance floor while we whisper “isn’t this fun?”

That isn’t how we need to go about this.

An initial agreement must be reached.
Hostile rhetoric must be toned down.
Relations must be steadily improved over months.

All of this must be done in earnest by both sides.

This is the way to eventually pull Canada away from Serbia and back over to Sirius, where they supposedly initially wanted to be.

They know that we are anti-Serbia and they understand that. They too were anti-Serbia before this last shake-up occurred. Yet, they were also anti-Spoland as well. However, after their attack on the UK and our rejection of their proposal to join our side, they were left with Serbia & Co as their only option.

They know that any enemy of Serbia is welcome on our side. The MPP with Serbia is the only thing most Americans truly find unacceptable. However, right now they are much more inclined to trust Serbia than they are to trust us.

I may not always like the foreign policy decisions of Canada. However, I do like many of the people and I respect them and their willingness to fight.

If you want peace and stable relations with Canada, you must treat them as a fair partner and respect them as you would any other nation. Ultimatums and Brute Force are not going to make them like us or trust us.

Don’t be an aggressive dance partner. Be fair and gentle, assuring it is as fun for them as it is for us.

It takes two to tango.
