[Phoenix] Fightback

Dear friends,

I have come to leadership of Phoenix at a difficult time. However the difficulties haven’t done anything but push us closer together; the friendships we forged over a year ago in the flames of victory have been quenched in the cold water of defeat. But remember that nothing lasts forever, and, as a great band* once said, “things can only get better”.

Now we are already seeing the beginnings of that. Perhaps not yet on the battlefield, but these things take time. Our victories in the RWs in Russia and Germany (and in battles elsewhere) were not because we suddenly got more gold, more men or more MPPs. They were because our countries pooled together their resources to fight and survive. Hungary made a huge sacrifice and surrendered their country, using their population to free the Russian-Romanian regions, followed by their own. This is the kind of sacrifice EDEN will never make, can never make.

Hungary made the sacrifice because they believed in Russia, and in the friendship they share. Can you imagine Poland, Romania or Spain making that sacrifice for their brothers? I can’t. Our strength is in our unity, their strength is in their individuality. Whenever their original regions are attacked, the articles start appearing. “Why are Spain/Romania/Poland/USA/so on defending that useless region when we have a far more important battle here??” The answer, EDEN friends, is that they care more about themselves than your alliance.

So what does my election bring to Phoenix. I am not a diplomat, and probably most of you who know me at all know me as an economist. For a long time I was treasurer of Phoenix, and economic advisor to our member states. Those of you in the UK will probably know me as being a bit authoritarian, and without being too melodramatic I think what Phoenix needs most now is an iron fist to hold us together and push us out of our current downslide, free our members and take the battle to a divided EDEN.

Of course all these promises are worth nothing without you, the Phoenix citizen. Whether you live in Brazil, Russia, Germany or Iran, we need your continued support and renewed effort if we are to win. We need you to sign up to your local military, and be prepared to spend your savings on food to fight. Most of all we need you to spread the word that this month, Phoenix is rising. Our people have spent a long time expecting defeat; it takes a while to shake of that kind of depression. So publish articles, shout “Phoenix is Rising”, get talking on your forums and IRC, and make some noise.

One of my promises this term was to end the media silence from Phoenix, so expect to hear from me more often than you might normally hear from an SG. And yes, I will comment on our battles, both victories and defeats. Because as everyone from Pyrrhus to the modern day general knows, even in defeat can positives be found.
