Last Time on “So You Wanted a V2 Noob Guide”
After my first article in my on-going noob-guide series, I set out to educate myself on the dynamics of the health and happiness modules implemented since the release of V2. And as I so dramatically explained in my rant to the Admins in my last article, the formula to calculate health and happiness was abruptly changed. While I was admittedly frustrated, the new formula for calculating the health/happiness bonus from Food and Housing is an excellent and needed change to the system and I applaud the Admins for simplifying an unnecessarily complicated module.

Health and Happiness: A Guide to Complete Well Being
Health and Happiness is the new Wellness for V2 and it effects almost every single activity in eRepublik. Your player’s Health and Happiness levels help determine how productive you are when you work, how many profession skill points you gain when you study, how much you increase in rank when you train, and how much damage you do in battle. The more health and happiness you have when you complete everyone of those tasks, the more your player will benefit. In other words, you want to keep your health and happiness as high as possible (preferably at 100/100).

Fortunately for you, the Admins have made maintaining health and happiness much easier since the initial release of V2. While the previous formula determined the amount of health/happiness bonus you received from Food and Houses based upon your current Health and Happiness levels, the new formula gives you a direct health/happiness bonus based upon the quality of your Food or House. The new formula for health/happiness is very simple:

Health Increase = Food Health Quality + House Health Quality

Happiness Increase = Food Happiness Quality + House Happiness Quality

For example, if you have a 5 quality Food for health and a 5 quality Food for happiness your player will gain 5 health and 5 happiness at server reset. Once you have set up a good routine for your daily tasks, you’ll get in the habit of buying the same quality of Food on a daily basis.

Tepwnzor’s Health/Happiness Calculator
To assist you in determining your health/happiness levels at the end of the day I’ve developed this calculator and opened it to the public. While the new Food/House bonus formula makes the necessary calculations much easier, this calculator is useful because you can quickly change the hourly break down of your daily tasks and the quality of food you are using to find your preferred health and happiness.

To access and edit this calculator, click on this link. After you have opened the document, go to “File” --> “Make a copy...”. From there you will have your very own copy which you can edit and change as much as you want.

I'll be updating the calculator in the next day or two to make it more user friendly but it works correctly right now.

Health
For a more in depth understanding of Health in eRepublik there are a few things you should know. First, you can gain health from a few sources, including: food, moving with a moving ticket, hospitals (if you have fought in a battle that day), and health kits. There are also a number of ways in which you can lose health. When you work you lose health based on the quality of the company you work at (Quality 5 equals minus 5 points of health), studying (every study session subtracts one point of health), training (every training session subtracts one point of health), and fighting in battle. You also lose health on a daily basis if you do not have any food in your inventory.

So while many of the activities in V2 take away your health, you have plenty of options to maintain it at high levels. Hospitals, health kits, houses, and moving tickets are all useful choices for increasing your health but your primary tool for maintaining high health should be the use of Food. Hospitals are only useful if you are attempting to increase your health after many hard fought battles and cannot be used to restore the health lost from working and your other activities. Health kits are far too expensive. Houses are also expensive but for they can be a useful asset for players with the means to afford them. In V2, you can buy moving tickets that increase your health/happiness but they should be used primarily for changing residence due to their high prices. The best instance to use a moving ticket for health purposes is if you already have a 10 health food in your inventory but you require more health to finish the end of the day with 100. Thus, food is by far the best option for all players to maintain a high health level because it is both very cheap compared to most wages and also very effective since the formula update in V2.

While you can use the calculator to determine the best daily routine combination and quality of food/housing that you will need to maintain your health; I’ve also developed the following chart which includes all possible combinations of routines and food quality needed to maintain your health.

Quality 1 Company
Food Health Quality (Daily Routine Combination)
Q1 Food (Work)
Q2 Food (Work, Study)
Q3 Food (Work, Study, Train)

Happiness
Happiness is the other side to your well being and deserves the same if not more attention as health. You can increase your happiness a few ways: through the use of food, houses, moving tickets, or resting at the residential district. Your player can lose happiness by completing any of the daily tasks in the uptown area (working, studying, and training). You will lose one happiness for every hour you use working, training, and/or studying but you will gain one happiness for every hour you spend relaxing (plus what ever booster you choose).

