UK-Ireland Affairs: Scotland

Day 1,714, 20:11 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Thomas765

Hey guys,
Today I've been trying to encourage people to fight for Ireland in the Scottish resistance wars. Why? For a simple reason: we have a treaty with Ireland that the government wishes to uphold.

Now there are many arguments for bringing the region back to the eUK and most of them are pretty solid. Scotland is a core region of the UK in real life, much like the rest of the UK. Scotland, again much like other regions of the UK, has a unique identity. But why should these things be taken into consideration in the game?

Speaking as someone who lives in Scotland in real life, I don't particularly care if my home is located in a different country on an online game. It's a bunch of pixels. If I wanted to be patriotic about it, I'd go to Ireland and be patriotic there, while maintaining my right to fight for the UK's allies. The only way you could be patriotic about Scotland in this game is to run for congress there or if it were to become it's own nation - which is unlikely for the next two years at least.

Background to the Peace Treaty

In March of this year when Talon Karrde was country president of the UK, we were in a dire situation. We had been three months without a congress and the currency was building up in our treasury. Ireland was becoming fed up of the constant wars between our two nations and we had completely lost enthusiasm to continue. A large number of our citizens were stuck abroad as a lack of congress meant that people could not come home.

At the time, the southern portion of Britain was occupied by France, while the north was occupied by Ireland and Canada having the remaining regions. Our weakest opponent was Ireland so we were constantly feuding with them in resistance wars.

By this point ONE was beginning to turn around as EDEN had basically chosen Turkey over then-member Bulgaria. Ireland, being a member of EDEN, was just as embroiled in the situation as other members and was one of the few that stood alongside Bulgaria for the entirety of the issue. Behind the scenes, peace was being considered at this point.

Upon announcement of the peace treaty, Ireland was facing threats from the west by Canada, who were angered by the fact Ireland signed peace despite initially telling them that they weren't going to. This was the first time that some UK citizens and some Irish citizens stood together, just to laugh at Canada. The peace treaty was born and finally agreed to by both governments and still exists today.

The Issue of Scotland

The aforementioned peace deal meant that the UK would lose both Northern Ireland and Scotland while Ireland would lose Dublin and Louth. Both countries would gain a resource and both would lose a region that they didn't logically need.

In real life, Dublin is the capital city of Ireland. Scotland is a constituent country of the UK, alongside England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This is where the issue of Scotland as part of the deal is borne because Scotland is basically a country within a country.

The arguments for bringing Scotland home

Now I'm bias towards Scotland remaining with Ireland because I see past the needless patriotic sense that has been brought to the game but here are what I see and I have heard would be the main reasons for Scotland to be part of the UK again:

- It is an original UK region
- Scotland has been treated like dirt by the administrations.
- No referendum was held about peace and the region swaps that resulted from it.
- Scotland is a unique region of the UK and should be returned so those who join the game who are Scottish can play the game in the region of Scotland - congress and such.
- We have been unable to have our part of the deal initiated, so we should have it back until we have Dublin and Louth.
- We cannot form a "Scottish community" without having Scotland as a region.
- "I love Scotland"
- Ireland don't Scotland at all, so why let them have it?
- Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, not Ireland.
- Scotland was given as a bargaining option for an enemy.

And for keeping it in Ireland...

- Scotland is only a region in-game. The main resource is cattle, which we already have in the South West of England.
- Scotland borders Norway (now Russia), so Ireland having it blocks them from gaining access to our island.
- Scotland contains the only border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK's core regions. Ireland having this is beneficial for when the UK's congress is at risk, so Ireland can RW Northern Ireland when required (as has been agreed and implemented in the past) to enable us to have a congress in times of foreign conquest.
- Scotland allows Ireland the chance to explore other wars, whilst maintaining peace with us.
- Scotland balances out an agreement that results in Ireland losing two regions. It's only fair we also lose two regions.
- Ireland have willingly given up their foremost core region, Dublin, to allow us to have access to fruit as and when we're able to.
- We had no room to be picky with the peace deal, given our situation at the time.

Conclusion

Scotland is it's own country by right as part of the United Kingdom. The citizens can on this game, by right, form a Scottish political party and form subcommunities on the forums if they want to. They can also fight for Scotland to be part of the UK in game but I'm just looking for reason here.

The peace deal may not be as secure had there been no regions involved in it. The regions are essentially formalising the deal into something proper; something that can exist.

But what is slightly annoying is that despite there being a topic on the UK forums about the treaty, none of those I've seen fighting against Ireland in the Scotland RWs have actually went there and posted why they believe Scotland should be brought back home.

I'm in favour of advancing Ireland-UK relations. We've been at war for a long period of time and it's great to see some degree of mutual coordination when it comes to the treaty. Personally, I'd like to see this continue and potentially evolve.

Disclaimer: I resigned from MoFA about two weeks ago so this isn't a government article.
