World Press Review and Ranking - Methodology

FACT! -- Journalism Means You Go Back to the Actual Facts.

We, the dedicated coffee-drinkers here at I.T. conducted a review and analysis of the World Press as of day 5758. The analysis conclusively demonstrates that some countries have a lively, active press while others do not.

Shocking.

We have ranked the liveliness and freshness of each country's press using the method described below. We also curated a selection of writing. Naturally, that selection is subjective. It includes articles written in different styles, focused on multiple topics and in several languages. ChatGPT was used to translate articles in full.

The ranking algorithm used the Top 10 Top Rated Artcles for each country as input. The formula takes the rounded sum of the following 4 points of evaluation:

*-* A Frequency score. Computed as 100 divided by (the Day of the newest Top Rated article minus the Day of the oldest Top Rated article). This gives a number that ups the ranking for a country that has more articles clustered around the newest article on the Top Ranked list and fewer articles that have lingered in the Top 10 for a long time.

*-* A Freshness score. Computed as (count of Top Rated articles less than 2 weeks old X 10) - (Day of the newest Top Rated artcle minus 5758, which is the date of publication of this article). This quantifies a ranking influence that privileges cases where a country has more articles published recently, with an additional bonus if they are closer to the current date.

*-* A Content score. Computed as 10 X count of Top Rated articles whose content is not simply "Please endorse me" or similar content-free text. This helps to rank up press feeds that have more articles containing something actually worth reading or viewing.

*-* An I.T. bonus. 75 points if the Interantional Tribune found an article on the feed that was interesting enough to share. There were many! Only some of them are included in this issue of I.T.

Example from the highest-ranked country, United Kingdom:

Newest article day : 5758
Oldest article day : 5756
Articles less than 2 weeks old : 10
Articles with actual content : 10
I.T. bonus? : yes

(100 / (5758 - 5756)) + ((10 X 10) - (5758 - 5758 )) + (10 X 10) + 75 = 325

Example from the lowest-ranked country, a tie between Uruguay and Colombia:

Newest article day : 5620
Oldest article day : 4907
Articles less than 2 weeks old : 0
Articles with actual content : 0
I.T. bonus? : no

(100 / (5620 - 4907)) + ((0 X 10) - (5758 - 5620)) + (0 X 10) + 0 = -138

Notes

This evaluation reflects a situation on one day in 2023 near the end of Summer/Winter. The media freshness and liveliness in each country fluctuates. This is a snapshot. Having a larger player base probably makes some difference. Probably being wiped for an extended period of time diminishes enthusiasm and negatively impacts the liveliness of a country's press as well.

Anecdotally, based on this romp through the world press, we observed that countries with a livelier, fresher press seem to have writers who use multiple writing styles, and who cover both real life and in-game topics. A sharp sense of humor among at least some writers also seems to be a hallmark of countries with a more robust press.

May the eRepublikan press of every country be an on-going source of amusement, information, and community-building. And may the ink forever flow in your favor,
