When I first started playing eRepublik over three years ago, I was a curious new player simply attempting to try and figure out what you were supposed to do here to have fun. Back in v1, the amount of time you had to wait to actually start playing was a bit longer than it is now. I had to wait three or four days before really being able to fight, and quite awhile more to join a Political Party. Being more interested in politics than anything else at the time, I immediately joined the America’s Advancement Party in the hopes of beginning my political career, and also because I had previously received a message from their Party President (Later I found out he did this to every new player in the country). Little did I know, however, that the AAP was actually one of the largest running jokes in the country, a party populated entirely of newbs and bots, spurned by incredible rates of inactivity. After a few days in the party, I finally found my way to the eRepublik Forums (Which also existed back then), and stumbled upon a topic that was oddly enough about Stalin vs Hitler, arguing who was the worst. After giving a bit of input and making my views known, I received a message from a certain Frederick Engels, informing me of the AAP’s true nature, and inviting me to this thing called the Socialist Freedom Party.
This was the beginning of a long, fantastic, and enthralling 1.5 year adventure under the banner of the Socialist Freedom Party, a period of time I wouldn’t trade for anything in this game, not CP, not Mod, nothing.

The Socialist Freedom Party started off as a gang of starry eyed idealists, running around the United States and international scene doing basically whatever the hell we wanted to do. We created paramilitary groups, liberated American states and foreign provinces alike, made issues of what we felt as important, and entertained ourselves through our role playing. We were the Freedom Fighters of the World. We were the voices of the opposition. We didn’t care what people thought, we simply cared about what we felt was morally right in this crazy game. If I had to choose the strangest thing we did, I would say it was the GOSPLAN, wherein the SFP moved it’s entire commune structure to Russia, in the hopes of creating a Socialist Economy within eRepublik, a feat no one had previously achieved. The plan had initial success in the q1 food market, but it was difficult to keep people working in a commune for months on end.

Some of the most interesting people I’ve ever met I met in the Socialist Freedom Party. Anarchists, Communists, Centrists looking for a bit of fun, anyone who wanted to join we allowed in. The SFP was a community of Retention. A community that adapted to the imaginations of all who joined it, and helped make dreams come true, however simple, or however complex they were. It embodied the spirit of eRepublik, that within this structure that we call a game, you have no limitations. You have the express ability to create a person, and to create a drive. Something that will make you log in each and every day, and do things others would consider menial, and useless, all with a warm feeling in your chest, and a smile on your face. These were the friends you would treasure, and the people you would do anything for. And they weren’t alone either. The USWP was a community of Retention. The eUS military was a community of Retention. The Federalists, the CvP, parties of all kinds and creeps fulfilled this idea. That the community was an extension of the citizen, and not the other way around.

Somewhere, in between these fights within our society, these admin changes, we lost it. Political parties became something for each person to reflect, instead of a reflection of its citizens. Paramilitary groups became Military Units, and started caring more about numbers than it’s people. We have become a society where the definition of success has become so constrained and confined that we will fit petty little conflicts over them. Too few people define their own paths, and we have far too many citizens taking the road most traveled. And a few select people have sullied the name of the actual exemplars of the road less taken, stealing the image of the outsider or the renegade as a means for personal gain, and in the process, slandering all those who truly embody those ideals. Truly, nothing pains me more than the idea that the beautiful structure and sense of community that kept me playing all these years has grown so weak before my eyes.
It’s not too late.

We can go back. If, for the first time in my life, I can call myself a Reactionary, this is that time. Now, obviously, as a President, I can only create conditions that are hospitable to such a retention based climate. In this respect, I have two indirect methods and two direct methods in mind.
1. Encouraging the creation of new Military Units, and their coordination with the Executive.
Note* Military Units dedicated to True Patriot Medals, Mercenary Medals, and relatively allied causes will not be left out~
2. Protect the Integrity of Non-PTO Political Parties, and facilitate the exchange of players with political ambition between those parties and the Executive.

