Poscomms, Please: Editorial

Day 2,716, 15:26 Published in Australia Australia by JackTrout

(TL/DR below)

Communication is critical to good relationships—between individuals, within and between groups, with government, across society, and between countries. If we cannot communicate well, we will not accomplish much, and the teamwork so essential to any society will be either laborious or nonexistent.

Lately, eAustralia seems to have a dearth of positive communications (or poscomms, if you share certain RL industries). Poscomms: State your position clearly, and ensure that the listener understands. Listener, ask questions until you can assure the speaker that you understand.

We don’t have to agree- but we have to understand each others’ points of view. And we have to be willing to listen to opinions different from our own.

Very few of us (absolutely including myself) have been good enough at communications lately. I am not naming, blaming, or shaming—there has been far too much of that already.

I just wanted to remind all of us about one of the universal truths about how we speak (or in this case, write) to each other:

Communication is irrevocable. Once said, nothing can be unsaid.

The corollary: If you act before speaking, your action becomes your words.

You may regret your actions or something you said. You may wish you hadn’t said or done it, and you may even be forgiven for it—but there is no taking it back. Once your words and actions are out in the world, they will always exist.

Speaking without thinking can strain the best of relationships, and leads easily to devastating rifts between individuals and groups. A bit of forethought and attention to poscomms will be absolutely required to bring eAustralia back together.

TL/DR: Let’s all try to be clearer, and be more understanding and civil to each other. Speak your truths, and listen to others. Then maybe we can start to accomplish things together. Let the true dialogue begin.
