Latin form of the Demetrios, which was derived from the name of the goddess Demetra (Dimitra, from dio "two" + mitra "uterus", the two uterus goddess).
Kings of Macedonia and the Macedonian Seleucid and Vactrian kingdoms have had this name.
The most famus of them, Demetrios I of Macedon (ruled 309-301 BC) was known as ‘Poliorketes’ (the ‘Beseiger’).
