Does Having a Presentation Affect the Elections?
dabman
Many eCanadians have asked the question that is presented as this article's title: Does having a presentation affect the congressional elections? Most answers that are given when this is brought up is: "yes", "of course", and "make sure you have a presentation!!!" But these are only logical guesses whether a presentation actually affects your chance of winning an election.
In a bold move, I have volunteered myself in an experiment to quantify exactly how much the presence of a presentation affects voter turnout for specific candidates. I have *no* current presentation, and I will not have one during congressional elections. My past history of votes tends to be relatively stable, so we'll get a chance to see how significant this effect will be during the election.
What do I hope to do by testing this? Well, perhaps I am doing this experiment only to show how underdeveloped the election system is in eRepublik. More needs to be done to help characterize candidates, and this experiment will help show that simply having a link to a broken url can increase the number of votes a candidate receives (this control will likely be done next month).
And what would be my presentation, if I did link to one?
Dabman's Presentation
My name is Dabman, and I am running to be re-elected as congressman of British Columbia. As a 4-term member of Congress, one must ask why I should be justified to running again. The answer lies in the following three words: experience, participation, and trust.
Experience
In the time that I have been an active member of the government of eCanada, I have gained a lot of knowledge about how congress works, and how the different branches of government interact online in eRepublik. I have recently been elected as a Cabinet member - as Minister of Communications to be specific - and this has furthered my knowledge about current affairs and politics.
Participation
As a congressman, I have worked hard to get congress to pass legislation for the placement of a Q5 Defense System in BC. I am proud to know that I (as well as Manson Tai) have played key roles in working with congress to achieve this critical legislation that benefits British Columbia and ultimately Canada. Unfortunately, this legislation was passed in Closed Door Congress, but believe me when I say I argued long and hard to convince other congress members that the DS is most beneficial in BC.
In these past few months, I have participated tremendously in the game in general. As MoC, I have written long and detailed articles regarding actions by the executive and legislative branches of government (example below):

As a congressman, a recent statistical survey by Adasko has shown I am one of the top-participating congress members on the eCanada forum. Even when ignoring the survey, it is easy to see how much time and thinking I contribute to the body of Congress. I work hard to work out compromises and get legislation passed quickly and cooperatively
Activity Statistics (mentioned above)
As a congressman and citizen, I also work hard to keep track and update a map of eCanada, so that Congress and citizens of eCanada are informed about our country:

Trust
I hope every citizen of BC and eCanada knows and trusts me, whether they disagree with my courses of actions or not. I truly am doing what I believe is right for eCanada, and I have always striven to represent BC as best as I can. I am welcome to anybody wanting to message me, and encourage discussion when citizens choose to do so.
Experience, Participation, and Trust. These are the three words I will continue to practice in my next term as congressman, and if you agree with my actions and my message, than I would be honored if you vote for me as congressman of British Columbia. Thank you.

Good Luck! Hope the people of B.C remembers to vote for you even without a presentation.
Perhaps if all presentations weren't pretty much clones it would make more of a difference.
Candidate A-I will do X
Candidate B-I will Do X plus whipped cream
Candidate C I will do X plus whipped cream and a cherry on top.
How many keep their promises? Not enough transparency to tell. There's no record of who votes for what. Or even who votes for that matter. Everyone expects politicians to say one thing and once elected deliver another. Present company excluded of course 🙂
I believe presentation make little to no difference partly because the way the vote is setup, you choose the party you are interested in first, then vote. The lazy gene kicks in and I doubt very many take the time to go back and read everyone's presentations.
That being said, not writing a presentation comes across as contempt of the process (your test notwithstanding Dabman).
Welcome back Dabman!! 😃 I'm writing my presentation as soon as I get a chance 😛 for now I don't think you'll mind if I spam your comments with our platform hehe

Excellent comments. I think you are right that there needs to be an in-game system that displays voting records, etc, and it should be easily-accessible for those wishing to check during election day.
Alias, you are certainly correct with regards to party members. I wonder about the effect independent voters may have, though. At any rate, this experiment may get a chance to test this out.
Nosyt,
Oh yeah, having the CSD platform on here wouldn't be a bad thing, absolutely!🙂
nice experiment. lets see how it turns out. i doubt it will make too much of a difference, but your probably going to get a couple less votes then last month mostly because the little blue link isn't there, not because of the presentation itself.
I like the political map. Good luck with your experiment.
lol 😛! It's almost in the same area of "I would like to tell this, but will not", but here, you really don't say, that just exist somewhere 😛!!
Honnestly, good luck Dabman!
Sorry for the spam. An article about the new achievemnts (Ambassador Medal). Please read, comment and vote for international!!

presentations mean that at least you are thinking of what you would like to do to represent the people. no one likes to see a bunch of cookie-cutter politicians toeing the party line or being "yes" men if it does absolutely no good for the nation. Judging by what I have seen so far, the politicians would be better advised to stop the infighting and opportunism and get on with making eCanada stronger instead of acting like a bunch of name calling preschoolers. they should inform the people of what they can expect if elected so that they can be held accountable. that is part of transparency.
Generally, an average citizen doesn't really care about who he/she votes for. If the voter sees someone they recognize (maybe on the forums or something), and believes that the person is doing an OK job, he/she'll vote for that person.
This, coupled with the fact that you've been on the BC ballot for a while now, dabman, means you shouldn't have much trouble getting re-elected.
that is exactly why he is the wrong person to do this experiment. people recognise his name, and so will vote for him. not that that is necessarily a bad thing. the point is, erepublik has the presentation feature for a reason, and I've noticed a lot of people running who do not have name recognition not posting their ideas on what they will do if elected. seeing as they are unknowns, it would be good to have some information in hand before making any decisions. standards, people, standards. no wonder eCanada can't get out of the quicksand.
Good work!!
I'm happy to say that the results are very interesting. I've taken a long time trying to decide how I will present the results, as it is very tricky to analyze this type of situation (with such a low sample size and all, there really isn't much to generalize, as others have suggested)
