Whatever its evils, war with PEACE provided us with a purpose and allowed us to struggle and succeed as a community. The lowliest two-clicker felt the success of the eUSA in the war against PEACE as their own. It was not, like most political struggles, simply a contest between experienced, active players. Even relatively inexperienced players invested their time and resources into the struggle; the success of the country was their success as well. What we need now is a goal, an objective, a purpose. If we do not find something to provide that sense of purpose, we will fall into apathy, or be tempted into an unwinnable war.

The problem is many of the in-game goals cannot fill the void left by the war against PEACE. Take, for example, aspiring to high political office or getting 1000 subscriptions to your personal newspaper. Those are individual (albeit worthy) goals; you might succeed, but your fellow citizens do not really participate in your victory. It is your newspaper that succeeded, or you that became the next party president. Many of these goals even encourage competition between eUSA citizens, rather than fostering a sense of community. Just see some of the threads posted by experienced players, who remember that before PEACE, eUSA politics was all about bitter partisanship.

I hope that better, more experienced minds will begin to consider these questions. Josh Frost seems to have done an excellent so far, and we are all thankful for his role in skillfully guiding us through the turmoil created by the downfall of PEACE. I hope that he seizes this opportunity to convince us all that a world without PEACE does not have to mean a game without a purpose. In the meantime, I have a couple suggestions.

1. Lower taxes
The eUSA has some of the highest taxes in eRepublik. This made sense when we were fighting for our lives. I'm not sure that it still makes sense today. Let's consider lowering taxes and giving our corporations and citizens the competitive edge they deserve. We've become strong; let’s become prosperous as well.

2. Focus on growth
Many people have observed that the eUSA has failed to live up to its potential in terms of numbers of active members. Let's make it the goal of every citizen to change that. Encourage new people to join, and inactive players to participate fully. Ligtreb and the Welcoming Committee do excellent work; let's make sure they have the funding and help they need. If any program should be expanded in the days ahead, I nominate them.
