Daily Living : Media (Basic)

Day 1,106, 16:33 Published in Ireland Ireland by Sean Power
Intro
Now... you’ve read a single word … vote it up... it doesn’t get any better from here on ^.^

Welcome to this very basic guide to the Media Module. Can’t really think of anything else to say here... it’s intended for complete beginners but there are few interesting additions including a list of english(ish) speaking countries with some surprises if you still think real life = erepublik. There’s also some crap images to direct people to the Official Government Newspapers and a recommended subscriptions area which may appeal to casual players. Here it goes...

Reading the Headlines
Once you log in you're brought to the homepage. Here you can view this box with the names of the top 5 articles of your home nation. Click on any article title to view the full content.
The tabs on top change the content to the latest 5 articles locally or the top 5 international articles.

The green box shows how many votes an article has received.
Underneath the article title is how long since its release. It’s important when reading military orders to have the latest update . When following up on a breaking controversy the timestamp is useful to place things in context also.

Getting the full story
For a more indepth look at the news you’ll need to:
1. Either click “more news” under the news box
or
2. Hover over “community” on the top navigational bar and then select “News”

On this page you’ll be able to:
1. Read all the top rated news in your country (not just the top 5)
2. Read all the latest news in your country (not just the top 5)
3. Read the latest events happening in your country.
Events include items about wars, battles won and lost, peace between countries, laws being voted upon, laws recently passed or voted down, etc.
4. Read the news of any country in the eWorld

The left button selects the type of news: Top rated, Latest News or Latest Events

- - - - - - - - - - Other places to find articles and newspapers - - - - - - - - - -
1. A citizens profile page:
lists their newspaper under the activity section. It’s good for finding out what their opinions they hold on issues or if you’re searching for an old article for some reason!
Click for a pic of the profile page sidebar with the newspaper highlighted

2. Rankings page :
Hover over Info on the top nav bar then click Rankings (once there select newspapers as the type)
Allows you to see the papers with the most subscribers in the world or an individual country.
Quicklink to Irelands top ranked Newspapers

3. The Newstand on the Irish Forum (login in required)
A great place to get links to quality articles you may have missed. Mostly Irish journalists but occasionally used by foreign writers to promote their material.

4. Shouts
On your homepage you’ll find the shouts to the right of the news. You can only see the shouts of your friends initially so get out their and request friendships! Click on the “official” tab to see shouts from TDs (Congressmen) and the President. Reading shouts is handy way of finding articles from overseas that your friends thought important enough to mention.

- - - - - - - - - - Looking at an article - - - - - - - - - -
1. Brings you to the full newspaper so you can look through all the articles.
2. Vote for the current article
3. Subscribe to the newspaper (be alerted of future articles)
- The number of subscribers the paper already has is located beside that button

At the bottom of an article there are blue arrows. Clicking these will bring you to a previous or newer article from the same paper... depending on the direction.

At the very end of the comments section you can subscribe to the comments of the article. You’ll receive an alert whenever anyone posts a comment on that particular article. Useful if you’re using the comments to have a debate.... or an ol’ fashioned catfight!

Reading subscriptions
- - - - - The green icon & alerts - - - - -
Once you’ve subscribed to a newspaper or comment section you’ll be alerted to any new content in your subscriptions folder. Look at the left sidebar and click the green button under the yellow bell thingy.

Nothing new to read
Unread content

There’ll be an almost unnoticeable star on the green button if there’s any new articles or comments to read. However in my experience it’s best to just click and check as it sometimes gets it wrong!

- - - - - Limit - - - - -
Subscription folder holds a maximum of 50 items unless you purchase additional space (or get it free by buying gold from the admins). A full folder wont stop you getting the latest articles though. Instead the oldest item is pushed out to make room for the new stuff.

- - - - - Old comments take up space - - - - -
You may want to check your subs folder before subscribing to a comment section that’s been busy. When you sub to the comment section all the comments from that article are added to your sub folder. It’s not just the new ones arriving after you’ve subbed... the whole thing is transported into your folder. On occasions these can take a vast chunk of the space and block you from seeing any of your other subs.
Just unsubscribe from the comments, read whatever’s new and then resub to the comments if this happens.

- - - - - - - - - - Translating foreign media - - - - - - - - - -
Why?
Although alot of erepublik is in english there’s also a vast amount of media content that isn’t! Maybe you need to check the military orders of an ally but they’re not in english. Maybe you just wanna check out the media of a major world power such as Romania or Indonesia to see whats happening in their internal politics. Maybe there’s a conversation going on in the comments that you’d like in on but it’s all gobbledeegook!

How?
- google chrome - http://www.google.com/chrome
By far the easiest way in my experience. The browser automatically detects the foreign language and depending on your settings auto-translates or pops up an option to do so.
- google online service - http://translate.google.ie
Just pop in the address of the page you wish to translate and boom.... it’s done!
- google toolbar - http://www.google.com/toolbar/
For Internet Explorer or Firefox users. All the beauty of the chrome auto-translate and language detection in the comfort of your familiar browser!
- Fox lingo : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2444/
Very comprehensive firefox addon that can utilise many different internet translation services
