Stories of the Guard: Spanish Mainland II

A continuation of Spanish Mainland...

By: Haliman

As I sat there, I tried to keep my mind occupied. My eyes couldn’t help but shoot over to the officer every so often. What was he guarding?

As I got up, I noticed he had a small pin on his jacket.

”A Serbian?” I whispered to myself. He definitely didn’t look Spanish. What was a Serbian commando doing here?

I turned to the room he was guarding. I walked in, and turned the light on. The light revealed a screen spanning the entire wall, and well as a computer in the corner. I walked over the the monitor. There was a flashdrive in it already. I didn’t have time to go through all of the files, so I saved what folders I could to the flashdrive, and turned around to the hall. I picked up my rifle from the ground, and made my way back upstairs.

I started to look around for Jadiv. I saw a lot of rooms wide open, but when I went in, they were empty. He must have gone upstairs to help Rick. As I ascended the steps, I noticed something. The area was eerily quiet. The shooting outside had stopped, and the mansion was still. Something was wrong. There was one door that was not open up here. I walked slowly at first, until I heard gunshots coming from that room. I ran, and kicked the door open. I saw Jadiv and Rick. They were taking cover behind a table. I noticed three-five hostiles in the next room shooting at them. ”Hal, go through the other door and go around!” Rick yelled.

I turned around, and ran to an open door on my left. Sure enough, I had a better angle on the group. I opened fire. I got two of them before the others took cover. They returned fire at me. I gave Jadiv and Rick the window they needed. I heard two distinct cracks from American guns. Then the shooting stopped. We regrouped.

”Jesus Christ” Jadiv said to me. ”You look like you just had an argument with a bus. What the hell happened to you?” I forgot. My face was bloodied and bruised. ”Nothing important. Any sign of the minister?”

Rick looked at me. ”Nothing. The intel must have been inaccurate. I got a glimpse outside when I passed a window earlier. We took the manor. I smiled. ”Let’s go report back to Axe.” The three of us turned, and started to walk out through the door.

All of a sudden, the closet opens up, and a civilian charges at us. He stabbed Rick in the shoulder with a letter opener. ”Argh!” Rick yelled in pain. He turned to the man, and shattered his face with a single punch. Rick sat on the ground. ”You alright man?” Jadiv asked. We helped Rick up, and Jadiv lent him his shoulder. I went over to the civilian. ”He matches the description. This is the minister.” I said.

”Good. Mission accomplished.” We turned to see Axe in the door way. ”We cleared the perimeter outside. Did you guys find anything else of value in here?” I pulled out the flashdrive. ”Yes, ma’am. But Rick’s hurt.” I said. She turned to him, and instructed the medic downstairs to get him checked out. He just needed some bandages. He was gonna be okay.

I went up to Axe. ”We need to regroup and see what’s on this thing.” I gave her the flashdrive.

As we walked into our command post in the area, Axe dismissed the soldiers near the computer. I plugged in the flashdrive, and pulled up the documents. ”These are... Serbian defense fortification plans.” The document detailed every base in the Serbian capital. Why was it here? Why did a Spanish minister have this computer here? And why was there a Serb commando defending it? We needed to find answers.

We loaded the minister on the evac chopper that came with us, and boarded ours. We started to fly southeast. ”What’s our next mission?” One of the guardsmen asked. Axe patted him on the shoulder. ”We’re going to Belgrade, boys.
