Special Report :: Portugal - Enemy at the Gates? (Part 1)
Nick Everdale
(Scroll down for Portuguese and Spanish Translations)
No eAmerican foreign policy issue is as pressing as Portugal’s presence in Mexico. The situation recently inflamed passions once again as national security hawks clamored for a full Portuguese withdrawal from Mexico while moderates urged a more nuanced approach.
Leading the charge was Secretary Danylo Halytskyj, recently appointed to head the Portugal Study Committee. Secretary Halytskyj was tasked by President Scrabman with investigating the current Congressional mood towards Portuguese presence in Mexico and developing a plan of action. He has wasted no time.
So soon after the failed invasion of Portugal, wounds are still fresh and opinion divided.
Some, like Secretary Halytskyj, claim that Portugal is an “enemy at the gates,” and a threat to what many hawks view as an underdefended Southern border. Moderates led by President Scrabman see no purpose in “kicking the tires” on a currently cold Portuguese conflict.
The debate has also brought to the fore accusations that President Dishmcds of Mexico is nothing but a PEACE puppet installed by Portugal, an argument weakened by the recent Portuguese return of Oaxaca to Mexico in a Resistance War.
However, George Barker notes curious irregularities in recent Mexican politics: An influx of foreign nationals boosting then-Candidate Dishmcds’ vote total in the final hours; foreign PEACE nationals holding high positions in Mexican government; the refusal of Portugal to return over sensitive oil lands to Mexico.
The situation has never been more sensitive.
It is the opinion of this newspaper that Mr. Barker’s accusations against Mexico and Portugal must be investigated as part of the Portugal Study Committee, but an assumption of innocence must be made. Strong diplomacy will be the way to solve the ongoing Portuguese war.
It is worth noting that, should we close this war, it would cost Portugal and PEACE heavily to re-open it, and even remaining in Mexico, the Portuguese would be forced to break through the formidable Florida wall, or move through Texas or Georgia – triggering intense ATLANTIS involvement.
For now, it seems, the situation rests in a stalemate where no nations are pleased.

Very informative, you're delivering interesting material already, subscribed and voted.
Good article, until I read this:
"foreign PEACE nationals holding high positions in Mexican government"
Then my credibility went downhill.
FYI eMexican Government: http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/success-ground-level-772807/1/20
All said in Arthk's text.
Now do as you want: war or diplomacy.
It should be noted that all comments are direct quotes drawn from eUSA government officials and eUSA citizens on public forums and are not necessarily the opinion of this newspaper or its editorial team.
We never seriously planned to take over Portugal, it was more a failed for the lulz attempt that came back to bite us in the ass.
this was posted by dish yesterday so I am assuming from this statement he has asked for the NE back "As promised, the tentative return date, providing the medal auction goes well will be in roughly 10 days for the Northeast."
My Cabinet Secretary Halytskyj is fully investigating these issues and has been in constant contact with me. He will be presenting his findings in the near future to a select group of eAmericans and then will report wider once the information is cleared for release.
Scrabman - eUSA President
There is a word to define the Portugal / USA relations, and the word is: «nonsense».
The first thing any idiot should consider would be the existence of a code of law that would determine and condition the actions of our neighbours and potential enemies.
The Portuguese have a constitution, signed in the Contracts area, where the attack against foreign countries is forbidden.
This is pathetic, but technically, even if the Portuguese invaded, the US could actually sue them and take any lands back.
Desertfalcon:
It is difficult to claim that there was no real intention of attacking the Portuguese, while an attack was staged against that country, exactly when they were being attacked by the Spaniards.
You might have no intention to take Portugal, but an attack against the Portuguese coordinated with the Spaniards is very short of all out war destined to exterminate them.
It is just absolutely stupid to go after puny countries which have absolutely no resources than can be of help to America, while the BIG problem of lack of IRON and DIAMONDS is not addressed.
It is SO CONVENIENT to divert America's attentions towards useless targets, while the REAL important objectives are being forgotten, I MIGHT ASK WHY, OH WHY …
We went against France, but the countries that were going to gain something were Spain and Sweden, which would grab high WOOD regions in that country.
We went against Portugal, but those who would profit would be the Spaniards.
We attacked Portugal to help the Spaniards and in return we activated a bunch of MPP's that actually helped Portugal to take Mexico back.
If Portugal is a problem, then it's a problem created by Ben Dover and Justinious (for fun or lulz, but a problem nevertheless).
Portugal has a population of little more than 2.000. It represents no real danger to America, and it has no resource that we can use, for they have nothing we don't have already.