The Happiness Deficit
The key to maintaining a high happiness is effective time management of all your daily tasks. You need to ensure that there is a proper balance between the amount of time you spend working, training, studying, and relaxing. Players quickly lose happiness if they are not relaxing for an appropriate amount of time every day due to what is called the happiness deficit. The happiness deficit can be explained as the fact that for every hour less that you allocate to working, training, or studying as opposed to relaxing at the residential district leads to two happiness lost. To help explain the happiness deficit, let’s explore the case of Bob.

Once upon a time there was a player named Bob who also happened to be a builder. Bob liked to work and he spent 12 hours at work every day building houses and hospitals for his country. He also liked to get in 2 hours of studying at the library on a daily basis so he could become an even BETTER builder. For the rest of the day Bob just relaxed at home for 10 hours and only used his basic gym at night. At this rate, Bob is losing 3 happiness every day but still stays happy since he gets a Q3 dinner at Dominos every night. Eventually Bob decides that he’s not learning enough and wants to spend more time in the library but he’s also saving up for a new house so he can’t afford to work less than 12 hours. Bob decides to cut back on his time at home and for the next week he only spends 9 hours every day at his house. Bob’s new daily routine is 12 hours working, 3 hours studying, and 9 hours relaxing with the same basic gym booster. A few day later, Bob realizes that the Q3 Food he was buying before his new daily routine is no longer enough to keep him happy because he’s now losing five happiness a day! The problem is Bob can’t figure out a way to buy nicer food while saving enough for his new house. Fortunately, Bob finds a treasure map of kings and he manages to spend his nights at California Pizza Kitchen getting a Quality 5 meal and eventually buys that house he’s been dreaming of...

The End?

Unfortunately for most of the rest of the players in eRep who don’t find a treasure map of kings, the story and problem of the happiness deficit does not end. Bob is an excellent example of the happiness deficit. First, he lost an additional point of happiness every day due to the one hour increase in time he spent studying. But, in order to maintain the amount of time he worked with the extra time studying, he had to decrease the amount of time studying by one hour. This led him to lose ANOTHER point of happiness every day. So for every extra hour Bob allocated to another activity other than relaxing, he lost two points of happiness.

Those two points of lost happiness encompasses the phenomena of the happiness deficit and it helps explain why poor daily task management has led so many players to lose so much happiness. While Bob could make up for the deficit by buying higher quality food, many players won’t be able to afford that extra food and will instead have to learn to engage in more effective task management. Thus the key to fighting the happiness deficit is spending enough time relaxing on a daily basis.

To help you maintain high happiness and avoid the deficit, you can either use my calculator oryou can refer to this chart to help you determine your best daily task combination.

Time Relaxing (Basic Booster): Food Happiness Quality; House Happiness Quality
12 Hours: No Food
11 Hours: Q1 Food
10 Hours: Q3 Food
9 Hours: Q5 Food
8 Hours: Q7 Food
7 Hours: Q9 Food
6 Hours: Q10 Food; Q1 House
5 Hours: Q10 Food; Q3 House
4 Hours: Q10 Food; Q5 House
3 Hours: Q10 Food; Q7 House
2 Hours: Q10 Food; Q9 House
1 Hour: Q10 Food; Q10 House*

*This is the max combination and at this rate you will be losing one happiness a day.

Every player will have to manage their daily tasks differently based on income and skill goals but it is clear that as you progress through the levels of eRepublik, you will be able to spend less time relaxing and more time working, studying, and training.

4. Use my new calculator to help you maintain your health/happiness.
5. You can increase your health by using food, moving with a moving ticket, using a hospital (if you have fought in a battle that day), and buying health kits.
6. You lose health by working (based upon the quality of your company), studying, training, and fighting in battles.
7. Food is the most efficient (best bang for your buck) way to increase your health.
8. You lose one happiness for every hour you work, train, or study.
9. The Happiness Deficit effects all players and occurs when players increase the amount of time spent on working, training, or studying by one hour and subsequently lose 2 points of happiness.
