Post War fun.

With the eUK surrounded on multiple fronts and bordering several Eden countries, our chances of invasion are always quite high. We've so far seen a blocking campaign to prevent us from attacking. However, is war such a bad thing?

We all know that war drives the economy in this game. We all know that war is a large part of appeal in this game. Even if you signed up for the political side of the game, it's still war that it the most exciting part. Wether it be a one on one fight, or wether you have super alliances such as Phoenix and Eden rearing their heads, if you country is involved, it gives you a goal, something to aim towards achieving, and a purpose.

Here, I shall be examining the positives of wars in eRepublik, the effect is has on the current populations, why it keeps the game going, the effect it has on countries and steps you need to take to make the most out of your war.

.
Anticipating the Push

As mentioned, countries such as Sweden and Canada have been 'blocking' the UK from launching counter attacks. Despite a slight blunder which resulted in the successful capture and liberation of some Spanish-Occupied French regions, Eden have been constantly blocking us for quite some time. As we are surrounded by many hostile countries, who have open wars with us an invasion has become an inevitability.

However, this sense of waiting, and the constant blocks have had a few side effects on the eUK, and Phoenix. Firstly, the blocks. Many of the attacks intended as a block have been on our home soil. This has activated MPP's and has also served as a huge training war for almost all of Phoenix. So whilst Eden has been stalling, people in Phoenix have been as healthy as ever and have also been ranking up. Meaning that when an invasion is attempted, we have a healthy strong international player base to help us through our tough times.

But what has happened to the eUK?
Unlike a lot of countries in eRepublik, we get on average over 100 new players every day. However, many players aren't interested in eRep, it doesn't quite compute with the perception they had when they signed up. But in these times of war, many more stay then they would otherwise. As a result, the active population of the eUK is growing. More people are making their way to the forums, and more people are making their way to IRC. Similarly, more people who were two clicking have gotten on the forums to find out what is going on, and how they can help out.

The main way in which people are helping out and getting involved is by joining the UK's military. The Royal Navy, and the Special Forces are increasing in size, and approximately 25% of the eUK's active population is enlisted, and many more are subscribed to the MoD's paper to follow public orders. Doing so will be essential should we be invaded. Communication is very much the key, between government branches, and importantly from the government to it's citizens. It's important that even if we are reduced to 1 region, you don't lose faith, and you keep fighting for the good of the eUK.

The Invasion Force.

As mentioned, we border many Eden countries. Canada borders Scotland, Denmark borders the North East of England (but can easily Swap Midtjylland to give that border to Sweden). The South West and Wales border Canada and the USA. The South East and the East of England border Spain. If an Invasion happens, I foresee Canada attacking Scotland and Sweden the North East, allowing them to move downwards into the North West and Yorkshire & Humberside. The Southern borders will be taken the USA and Spain, who will likely attempt to get themselves bordered to London. Following that, we'll see what Eden have become known for - the cycle attacks. This time, on London. Hypothetically speaking, Spain and the USA will take it in turns to attack London, preventing us from gaining the initiative, and wearing us down. It will be a constant struggle, either until counter attacks can be made from a Phoenix country, or until London falls.

But what will the invasion do for the eUK?
Well I envisage it being a bloody good laugh. Regardless of wether or not we come out on top, we will prosper from it. eHistory shows that the chances of a population spike (that is a significant rise in the active population - not necessarily a 'boom') are greatly increased when a country is involved in, or the victim of war. Take Countries such as Hungary, and Romania. They saw a boom in (e)WW1, with Romania as the aggressor who occupied many of Hungaries regions. Later on, when North America was invaded, they saw a huge boom of patriotic Americans getting online, to help liberate their country. More recently, Poland saw a boom when they invaded Germany (Polandball is anomalous, as they recieve a boom when they invade, instead of when they get invaded) and Bulgaria has seen a population spike after being occupied by Romania.

All countries who see a rise in activity have one thing in common. Wether on their own or due to the combined effort of their Allies, their occupied territories are liberated after a short period of time. Afterall, liberators often have the advantage of being able to move troops and plan Resistance Wars, without the occupier realising. Often RW's are started just before day change, meaning allied forces can attack and heal before the occupiers have had time to respond. That and the simple fact that being occupied gives every person in the occupied country, and the countries alliance something to fight for; a common goal to complete. In eRep there will always be an aggressor, and a defender. The imperiliasts and the opposition. However to some extent these words mean nothing in eRepublik. If it wasn't for the wars, I'd be playing Pokemon. There will always be an aggressor, it fuels the game. Someone has to do it, and when they do it's fun for both sides. Both sides try their hardest, and after a number of weeks the underdog overpowers the occupiers, and somewhere else in the eWorld another war will start, and the cycle continues.

The aftermath of War: Origins of Strength.

As mentioned, countries directly involved in war, wether they be the attacker, but more likely if they are the defender see a rise in activity, population, and as a result military strength. It is hard to predict what sort of increase we will see should the eUK be invaded. I doubt we'll see a boomt he likes of Poland or the US. I am, however confident that we will see a significant rise in our population. With this rise, and with coordination with our Allies in Phoenix we will liberate the eUK with relative ease. There are two reasons for this, the first, as outlined is that our alliance will rally behind a common Goal. This has already happened in Bulgaria, Germany, and Phoenix has also helped in France. Secondly, is because there's only so many Resistance Wars we can start, before people realise that holding onto high Grain regions in the eUK isn't worth the money they'd be spending trying to keep them. For these reasons I firmly believe that the occupation of the eUK would last no longer than one month.

Once the eUK regains it's sovereignity, a large issue for our government to focus on will be player retention. This will widely be done through the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) which under myself, Nice Guy Eddie, and Karacticus has for months been working on attracting new players to the eUK, getting people on the forums, and making eRepublik more interesting. There are various schemes already in existence designed solely to prevent people from leaving the game. Using API technology, new players are allowed to be contacted quickly and efficiently. The MoHA runs support schemes, as well as entertainment schemes to give people something to do on the forums, once they've finished their clicking in game. However, this still wouldn't help as much as continued fighting would.

During times of war, the type of player to sign up and get stuck in are the kind of players who are interested in the war module, fighting, helping their allies, and saving their country. To retain the majority of these players, war, or even better, a war in which the eUK is directly involved would be the best thing to do. Regular campaigns would help attract and keep many players. However, given who we are bordered too, the options are very limited. It will therefore be important to ensure the majority of our new players get into the military, where they can fight and remain interested in the game.

To conclude, you needn't worry about the war we're involved in. eRepublik is, a game. We shall fight our hardest, but if we do not come out on top, it will only strengthen us in the future. If our regions are occupied, the eUK will not disappear. Our country will be a different colour on the map. But we shall have a flag and a cause to rally behind, if anything, it will push us together. People are already having more fun, and activity is on the rise. That's what games are for, and it has always been in the spirit of the eUK to enjoy the game, and treat it as such.
