Stories of the Guard: Kentucky II

A continuation of the defense of Kentucky...

By: Haliman

By the time I had woken up, they already dragged the survivors to makeshift jail cells. I was still going in and out of consciousness when I heard a familiar voice. Looks like I wasn’t the only one to survive.

“Hal, you alive over there?” I opened my eyes, and sat up. I couldn’t see anyone. It was pitch black. But I heard Rick in the cell next to mine. “That was insane.”

“What happened?” I asked him. Last thing I remembered was firing the AA gun on the roof. It all went black afterwards.

“One of the Tigres crashed into the building. It collapsed. Hell, the chopper crashed straight into you. I thought you were dead until they dragged you over her-”. I heard a cracking noise from his cell. There was a lot of shuffling. He just stopped talking...

”How’d you take the fall?” I asked.

Silence.

”You alright?” I asked again. I hoped to god he would answer soon.

Silence.

”Rick, are yo-” Before I could finish, I heard the same cracking noise in my cell. It was the sound of the door opening. I turned to look at it, and I saw a soldier standing there, panting.

He tackled me to the ground, and covered my mouth. I started to fight back, until I realized it was Rick. “We’re getting out of here.” He said.

As we made our way, out of the cell, I turned to his cell, and I saw two bodies at the door. “I was sharpening this stick to get ready for an escape plan, when they heard me. I charged them. He went over to one of the bodies, and picked up his sidearm. He tossed it to me. He took the other one. If I’m dying today, I’m bringing as many of these S.O.B.s with me. They’re gonna pay for all the blood they spilled.

We were moving as silently as we could throughout the camp. We passed plenty of patrols, but they were more focused about keeping the prisoners in line. They had no idea we escaped yet. As we were walking, the camp looked more and more familiar.

“This is the National Guard outpost, isn’t it? They really tore it down”. I said. He just kept walking until he made it to a garage. The door was already opened, but it was pitch black inside. ”So what’s the plan then?” He turned on the light, and it revealed an old Sherman Tank.

He turned to me, and smiled. It wasn’t his happy smile. It was his ‘shit’s about to go down’ smile. ”Shotgun”
