Quoting Rigour6 :

"At the end of the day, the cumulative effect of all the decisions we make (both here and in real life) both determine and express who we really are."

On the last days the media and one part of eCanadian society was in alert, because of what it has happened in our country.

Shortly, I will inform those who not know that long time ago, since he was eCanada's CP, our fellow citizen, Rolo Tamahsee has stolen from the country accounts like 6000 gold. As punishment, he was banned on forum and on IRC, because he has refused sistematically to return what he has stolen. http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/rolo-s-reconciliation-where-s-his-remorse-repentance-and-restitution--1900875/1/20. From time to time, different peoples have tried to obtain a pardon for him, in order to get back his full access on forum/IRC but the Congress didn't approved this. It is logical for me. In this time he has continued his behaviour by doing a lot of "amazing" things: grant CS to PTO'ers, buying votes, winning in this way the elections and showing with the finger everyone's mistakes, but not of his own, destroying 1-2-3 top 5 parties.
The important thing right now it's not this, but the action of some congress members who started a motion for FULL UNCONDITIONAL PARDON. What? Different peoples, different opinions.

Usually, before the elections some Congressmen have published articles where they have showed to the electorate the activity of different members of Congress. I hate to use this for to put me in a light most favorable over other candidates, but right now, after all this mess,I am very disappointed and I will try to show you whom are the people that you have elected.

I am not a real canadian, but since I live (in-game) here, in eCanada, I have tried to be a good citizen: paying taxes like other, helping another canadian players, fighting for eCanada. I was elected 5th time as Congresswoman in Quebec. Maybe some will say that I was more or less active/inactive. How can you measure how active/inactive you are? Based on forum/IRC activity? Or based on what decisions have you made (voting something, agree/disagree the proposals)?

Let's continue: the motion was started by crisfire:
"I would like to present a motion that gives Rolo a full unconditional pardon for all criminal actions commited up until a vote on this motion should it be approved

In return for this unconditional pardon that sees him recieve every access to the forums and IRC that a regular eCanadian has he has agreed to stop being eCanada's terrorist.".

Let me explain you: he ask us for a FULL UNCONDITIONAL PARDON, which means that he have no obligation to return anything stolen, not even a little cent, he will have full access everywhere, like nothing was happen'.

In this, crisfire was sustained by Homer J Simpson, by Sasha KammakitzJen, by Trenton Rendell, our honored Speaker of Congress, by Nogin the Nog and by Simon Boucher-Ruest. I don't care about their motivation, for me personal we don't have a right motivation to make a compromise with a thief. The vote has started and here we are:

24 hours are up, the votes are as follows.

YES: 12
NO: 10
Abstain: 1
Didn't vote: 11

Rolo Tahmasee has been granted an unconditional pardon.

Nice, isn't it?

Let's see who voted for an unconditional pardon?
crisfire
mirek12345
Sasha KammakitzJen
Code-Y
ultimate523
Homer J Simpson
Simon Boucher-Ruest
KateyValentine
Gary Hubert
Dierios
Nogin the Nog
James McNamara.

1 abstain, 11 didn't vote.

So, who win? Who lose?

Some public opinion of a few good citizens:

Jorge Salazar

"I can't believe that Congress is voting on this!

It's something like the USA giving a Medal to Osama Bin Laden to try to stop terrorist attacks! Ok, this is a game and Rolo just stole computer bytes called "Gold". I'm really concerned about the values of eCanada. This is a game played for RL people who bring his RL values to the game. This is not about a "virtual" criminal or terrorist, this is about how is reacting the "honest" people. Congress, what kind of values do you bring to this game?

Rolo is just a player with some companies bought with stolen gold. Do you want to stop him? Just deny government funding to the people that support him. How much naive people do you think there are in eCanada? Change their eLive supply for 30 tanks? Just explain to the people under Rolo's parties that if they continue in that party or they sell their vote they will lost all government support. I can help with the PM.

If that isn't enough, create an ATO fund. When an election is being PTO'ed, just buy enough votes for the second candidate and keep Rolo out of business. That will also give more strength to the eCanadian political system against foreign TO attempts.

Also create an official list of criminals. When I see Rolo doing something wrong I shut him up. It will be easier if I can paste a link to prove everything I say instead of explain it again and again.

I almost forgot something: If Rolo get pardon and gain more than 50% of Congress in next elections.... Well, you will find Rololand where used to be Canada.

I'm more concerned about what are we teaching to the RL people behind their computers. Are you sure you want a RL Canada with people who thinks that to steal is good if you corrupt enough people to have "influence".

Hey Congress members, you can change your vote before the voting process is ended. Just think about it."

"This whole situation is honestly very unexpected, and even more disappointing.

For everyone who says that Rolo has given everything he stole back, that's absolute bullshit. The guy built an economic empire off of stolen gold, and continues to profit from it to this day. If I had those resources, without having to pay for any of it, I'm sure I'd freely donate some tanks as well. Not to mention that someone people are even counting his bribes toward "paying it back", which is frankly ridiculous - as if he gains nothing from bribing people, because that's not the point of bribes.

Furthermore, is this not game based around community? I've heard it said over and over again, and yet some people seem to think that we should offer a pardon to someone who doesn't care about this community at all. Rolo has showed, time and time again, that he has absolutely no respect for all of the people who have put effort in to this game. With his theft he showed he had no respect for those who filled the treasury, with his bribes he shows he has no respect for those who try to get in to Congress legitimately, and with his PTOs he shows he has no respect for those who build up political parties.

