USA Congress Debates Presidential Motion to Withdraw from EDEN

In the aftermath of the Invasion of North America, when the empires of the PEACE Global Community were finally removed from the United States and Canada, the nations of the eRepublik Defense and Economic Network--which had been instrumental in securing North America--asked the United States to join the alliance as a formal member. President Josh Frost presented the proposal to the United States Congress, which deliberated and, despite reservations across the board due to some concerns for future problems, overwhelmingly approved entering EDEN.

The alliance worked together in campaigns throughout Europe and Asia, managing to destroy the empires of Iran and Indonesia, liberate Liaoning and Karnataka, and come closer than any effort before to seizing the crown jewel of the Hungarian Empire, Heilongjiang. Affairs in Europe coupled with defeats in Asia, though, turned much of the alliance's focus back towards that continent, which eventually led to many of the gains made in Asia being lost and the Phoenix powerhouse of Serbia gaining control of Liaoning. Miscommunication and a lack of clarity in common goals continued to plague the alliance in engagements such as the failed Battle of London during the invasion of the United Kingdom, the occupation of France and Germany, and problems on fronts throughout eastern Europe and Oceania. Miscommunication turned to anger both in the allied media and in closed channels, and pressure mounted in the American public and Congress to remove ourselves from the alliance.

President PigInZen and his advisers decided it was no longer in the best interests of the United States to remain in EDEN and made a motion to the eUS Congress to remove the country from the alliance. The Congress has spent an extraordinary amount of time debating the decision, listening from input from many prominent sources. As the issue moved to a vote, some congressmen tried desperately to hold off in order to allow more time for debate, but they were unable to. As of today, with the vote still open for senators to change their minds, a majority of the United States Congress has voted to officially remove the United States of America from the eRepublik Defense and Economic Network. This means that the United States will have more control over its foreign and military policies, but it also leaves the United States vulnerable and runs the risk of alienating former allies. Foreign affairs will be a major issue dominating the United States political process for the next month as the affairs of the world shift.

Latin American Alliance Collapses
As the United States has departed EDEN, it is simultaneously been working to improve personal relationships with other nations and strengthen the Brolliance. A decision by Ireland to begin the process of joining has been rebuked by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, who has said, "If your elected officials are standing shoulder to shoulder with the Brolliance then there may only be one course of action left for the UK and Phoenix to take." The not-so-veiled threat may play a part in Ireland's decision at the end of a month to join Canada, the USA, and Australia in alliance, or may act to further chill Irish-UK Relations.

Meanwhile, South America is in disarray as the ALA--the Latin American Alliance--which has been in existence since August has collapsed. Consisting of countries in South America, the ALA has long been considered to PEACE/Phoenix what Sol was to EDEN for a time-- partnered, but not the same. Phoenix members Brazil and Argentina, currently occupied with occupying South Africa, departed the alliance and set off a chain reaction that eventually led to its collapse. The ALA has always had chilled relations with regards to the United States for several reasons. First, PEACE/Phoenix members in the alliance helped to make it that way. Second, many looked at the constant take-over of Peru by people from Poland as a blight on relations. Third, several South American countries were complicit in attempting to conquer the United States during the Invasion of North America. And, coming from that, there has always been fear that the United States may seek revenge against Mexico and Colombia for their part in the invasion.

With the ALA disbanded and the United States departing EDEN, it appears as if some relations with the South may be on the mend. President PigInZen has proposed peace with Colombia to end a war that has been open since the summer when that nation tried to block U.S. attempts to regain its territory. The shake-up in EDEN, expansion efforts in the Brolliance, and the collapse of the ALA may lead to further surprising shake-ups and changes to foreign affairs over the next month.

POTUS Elections

In the United States, the election for Country President has entered full-swing. President PigInZen has announced that he is not seeking reelection, and has subsequently endorsed CivilAnarchy for president. Meanwhile, in a game changer, candidate Joe Newton withdrew from the race to instead run as Woxan's vice president. Rounding up the major candidates are kyle321n and Pizza the Hut. Parties will be holding primaries soon. The Libertarians will be conducting a forum tonight at 6:00 PM eRep time with candidates before choosing who to nominate; feel free to go watch.

Given the foreign affairs mentioned above, this election will be of great important in dealing with the direction of the United States and its future security.

Editorial Corner
I apologize for the lack of articles lately and not being able to focus on all the wonderful news going on. Most of my eRep time has been bogged down lately by much of the above foreign affairs stuff. I'm the Chairman of the Congressional Foreign Relations Advisory Subcommittee, and a Deputy Secretary of State (we've recently had a couple of retirements in State, spreading work around). So, yes, been busy, but I should hopefully be able to be doing more writing soon.

Also, I apologize and want to clarify the correction in my last story. China was not contemplating joining Phoenix. They had only posted Phoenix's membership requirements as a comparison to EDEN's in their decision whether or not to join EDEN. This was lost in translation, and I apologize for that too.

Dolphin to make up for it:

EDIT: Woldy has a lot of the same info too, if you want the "British Side" to this news, I suppose.
