Interview with President Benn Dover

Day 355, 19:28 Published in USA USA by John Wycliffe

The Summa Res Publica would like to graciously thank the President for sitting down, metaphorically speaking, for this interview. Enjoy.

SRP: Do you see any differences with how the office of the President operates under the v1 system as opposed to the beta system?

Mr. President: Oh, completely! Before, the president was like a totalitarian. Now, the congress [has] control. Unfortunately it is difficult to propose taxes now because congress can sometimes get out of control. Presidents can't even change the average market tax now, whereas they were the ONLY ones who could propose them back in Beta.

SRP: After this term as President, do you plan to run again for the POT(e)US?

Mr. President: I might, considering how well I do militarily, what experiences I gain, and how I advance as an individual. I'll have a lot of time in December like I do in November, so that isn't a problem. I feel as though if I get a good grasp for control over the military, foreign relations with Atlantis and other selected countries, and a nice feel for our country's economy, then I might just run again.

SRP: How many people do you believe the president should surround himself with to help him run the eUSA?

Mr. President: A lot, especially in such a large country. Each office, or each government program, should allocate many workers to spread the work force out. I feel as though I have successfully done this. (See my second-latest article). [ http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/-some-organization-military-update-taxes-mpps-and-the-cabinet--696605/1 ]

SRP: Ideally, would you like positions such as these to be made more official in the eRepublik world?

Mr. President: As in, implemented officially? No, actually. By not setting them in stone, you leave room for expansion, creativity, and innovation in the government.

SRP: What responsibilities do you think that the President of the eUnited States should certainly maintain if such a cabinet/VP system were in place?

Mr. President: They would have to pick out the correct cabinet/VP, so nothing would really change and no new responsibilities that a President does have now would be wrought.

SRP: Does the role of the current unicameral congress accurately represent the will of the people of the eUnited States? Is a balance of power maintained, or is this not an issue?

Mr. President: A balance of power IS maintained - that I can promise you. The congress system reflects what a majority of the population in our country desire, just like real-life. My congress make educated votes AND proposals, unlike in the past. This is a change for the better in V1.

SRP: Thank you for your time, is there anything else you would like the readers of Summa Res Publica to know?

Mr. President: Everybody in the military - keep your heads up. Be active for the next couple weeks 🙂

President Benn Dover expresses the desire to be affiliated with no party and is, as evident in the above, made it a priority to maintain the balance of power between Congress and the Office of the President. He was elected in November of 2008 with the backing of the Libertarian Party, United Constitutionalist Party, Democratic Party, America First Party, Federalist Party, and American Freedom Party.

In my express opinion, I think it would be a desirable thing if Presidential Candidates did not necessarily belong to a party, but ran with the support of several. This promotes cooperation and compromise. However, with multiple parties backing candidates, the system may dissolve to a two-party system given enough time. Political activism on the account of every citizen should be paramount to ensure the survival of a diverse set of views on the national stage of the eUSA. Who know, maybe you could become President.

On an intriguing note: what does President Dover mean when he speaks of possible military action by the eUSA? Does this have anything to do with the pending Mutual Protection Treaty with Argentina? More likely, this is a reference to the Australian Resistance War, but time will tell.
