Stories of the Guard: Spanish Mainland I

A continuation of the Defense of Kentucky...

By: Haliman

It was about two and a half months since the reclamation of Kentucky before Rick and I saw combat again. We were offered to end our tour early, and take our purple hearts, but we knew we couldn’t leave. Not after what they did back in Kentucky. In Maryland, and Virginia. No. We had to take the fight to them. And we did just that.

Our unit was wiped out, so we got attached to another one that was missing a few guys. Rick and I mostly kept to ourselves on the chopper. It was a long ride to Castilla y Leon from our forward camp in Galicia. Finally, one of them broke the ice. ”Might as well get acquainted. Name’s Jadiv.” Before I could say anything, Rick shook his hand.

”I’m Rick. That’s Haliman over there.” Jadiv turned to me, and smiled. I stretched out my hand to shake his. As he shook my hand, he asked ”You two were in Kentucky, huh? We never saw action in the states, but Kentucky was the turning point. We started gaining ground again after that.”

”Yeah.” I said. “It got heated pretty quickly. Rick and I ended up getting wounded at Fort Campbell.” His eyes lit up. ”You guys were at Campbell? I heard it was a dead zone out there!”

Before I could answer, the pilot turned to us. ”We’re approaching Soria now. It’s a small city, but the Spaniards are dug in deep. We’re gonna be coming in hot.” As we flew in, our Commander Axe_Ccident got out of her seat, and addressed us. ”Remember team. Our mission is to capture the minister. He was extremely supportive of the invasion, and is a huge driving force in Spanish politics. We get him, the Spanish take a huge blow. Understood?”

”Yes ma’am!” We all replied. She pointed out the window. There was a huge manor. ”Most of our forces are heading to the main city to cut off reinforcements. Our objective is in there.”

We landed on a road to the west of the manor. There didn’t seem like there was anyone around. Not until we got to the compound’s gate. The manor was crawling with guards. We tried to sneak in, but they caught us early on. ”You guys go! We’ll take care of this!” Axe yelled to Rick, Jadiv and I. We ran to the side of the manor, and broke a window. As we entered, we noticed we were in dining room. Aside from the fighting that was outside, the mansion was still.

”Alright, we need to split up. Combat knives only at this point. They won’t be expecting people inside until the fighting outside has stopped.” I saw them both pull out their knives. ”Jadiv, you check around on this floor. Look for the Minister. He’s probably got plenty of guards with him, so make sure when you breach a room, you have your rifle ready.” I looked over at Rick. ”You too. But you go upstairs. I’ll take the basement.” I started to turn to the stairs, when Jadiv stopped me and Rick. ”Stay alive out there. Out of everyone I’ve ever known, you two deserve a drink the most. I smiled.

The basement ended up being one large hallway. There were two guards patrolling. I waited for one to get to me, and I put him in the sleeper. As I was setting him down, the other turned around. Before he could say a word, I threw my knife. He never made a sound. I got my knife, and saw three doors. I breached the first. There was a washer and dryer in here. ”Nothing.”

I opened the second door, and I heard a scream. It was a woman. The maid, by the looks of it. I shut the door. I turned around.

As I opened the third door, the room was pitch black. I reached for the light switch on the wall, when I felt my hand get smashed. ”Dammit!” I yelled. There was a hostile in here. An officer, by the looks of it. He kicked me to the floor. My rifle flew to the other side of the hall. He got on top of me, and started punching. I tried to block, but he just went for the body. I grabbed onto his hair, and pulled until the roots came out. Caught him with an uppercut to the jaw, which threw him off of me. I got up and pulled out my sidearm. I took aim, but he grabbed it before I could get him. The gun went off three times into the ceiling. Bang. Bang. Bang. I threw a headbutt. He was still going for it. I threw another, and we both fell to the floor. The pistol fell between us.

He started to crawl for it, but I kicked him in the face. He fell on his back. But he was still getting up. ”Oh, just stay down!” I put him in a headlock. I squeezed and squeezed. He smashed my nose with the back of his head. I had to let him go. He ran, and grabbed my gun. As he turned, I got up, and was able to stab him. I twisted the blade. He fell to the floor.

I grabbed my pistol, and sat against the wall for a few minutes. I was out of breath. And then I realized something.

Something important was in that room.
