Today we are going to look at the advantages and disadvantages of joining any of the three following alliances: EDEN, Phoenix and the Entente. Austria may join an alliance this month rather than staying neutral so I believe it would be a good idea if we have to choose between the three.
Austria's main priority, however, is Phoenix but that'll be decided in a countrywide referendum whenever negotiations have started and finished. What we really should do is a nationwide poll to see what people would rather be in, not be in or would rather see Austria stay neutral.
EDEN: Erepublik Defence & Economy Network
EDEN was formed after the dissolution of ATLANTIS and it is regarded as the new ATLANTIS. EDEN competes with Phoenix, another global alliance. There are 13 member countries. But the reason this is in the article is simply because we are going to have a look at the benefits and disadvantages to Austria in joining EDEN.
Benefits
We would be defended upon attack from Phoenix or other countries attempting to invade.
We would have training wars frequently.
We may receive financial aid from other EDEN countries - most of the EDEN countries have a very good and stable economy.
We would be allies to numerous big countries such as Poland and the United States.
Disadvantages
Austria is a small country, it would better for Austria to join in on a league with fellow small countries to defend itself - like the Entente.
Countries like Hungary and Russia, Phoenix countries, would refuse to defend Austria upon attack.
We are historic eRepublik allies of France, in signing a treaty with EDEN, we would be breaking their trust by joining an alliance that has taken over Metropolitan France.
We don't have that much gold or currency to pay for such an alliance with a large organisation - although we could receive financial help.
We would be less immune from attacks by neighbouring countries like Hungary.
We would not retain neutrality.
Phoenix
Phoenix is the other alliance on eRepublik and is larger than EDEN in terms of number of countries involved. There are 17 countries in Phoenix. Here are the benefits and disadvantages of joining Phoenix:
Benefits
France would more likely to admire our decision to join Phoenix than they would if we decided to join EDEN due to EDEN's possession of Metropolitan France's territories.
We would be allies with Hungary and, if Burgenland is returned to Hungary, we would find it easier to get Burgenland back. Although Slovenia is also Phoenix.
We may receive financial help.
We will be involved in frequent wars with EDEN - like the Brazil (Phoenix) and South Africa (EDEN) war.
We would be allianced with many countries that helped defend us against the Croats.
Disadvantages
We would not retain our neutrality.
Joining Phoenix may be quite expensive for eAustria.
We may be attacked more.
Entente
The Entente is an alliance for the neutrality of smaller countries, there are only 4 members of the alliance: France, Italy, Ukraine and Paraguay. It is an alternative to large alliances like EDEN and Phoenix.
Benefits
Upon attack we would be defended by other member nations of the Entente.
We would be in alliance with France, who currently requires help to be freed from the grasp of EDEN.
Would be cheaper due to less alliances.
We would retain neutrality
Disadvantages
It is a defensive alliance, they would only protect us from attack and won't help attack if we declare war.
Infrequent wars.
No Training Wars.
We won't receive financial support.
Summary
To summarise all of the above are reasonable choices to be a member of. In terms of benefits, the best one for eAustria would be Phoenix and the worst would be the Entente. I apologise if I missed any information out, I based the above on the information I read on the eRepublik wiki and skim through the charters of all three alliances. I also have to apologise that I did not include Sol in the above list.

Who do you think we should join, if we were to join an alliance? Or would you rather we stay completely neutral?

Comments
In regards to EDEN, many of the very same problems exist and others do as well, and you pointed out these problems a little more effectively in your article (for instance, being unable to defend France like we would be unable to defend South Africa in PHX.)
The reality is that joining either alliance is a betrayal of someone and prevents us from helping them, ceding our foreign policy off to another alliance. We don't need to be in an alliance to cooperate with them, whether its PHX, EDEN, or the Entente, where our interests truly coincide. We've worked with all 3 of them, and Sol as well, at different times. We've recieved financial support at different times from different alliances. We've been in training wars, without being in the alliance that hosts them.
Being in an alliance isn't a plus - Austria is in a tricky, precarious position. The more we can steer it ourselves and try to avoid mistakes, employing smart decision making, the better. The more our hands are tied by the large framework of alliances where we would be pushed into things, the less we will be able to handle this tricky position, and the more we will just be viewed as a pawn and therefore fair game to attack and invade. And lets face it, we would be a pawn.
I don't particularly think that eAustria should ally with groups but with individual countries instead - under specific terms of course, whether it be exclusively for training wars or for defence. Which is why tomorrow I'm going to do an issue on specific countries and benefits of aligning ourselves with that particular country.
Yea, that is much more effective. And we do have some good relationships with individual countries, such as Canada, Malaysia, South Africa, France. These bonds were formed due to similar outlooks - namely, a shared desire for being defensive and not aggressive. These are bonds that last beyond the rise and fall of any superalliance, and ultimately have a much better foundation then anything a superalliance could give.
Not to mention, the relationship would have equal footing and be based on respect, not consist of a little nation being in a much larger alliance.
imo you dont have to join any kind of group but still if you need help in fights with some one eden its more respectfull to small countries. look at venezuela or rpa. without eden help they will not exist.. and about entente. hmm for you hell no to weak alliance to help you with anything.
Austria's way is stay neutral.
Lyzer, ask Austria's French and Slovenian friends about EDEN. They always helped you and EDEN destroy them just like Germany, Bulgaria almost the UK and so on...
"Joining Phoenix may be quite expensive for eAustria."
Phoenix paymats are not even for every member. Large
countries (determined by a rate of active citizens at
the last few elections) must pay more than smaller ones.
We never got problems with it, and eGermany isn't a rich
country after all ... so that shouldn't be the point 😁
Lol, Lyzer. Venezuela was under PTO threat from EDEN so they temporarly gave away regions to Brasil. Eden ist the helper of many small nations like France, Germany, Boehmia, Slowenia, Bulgaria and so on ^-^
EDEN and respect for small countries, that's the best joke I've ever heared. (I don't think that Phoenix does respect small neutral countries, too, but EDEN even less.)
Do you want to be a second Peru or do you want to join those nations who you belong to (austria was a founding member of
PEACE afaik).
