New Players - How to join in with irc

Day 1,785, 06:29 Published in Australia Australia by Aus Ministry of Finance

What is IRC?

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a widely used method of online communication. It is very popular for group chatting, as it offers the ability to have ongoing chatrooms that anybody can connect to.

Most countries in eRepublik use irc and eAustralia is no exception. Much of eAustralia’s active population is on IRC nightly discussing all sort of topics, involving the game, such as how to eat adn train, or military strategy or just general chit chat. It’s a great place to meet new people and learn more about the game.

How do I get involved?
To get started you need some software to operate IRC. The easiest way is to use an online client (no downloads).

Mibbit
Mibbit runs in your browser and is by far the easiest way to get into IRC. To join, just click the link below. Just enter your preferred nickname and join us straight away!

Other IRC Clients
There a lot of other programs that you can use to connect to irc - mIRC, Chatzilla, XChat, Pidgin to name a few. If you have one of these installed on your computer, the method to setup are all fairly similar ans require these details:

Server: irc.rizon.net
Channel: #ausrep

If you don’t have an IRC client installed on your computer and you would like to get one, ask in the #ausrep channel or the #aushelp channel (see below for instructions on how to join) and someone will be willing to assist you.

When should I go on IRC?

The best time to go on IRC to talk to aussies is during the evenings in RL Australia time. Things tend to pick up around 7pm (eastern time, adjust for your time zones) and run late into the night before people finally go to bed. Weekends are obviously a great time to be around too. Of course, you could find a conversation happening at any hour of the day! If you use channels for other countries there are viirtually no time limits.

Getting around IRC
There are four commands that every IRC-goer should know. Every command begins with a slash (/), and the four most important are:

/join - Joins an IRC channel (chatroom). Each channel is prefixed with a hash. The two most important channels are #ausrep (the eAustralia general channel) and #aushelp (the Department of Education help channel). There are many other channels, for military units, political parties, and other groups.

/part - Leaves an IRC channel. For example, you could use /part #ausrep to leave the #ausrep channel - not that you would ever want to!

/nick - Changes your name on IRC.

/msg - Sends a private message to somebody. For example, “/msg venja Hello, I’m new on IRC!” would tell me that you’re new!

I need help!

If you need any help contact venja (the Minister for Education) Click on the mail icon on the top-right corner of our profiles to send us a message and we’ll be more than happy to help you. Alternatively, if you can get onto IRC, you can find us in the #aushelp channel.