That's what all of you congressmen have to lose if you pardon Rolo: respect. I for one will lose respect for anyone who votes in favor of that, and keep in mind that two of the people I respect most in this game have already done so. How can I not? Rolo doesn't respect you, and by giving in to him you show you don't care. Seriously - Rolo fucks us over, shows no signs of repentance, and in fact continues to fuck us over in a number of ways, and yet we offer to forget about all of that if only he stops fucking us over? Are we all captors in Rolo's twisted eWorld, or what?

Plus, what are we even offering him in return for playing nice? Something he can obviously live without. He doesn't care if he has (official) access to the forums or IRC. Even if we do give it back to him, what kind of threat is taking it away from him again? Being without it is the norm for him.

Respect is the most important part of this game, because if we don't respect each other we can't work with each other - which is exactly what we see in Congress over and over again. The lack of respect is why nothing gets done. People judge propositions based off of who is writing them - the two-bit trolls hate the long-posters, and the long-posters hate the two-bit trolls (and there's even infighting in those two groups, as well). It's like an actual, real world party system, for fuck's sake (and that is in no way a good thing.)

You know what? I don't think Rolo will ever respect us. I could very well be wrong, I'll admit, but I wouldn't be writing it down if I didn't believe it. Rolo has continually directed his effort to ruin the efforts of others, and our response to that is to ask him to please play nice with us - as if that will earn us his respect (as if we should even be concerned with earning his respect.) What we should be doing us trying to earn the respect of each other, so that we can finally work together and try to stop Rolo. I'm sure it will be something we'll have to keep working at, but if we actually start caring about the rest of our community, I'm sure we can do it. The only threat Rolo really presents is that of a PTO, and if we pool all of our resources (and maybe ask for some help from TEDEN) I'm sure that we can put up a good ATO. We might have to do it month after month, but I rather do that than compromise with someone like Rolo.

"Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon."

"I’ve long had an interest in returning to eCanada. My character is now self sufficient, I need no wealth, my strength and rank will probably accrue along the same path in eCanada as in the eUS. That MU auditor thing was attractive: a way in which to contribute to the eCanadian community. I suspect there are many players similarly situated and many reluctant to do the heavy lifting if they are certain, as am I, that anything we help build will simply be destroyed.

A day ago a respected player floated the idea of an unconditional pardon for a banned player. I would have thought significant debate was in order. A vote is called for almost immediately and the President is chastised for not commenting during the rather expeditious debate period. No public commentary has been sought. I offer one.

You risk losing a lot. You are guaranteed losing a lot. The benefit is highly improbable.

1. You will lose the ability to influence honesty in new players.
2. You will lose the “honesty and good faith” standard.
3. You will lose the Supreme Court.
4. You will lose the effort and commitment of a fair number of honest elite players
5. You will lose .. the list goes on.

Of course you will not influence the pardonee’s behavior except very slightly. He may no longer buy votes. Instead, the exact same result will be accomplished by others buying the same votes for the same purposes.
You will not have a Supreme Court to re-ban him as he will have done nothing wrong. Certainly, others who are already banned may do bad stuff, but that doesn’t matter. In addition, see #3 above.

You will have forgotten the past. You will have forgotten that Addy thought he was immune because he gave them some influence. They destroyed what he built.

You will have forgotten that 6+ million CAD sets up a player to do whatever he wants, and that you have few levers of control.

You will have forgotten the unrelenting attacks on players who are honest, hoping to portray eCanadian culture as greedy and grasping.

You will have forgotten that you can only control yourself and that if you pardon uncontrite large scale dishonesty the lesson will be apparent to many. As Rigour6 mentioned two years ago: you will complete construction of a kleptocracy."

Goran Thrax

"This seems like feeding the troll to me. A pardon simply rewards bad behaviour, as though that will somehow stop more bad behaviour.

Congress is considering an unconditional pardon of a person who pillaged the national accounts... Twice. Harrasses and slanders upstanding citizens and continues to commit acts of election fraud in contravention of laws passed by Congress.

Clearly Rolo is the eCanadian school-yard bully... And after a year and more of beating up the other school children, and stealing all their lunch money, Congress now proposes we go out and buy the bully an icecream, for a job well done.

And people wonder why so many of the older players just check out when they see this sort of thing."

"I think the funniest thing about this whole debate (and funny sad, not funny haha) is that Congress has once again usurped the prerogatives of other branches of government. I really miss the days when our government was balanced. When the Supreme Court actually overturned stupid laws Congress passed, when the President Vetoed, and it stuck... When the President issued pardons, as a check on the Court's ability to levy what could be considered excessive punishments...

Those were the days... Funny, our country actually you know, did stuff, and helped people, and didn't just throw money at MUs..

Well Congress, you have now done your level best to alienate every single informed voter in eCanada, good job.

I think a few people with far reaching newspapers might want to take the time before the next election to widely inform the electorate of the identity of the twelve Congress members who voted in favour of Rolo's pardon. let the electorate decide how they feel about it."

That's all folks.

What we have lost? Respect of another, some peoples have left our country (or will leave soon) Ehab, Rigour6, etemenanki has resigned as Comptroller ... people will lose their trust in us.

p.s. Sorry for the article being so long. Thanks for the patience to read this.

Last update: Kronos Q, our President "veto the motion, overturning the decision to pardon Rolo Tahmasee.".
