[Dept. of Education] IRC - Getting Connected

Day 1,508, 04:26 Published in Australia Australia by Aus Ministry of Finance

What is IRC?

IRC (Internet Relay Chat, also known as “multiplayer notepad”) is a widely used communication protocol. It is very popular for group chatting, as it offers the ability to have persistent chatrooms that anybody can connect to.

IRC is used by eAustralia (and the rest of eRepublik) to host chatrooms that players can connect to and chat with their fellow eCitizens. Much of eAustralia’s active population is on IRC nightly discussing any and all topics. It’s a great place to meet new people and chat.

How do I get involved?
There are multiple ways to get connected to the eAustralian IRC channels.

Mibbit
Mibbit runs in your browser and is by far the easiest way to get into IRC. To join, just click the link below. Just enter your preferred nickname and join us straight away!

Join the eAustralian IRC channel!

Note: eRepublik will print a warning to make sure you know the link is safe before following it - it does this for every link outside of eRepublik that is posted in the game. You can be sure that this link is safe!

Other IRC Clients
There a lot of other programs that you can use to connect to irc - mIRC, Chatzilla, XChat, Pidgin to name a few. If you have one of these installed on your computer, the details you need to connect to the eAustralian IRC channel are:

Server: irc.rizon.net
Channel: #ausrep

If you don’t have an IRC client installed on your computer and you would like to get one, ask in the #ausrep channel or the #auseducation channel (see below for instructions on how to join) and someone will be willing to assist you.

When should I go on IRC?

The best time to go on IRC is during the evenings in RL Australia time. Things tend to pick up around 7pm (eastern time, adjust for your time zones) and run late into the night before people finally go to bed. Weekends are obviously a great time to be around too. Of course, you could find a conversation happening at any hour of the day!

Getting around IRC
There are four commands that every IRC-goer should know. Every command begins with a slash (/), and the four most important are:

/join - Joins an IRC channel (chatroom). Each channel is prefixed with a hash. The two most important channels are #ausrep (the eAustralia general channel) and #auseducation (the Department of Education help channel). There are many other channels, for military units, political parties, and other groups.

/part - Leaves an IRC channel. For example, you could use /part #ausrep to leave the #ausrep channel - not that you would ever want to!

/nick - Changes your name on IRC.

/msg - Sends a private message to somebody. For example, “/msg mudkip_mcmudkip Hello, I’m new on IRC!” would tell me that you’re new!

I need help!

If you need any help contact Kaltiz (the Minister for Education) or Mudkip McMudkip (the Deputy Minister of Education). Click on the mail icon on the top-right corner of our profiles to send us a message and we’ll be more than happy to help you. Alternatively, if you can get onto IRC, you can find us in the #auseducation channel.

That’s all we’ll be covering in this article. In the not too distant future I’ll return to tell you all about some advanced IRC stuff, such as registering your nickname so only you can use it and interacting with the eRepublik IRC bot that will give you some handy information about your character!