The current administration has moved in a positive direction with the New Military Units, by putting in place a policy of publicizing all friendly Military Units in the White House Press Report. This is a good first step to build upon, and will be a continued policy. As for my ability to help bring in people from Political Parties to the executive, this primarily deals with the contention that not enough new people are being brought into the Executive, which is the subject of my next article, Opportunity.

As for the President’s ability to directly help facilitate these Communities, I have two things specifically in mind.
1. Renovation and Reinvigoration of the USAF
2. Beginning Initiatives in Recruitment and Retention Programs

The Reinvigoration of the USAF will be a project undertaken by my new Secretary of Defense, whose identity will be announced in Opportunity, and whose plan will be delineated in Purpose. However, the return of the Recruitment and Retention programs is something I can go into detail about, so here goes.

Two departments will be brought back into existence, albeit, in different forms than their predecessors. The Department of Citizen’s Affairs, and the Department of Recruitment. The Department of Citizen’s Affairs was an old Interior department, considered defunct by many people. It will be placed back jointly under the oversight of the Department of Interior and Department of Education, and given a number of new responsibilities, including that of the old Community Development Program, which was the Interior group dedicated to introducing New Players to the eUS metagame. The Department of Citizen’s Affairs will have the following goals and responsibilities:

1. Working alongside Party Recruitment and facilitating integration;
2. Helping make the eUSA forums welcoming to new players;
3. Promoting IRC usage;
4. Maintaining messaging groups to distribute information;

Now, it’s generally not a good idea to add a counter argument in your own platform, but I must mention why the Department of Recruitment is so vital to our success. No matter how effective our Department of Retention is, and no matter how much work they put into trying to get people to stay, there are going to be a large amount of people who join the game and immediately realize that they do not want to stay. This is a fact we can understand, and cannot ignore. This reality will always put a dent in whatever Retention numbers we have, which puts Retention at an effectiveness cap. The only way we can improve upon this reality is by increasing the amount of people who join, and therefore, increasing the total who stay.

The Department of Citizen Recruitment actually has an interesting backstory. The United States has attempted to create this department in various forms over the years, usually without success. REACH was the name of the program, and no one could seem to make it work correctly. At one point, even I was a director of this program. I couldn’t get it t work. The intent of achieving a baby boom was simply too complex a goal for any government program, and the pursuit of the holy grail, so to speak, led to the downfall of multiple attempts to make this program function efficiently. However, after a few tries, I started to notice something about the way that we attempted to bring in new citizens. People tried to go for the gold, and missed the little things in between. Stories of 10,000s of citizens joining small and irrelevant countries spoiled us into thinking that the only goal of a Recruitment program was that of the huge victory, in liu of the combination of small victories.
About a year ago, I tried the opposite of REACH. I put in place a program that had a lot of people do a few little things, and I called it eNASA. Over the two months I had this program functioning, we were able to bring in 320 new citizens, with roughly 82 of them staying active past the 1 month mark. You might be saying, “320 citizens? That’s nothing. And basically none of them stayed.” You’re right, in the grand scheme of things, 320 citizens for 2 months of work is basically nothing. Yet, understand that this was achieved with 6 people working for the program. Imagine if it was 10, or 50, or 100 people, all helping bring new players to the eUnited States. Not only does it help our Community, it brings gold to the people who participate, and it gives every player an opportunity to work in the Executive.

The Department of Citizen Recruitment will deal with the same things eNASA di😛
1. Gathering site links for top gaming sites;
2. Working with Social Media to advertise the eUnited States Community;
3. Contacting gaming communities for player exchanges;

This program has the potential for endless expansion, and endless reward to ourselves, and our community.

I apologize if I bored you with the long article, but I write to elaborate and to inform, and will not compromise that for the pursuit of simplicity.
I still need all the help I can get, America. Apply for these positions today if you truly want a change in our country.

I have a vision, and I’ll dedicate my heart and soul to fulfilling it.
Bring back the Retention Community.

Until Next Time,
Civilized Anarchism, at your service.
