Latin form of Ptolemeos from the polemeios "warlike", "aggressive" or "son of war". Some autienrieth renders the meaning of the name to be an adjective from ptólemos, explained as a Homeric form of pólemos, "war".

Ptolemaeus was the name of one of the generals of Alexander the Great and several Macedonian Kings of Egypt
