Farewell NaN, goodbye democracy

Day 2,035, 14:10 Published in Australia Australia by Paul J Keating

This article is written in my capacity as a private citizen, I have not consulted with my party to determine the members’ opinions yet however I cannot in good conscience leave this issue to rest.

About a day ago our Country President proposed a law to leave our current alliance, NaN. Personally I was surprised. There had been a discussion thread in senate forum, and a few threads in the public gallery where a few people were debating the relative merits of this, but as far as I could see no formal proposal had been made, and here we are suddenly on the cusp of leaving an alliance?

I don’t wish to make any comment on whether leaving NaN is a good or bad idea, that is not the point of this article. My issue is that there was no public consultation, no real debate, no formal proposal and clearly no intention of generating any kind of consensus. The democratic process and eAus legislative framework was completely ignored in this move.

In the APP CP Primaries Molly Jo made the following statement when questioned about her position on NaN:

This turn of events clearly flies in the face of Molly Jo’s commitment prior to becoming CP. No integrity, no leading by example.

And who is responsible for ensuring senate protocols are followed? The speaker, Tim_Holtz who has been the most strident proponent of leaving NaN. When I expressed my concern at potential conflict of interest this was the answer I got:

So where’s the compartmentalising of roles when you’ve allowed an in-game proposal to go ahead without discussion, debate or any hint of respect for process? When you did nothing to alert senate to vote ‘no’ to an illegal proposal? When you considered the best punishment to impose a few lulzy forum penalty points which is a completely inappropriate form of punishment unrelated to our process? The speaker should be the first in line to sanction such an obvious breach on an issue of such magnitude and call for impeachment.

No wonder the IG Sir_c0nstant has resigned in disgust with the comment:

“I find the position is now untenable when the executive and senate branches of government can not act with due diligence within the framework of the law”

Whether or not this is a good idea, whether or not NaN is good for us, the day we accept that the people in power can make arbitrary decisions of such magnitude without any kind of mandate or public consultation is the day democracy dies. I am not an expert in foreign affairs or military matters but those in power expect me and you to follow orders and fight hard in wars for our country. The least we deserve is a little respect and maybe a few scraps of information.

I am disgusted by the contempt with which the eAus community has been treated.