I know I am a new player, but here are my honest opinions, correct me where I am wrong. The ongoing wargames with Mexico seem to prove how strong of an ally they are, regardless of alliance affiliation. As Americans, I think that protecting the sovereignty of our neighbors and allies should be a top priority.
Although Mexico's population is small at the moment, I hope that it continues to grow to a point that could push US-Mexico-Portugal relations to a head. Although it may be feasible to take Portugese held Mexico by force, I do not feel that it would be prudent. If Arthk is sincere in his assertions, then perhaps a more active and vibrant Mexico would be able to reclaim their lands diplomatically.
Many Americans are complaining about our participation in Atlantis, and certainly PEACE is just as bad if not worse when it comes to imperialist actions. I realize this would be a dramatic shift from the status quo, but perhaps a more withdrawn and western-hempishere-centric (yes i just invented that word) approach could suit the US in the future. Maintaining strong relations with Mexico AND Portugal could help us reach out to South America.
/wall of text, please tell me all the reasons i'm wrong as i'm sure there are many.
Xavier - with your permission I will be including a segment of your commentary in the next part of the Portugal series (released either tomorrow or Wednesday)
por que no lo ponen en español?
@Nick Everdale. Maybe next time you will wanna to check all your sources before publish lies, half truth and misinformation in the US media and also invite international characters. But it is only a advice.
@Scrab! Just to tell you that your Secretary Danylo Halytskyj. It's doing a horrible job! LOL. Unless your mayor intention, and his mission was really to misinform the US public plus the US Government and try to make the link between Portugal and Mexico even closed, he is a genius.
@Danylo Halytskyj. LOL. And you think because that Dish's quote he is a Portuguese? I see you don't know anything about Erepublik history. Until USA attack Mexico, Dish was a proud-hearted ATLANTIS citizen! Another think to thank USA.
@Arthk. Like always: +1
I'm sorry you didn't approve of the tone of the article. Any suggestions for improving it, Dhoo?
For 5 gold, i'll translate it to REAL and CORRECT portuguese, it isn't even understandable.
Arthk +1
@Xavier Veritas, what are you talking about? Do you even know why Portugal has mexican regions? Because USA tried to annex Mexico and Portugal came to the rescue. Portugal and Mexico are friends, USA is the imperialistic agressor.
@Euphonix, thanks for the correction, I still think my point at large is a good one. I was just arguing that the USA needs to change its behavior and its image with all of our neighbors to the south. I know that the American leadership has acted foolishly in the past, and that upsets me, but to many of the recent baby-boomers like myself that feels like ancient history - it wasn't our fault and we wouldn't have supported it. I know that doesn't mean the world will forget recent history, but if American leadership sincerely shows a desire to work together I don't see why it should be impossible.
PEACE and Atlantis are too influenced by Indonesia and Romania respectively, I don't know how defending them in their imperialist struggles directly benefits the USA. Are there mutual trade deals or anything like that? I would love to know. It seems like we are just in an Alliance because it seemed like the thing to do when the world was splitting down the middle. Maybe a return to a PANAM style agreement could be most beneficial for all the parties involved. I don't know how much work the US government does reaching out to South America but it seems like our motives should be more in line with one another.
Like I said before, I don't pretend to be some great historian, just looking to share perspectives and opinions. Responses appreciated.
1. Mexico and Portugal are close allies. What does that have to do with PEACE or Atlantis?
2. We're staunch allies of PEACE, because unlike the US and Atlantis, you know, they actually didnt try to invade us?
3. Portugal occupies Mexican regions to protect us, and are in the process of returning them.
4. The PANAM would be eaten alive anymore, and if anything the divide between languages would force the US out of it. Considering the US and Canada are the only two primarily English Speaking Nations in the entire region, so I dont see that happening.
5. Relations with the US and Mexico are improving, despite many moronic PM's from people telling me how I need to die, and despite many fear-mongering Congressmen who simply want to reinvade. Scrabman's administration has been excellent in keeping contact with us, and we're both working on furthering that. However, one sided articles like this, regardless of who said what, isn't going to help that. This isnt truth, unbias, or opinion from anyone who actually has insight as to whats going on. There are roughly 4 of us that do, and I hardly see any of our opinions in that article.
Great article!

No, I don't think dish is Portugese, I KNOW he is the president of Mexico. And I KNOW that is his quote because he posted it. I do THINK, however that you have a problem reading and comprehending a simple statement.
