I made a mistake in 2000 Q3 Food, 4000 Gifts, and a Q5 House FREE . . . I didn't reckon that I wouldn't be able to see all the comments or that the article would become completely impervious to editing. Oops, there seems to be a problem...

Now it's time to learn a little more about Wellness!


If Johnny has 50 Wellness and Suzy gives him 2 Gifts, how much Wellness does Johnny have? That's right, 52.
If Johnny has 50 Wellness and no House and Suzy gives him Q3 Food, how much Wellness does Johnny have tomorrow? That's right, 53.
If Johnny has 82 Wellness and Suzy gives him 2 Gifts, how much Wellness does Johnny have? That's right, 84.

Well, you have to understand that the effectiveness of Food and Housing varies from 1.5 times the effect (at 0 Wellness) down to 0.5 times the effect (at 100 Wellness) with a linear difference of 0.01 times effectiveness for every point of Wellness at the end of the day (read the wiki page over and over until you get it). So, at 82 Wellness, you get 0.68 times the effect of the combination of your Food and House Quality numbers. In this case, he gets 2.04 for a total 84.04. (And, of course, without Food you starve, getting a big penalty and no benefit from the House.)

You can find more information by looking at the Wellness page on the official wiki and by playing with a wellness calculator. The one from AndraX2000 is good for judging the cost-effectiveness of gifting, relative to Food, in reaching a Wellness goal. The one at CCCP is good at projecting figures out for several days for the use of Food and a House.


Things just got complicated...

Immediately we have seen several effects of the Wellness change (albeit, not permanent).

All Houses increased in value.
Q5 Houses nearly doubled in value.
Gifts nearly doubled in value.
Food of Q3 and above increased in value.
Food of Q1 decreased slightly in value.

This was all quite predictable. The activity in the raw materials market is also fairly predictable in terms of the benefit seen to Wood and Diamonds, which are serving the Houses and Gifts industries. Grain will need a much longer period in which to recover from its perpetual surplus, if it ever does. Investors should be identifying the benefiting profitable industries (Houses, high-Quality Food, and Gifts) and their corresponding Raw Materials (Wood and Diamonds) and activating or creating more company infrastructure that may bring the supply for this new demand.

It will be interesting to observe the behavior of employers and employees. Until now, industries of every Quality have held a truce between the benefit to the employer of having high Wellness and the cost to the employee of maintaining it. The employer could always point to the opportunity to fight four times in a day instead of five to bring up the difference for free. In this way, employers convinced employees to sacrifice damage in exchange for an efficient job market.

This truce was always uneasy, with many employees failing to understand the role of Wellness or just refusing to play by the book, but it is soon going to evaporate. For employers and employees both, it will be much more valuable to be in direct communication so as to understand better the capabilities of the employee in terms of maintaining Wellness at a specific level and being paid accordingly. Employers with real relationships with their employees will have less turnover, less inefficiency from low Wellness workers, less inefficiency from not being at Max Productivity, and thereby be able to outcompete those employers that remain incommunicado and laissez faire.

The number of employees with severe Wellness problems looking for work will increase. The "fringe benefit" of a low-Quality company increased dramatically, and, likewise, the production value of a good worker in a high-Quality company increased. When employers figure this out, the high-Quality jobs will dominate the wage market in every sector: Manufacture, Constructions, and Land. However, workers who act on reflex will take them in greater numbers. And then the number of employees with severe Wellness problems looking for work will increase more.

Never before have comprehensive education and health maintenance programs been as important for countries as they are now. Outreach will have to be active if it wants the most success, because those who are at greatest risk are those who don't even know they have a problem.

At the same time, the importance of having a high-Quality House for anyone not in a Q1 company is high, as the savings in maintaining Wellness and the benefits as a fighter add up very quickly. Even for those in a Q1 company, having a House of Q1 to Q3 helps quite a bit. All this and more in a coming article on ways to survive as an employer or employee under the new rules.
