Antigonus

The Latin form of Antigonos, which mean ‘like the ancestor’ from anti ‘like’ and goneus ‘ancestor’.

The name was borne by many kings of Macedonia.

This was the name of one of Alexander the Great’s generals. After Alexander died, he took control of most of Asia Minor.


He was known as Antigonus ‘Monophthalmos’ (‘the One-Eyed’).

Antigonos II was known as ‘Gonatas’ (‘knee, kneel’).
