TRUTH OR DARE?

Day 1,676, 13:07 by Zeeuwsmeisje

[NEDERLANDS EVEN DOORSCROLLEN]

I offer my opponents a bargain: if they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them. ~Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952

Adlai Stevenson, an interesting character in American political history, never made it to become President. Maybe because he was ahead of his time. When I recently ran into this quote by him, it still made so much sense to me today, that I kept on to it - to one day share it with you. Now is a good time, I think. For I believe the eDutch political scenery is changing for the worse again, and 60 years ago he just put the finger on it.

I sense the knifes are once again being sharpened in our political arena. Not by definition a bad thing as healthy opposition is needed to keep politics alive. If we all just get along too well, politics tend to get quite boring and - especially new - players are drawn into politics if they feel there is a need to stand up for their beliefs.

My concern lies with the tendency to tell the ‘truth’ about other people, in a somewhat sorry attempt to counter attack what is being misunderstood for personal attacks. Old habits apparently die hard and old party politics rethoric once again seems to burl up. Maybe due to the fact that the current government with many ‘old’ players also has some old scarfs too - jumping in the ‘defense mode’ all too easy. Even when opposition is simply asking for explanation for actions or progress on campaign promises. You may like or dislike the style and tone, the questioning is just. Once instated, regardless your party background or level, you are to serve and answer to the people.

Today, the articles published about Garmr’s decision to NE Belgium led to some quite annoying comments. For example, the remark on Garmr’s side that ‘noobs’ should get to his level to understand the same issue 2 months ago was totally different. Without going into the matter, it is unnecessary and pretty low in my opinion to disqualify people in such a way.

The truth is, I know this experienced government works hard to achieve important goals. I certainly respect that and I do not wish to attack them in this regard. Moreover, I am hoping for better cooperation - but based on a more open debate, based on respect for our opponents in person. I am also not writing this article as propaganda - although I am sure this will be questioned the minute I publish. For I am a known member of GPN, and therefore immediately suspected of trying to win votes among the ‘common people’.

In fact, it is this that I find most disturbing: these generalist assumptions and accusations.
For example, the recent comment made by our CP on this article that, while being Minister of Recruitment and Coaching, I would have used the IRC channel #coachingNL to win over new members for GPN. Should I defend myself here? Okay, I did not and never would. Believe me or don’t believe me. Just keep in mind: the road you accuse your opponent from taking, is most likely the road you would have chosen yourself. [defense mode off]

Truth or dare?
Maybe eNL today is not yet ready for a new style politics, but I am willing to give it a shot. If you stop telling lies about us, it seems fair enough we stop telling the truth about you. I dare you.

TRUTH OR DARE?

I offer my opponents a bargain: if they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them. ~Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952

Geloof me, geloof me niet. [defense mode off]

Truth or dare?
I dare you.

I'm not regarding this as propaganda as most people don't even read the news anyway. I do see it, in my belief, crossing over the line from 'political constatation' to 'snide remarks towards Garmr' a few times. And that is without recognizing any wroingdoings from the side of the opposition.

And I stand by my remark regarding #coachingnl. I did not say it was on purpose, but it is quite obvious that someone would join the party of one of their first contacts in the game.

Yes, you are somewhat right Garmr :-] afterwards I noticed too I took your remarks, by accident actually as they were just the most annoying to me. But then again: hey, you wanted to be CP. You ARE RESPONSIBLE in the end ;-]

I still have the hope Garmr does this to help the citizens of the eNL, not "for the power" , as he claimed so before. That indescretion can be forgotten then. We're all on the road ahead.

As a new player who joined in the last month, I (yes) joined GPN. Not because ZM told me to, in fact she on several occasions refused to go into politics because she did not wish to sway new players, but because I noticed that three of the five people I actually had a conversation with in my first week were from GPN. As a new player you follow the people that put in some effort to help you, right?

SirSamuelVimes

That being said. I also feel strongly about one of the other points made in this article, namely that the CP and goverment was chosen by the people, for the people. They deserve some support, and respect. Even if someone personally disagrees with the outcome of the elections.

Indeed SirSamuelVimes, one can always complain afterwards, but also keep the positive in mind always. I myself, as a advisor, has put quit a lot of time to create the request sheet and will put some time in it to improve it still

Reductive, tbh. And the continious 'Voted' & 'Hooray, we are the damn opposition!' comments/votes included with this article shines a very biased light upon this situation, which steers unknowing players in a confusing direction. (Or for some elements within our country.. the 'right' direction?)
