Over the past few months, Canadians have benefitted from election campaigns based on plans and ideas. All of the parties presented their views of how our country would progress and develop. These parties did not necessarily agree on the methods and objectives, but they were willing to discuss and debate. We had a sharing of ideas. Canadians could make their choices based on these ideas.

This reasonable sharing has been cast aside in this election. Rather than honest discussion, one of the parties has turned to rumour, innuendo and name-calling. Instead of working to advance our country, we have been treated to a return of the “bad old days” of Canadian politics. Many of our citizens were not around to see the negative campaign against Cottus Arci.

Without going into a major history lesson, we can suffice it to say that the election was based on constant attacks against Cottus. Any policy discussion took a backseat to the attacks. It was highly effective. Cottus was defeated in the election because people bought into the attacks. Now, with the aid of some of those original players, we are seeing a return to negative politics.

This approach does nothing to help Canadians make an informed decision. It does nothing to strengthen Canada. That is what our parties should be concerned with: how do we make a stronger Canada. Fortunately, most of our major parties are willing to have this type of discussion. Unfortunately, these same parties are less vocal than the negative campaigners are.

I urge all Canadians to take the time to ask questions of the candidates. I urge all Canadians to press for a campaign of issues. I urge all Canadians to reject the campaign of rumour, innuendo and name-calling. Canadians deserve to know the issues. So far, the other side has drowned out these discussions. I believe that Canadians deserve better!
