[Know Your Candidates] August 2013

Day 2,083, 15:29 Published in Ireland Ireland by Ian E CoIeman

August 3, 2013

On the 5th of every month the nations of the New World begin the process of electing a new leader for their country. This is by far the most important election of the month, and the outcome of this day will determine our fate for the month to come.

Let your vote be an exercise of individual choice, a reflection of your loyalty to eIreland, and a result of the careful application of independent thought.

In an attempt to better inform the voting population, I'd like to provide some essential information about this month’s elections.

Campaign Articles
It's a good idea to read the campaign articles of each candidate before voting. Campaign articles most often detail the intentions and goals of a candidate, as well as their planned cabinet.

Note: The Country President's Cabinet refers to a team of people who will be aiding the Country President in his/her duties. Important examples are the Minister(s) of Defence, Minister(s) of Foreign Affairs, and Minister(s) of Finance. For examples of past cabinets, look here. For a better idea of how Irish government is set up, look here.

I offered each candidate the opportunity to respond to some questions about their candidacy that I thought would shed some light on these elections. All answers to those questions provided to me by the candidates can be found below.
Why are you choosing to run this month and what do you hope to accomplish in these elections?

Mike: I am choosing to run because I have a lot of time this month and I believe I can help make eIreland better. I hope to continue the progress eIreland has been making by truly taking part in a serious baby boom, lots of foreign relation projects, and re-discussion of the NAP.

Sweet: I'm looking to finish the job tbh. Handing over a National Repair List is bad form. Handing over tenure of a Stable Nation is the classy way to leave! We've made a lot of progress, but I've this daft idea that Ireland should be harder to invade, while becoming a better place to be. So we grow faster and become stronger.

Fitz: why this month?.. well I'm only back recently and the reaction to some of my articles have amazed me and given me the courage needed to go for the position of president, I hope to implement some changes that are really needed in my opinion and even if I am defeated I'd hope to see the other candidates try to implement some changes in the current situation we're in.

How would you summarize your plan for governing the nation in August?

Mike: It's going to be a lot of hard work, but I have some of the most dedicated and hard working individuals as ministers in my cabinet who all want to exceed the expectations of their job.

Fitz: I plan to run the nation as best as I possibly can, I intend to pave the way to liberation but will not plan any crazy moves unless the public, and indeed Congress believe it is necessary to do so. I also hope to involve the public opinion in some of my decision making and will use my Newspaper as a relay of information from me to them and opinions from them to me.

What considerations have you made for cabinet positions? How will you be using your cabinet if you are elected?

Mike: The names will be out in my 2nd CP article. We are going to have certain tasks and set deadlines so we can track our progress and minimize down time. Me and my ministers will be working closely together on all affairs.

Sweet: There are some interesting ppl in Ireland, Achab Collins has a great presence and enthusiasm so I was delighted to get a request for MoC from him.

Rafaia joined our community pretty recently, and has brought a little Brazilian flair to the government while putting his South American experience to great use for our international relations.

I'm not allowing Apple to leave the money mines. He's kept our nation's reserve accumulating cash while keeping the national army in munitions.

Raven has always seemed a bit of an extremist to me, but he brings well researched international articles to our media and manages an ambassador program for Ireland. So I'd definitely like him to stay.

I can't remember a time when Seanan didn't volunteer his time to the Irish Army in some way. For me he is the beating heart of our national military. Continuity is key in the military more than anywhere else. However I know that he has a lot of RL demands this time of year. So it would be a great time for interested players to approach him about a Co-MoD situation.

Ian acts as a citizens' information centre regardless of an official appointment, making him the an ideal MoE.

And what can I say about Boru? He is my oldfart. A silent but deadly one. It's a bit hard to explain what Brian does!

Fitz: I will replace the Governor and Minister for Foreign Affairs but other then that will make no changes, I will allow the Ministers to make their own decisions based on what they feel is necessary but I will request that they consult with me at least every two days.

On June 19th, eIreland settled a peace agreement with the eUK. That non-aggression pact, which granted the eUK two of our regions, is set to expire at the end of the August term (September 4th). What are your plans concerning our relations with the eUK and do you intent to stay true to this agreement if elected?

Mike: I hope we can extend this treaty with some hopes in gaining another region. Conflict should be avoided, it would only further damage us as a nation more than it'd gain us experience/damage/gold.

Sweet: Back in the day Britain was not a pleasant neighbour, but that was a long time ago. UK isn't too bad to work with these days tbh. I liked the 'friends with benefits' arrangement we had with them last year: white peace with potential training wars, and the possibility of an equal region swap. That's my longterm agenda for Britain.

Fitz: As for the NAP, I will attempt to renew it and try have peaceful relations with them, but I will also press for the transfer of Irish provinces from their control to ours, should I find that they are not interested in discussing this I will consider other options although this would be a last resort.

July’s government made the decision to voluntarily allow control of Cork to fall to the eUK for strategic reasons. As an issue independent of non-aggression pacts with the eUK, what do you intend to do with this region in August?

Mike: We will see Spain's intentions and if we feel there is a threat then we don't want to take back Cork. If we can do so safely, then I embrace it.

Sweet: In July we were engaged in acitivities that could definitely have invited a retribution invasion through the Cork access route. The threat of that has waned over the following weeks, especially of late. Though it's something we'll always need be watchful for, Cork will be returned to Ireland this term.

Fitz: I will discuss the fate of Cork with both the British and the Spanish, I will do everything that is diplomatically possible (except bribing) to persaude them to allow us to take back what is rightfully ours, a move which will allow us to gain a resource we need-cattle.

As the global battle between TWO and CoT rages on, and eIreland sits independent but surrounded by unfriendly TWO nations, what goals will define progress in Foreign Affairs in the coming month?

Mike: To sustain good relations with friendly nations and not to upset our TWO neighbors. Our nation's existence on the map should be among the highest priority.

Sweet: We will continue to nuture non-aggressive sentiments amongst our neighbours, while strengthening our bonds among nations commited to and aligned with ourselves.
Raven has been working on something of much benefit to the end.

Fitz: I don't intend on leading us into a war upon assuming power, I would attempt to conclude an NAP with Spain and renew the NAP with the UK, but I will not become a puppet of TWO, I will work to gain a favourable position on the Island of Ireland but will make a stand should TWO push things too far.

Are there any special goals or projects that you plan on undertaking this month?

Mike: Several. A Babyboom Project, Democratization Project, promoting eIrish University (community project), and the Death Star Project.

Fitz: As for special goals, I have two in mind, I will attempt to get the income tax reduced and VAT on food and weapons reduced, this allows citizens to earn more and pay less, and with this ranking up becomes easier.. and hopefully such a move will draw some Irish citizens abroad back home which will increase our population.

This is a packed election going into August with four candidates in the running. How do you predict this election will unfold, and how confident are you in your campaign?

Mike: I am confident that the people of eIreland will choose the one they want to see lead this country next month. It is my only hope that people will take the time to read about each candidate rather than mindlessly voting for the one their party endorses.

Sweet: I should have a decent shot in the election, I've got a strong cabinet and documentable track record. However I always think of that Senate guy in Gladiator: "I don't pretend to be a man OF the ppl, but I do try to be a man for the ppl." I try to do the best for the community, but I can't claim to understand all that our ppl desire.

Fitz: I am nervous about this election because I know that I don't have the same amount of XP as my opponents but I am a determined person with several ideas, all I need is the chance, I just hope voters will see through the rank and relate to the changes I hope to introduce, and even if I don't win, I'll be back again next month, even more determined and if I do lose but people know who I am and what I stand for, that's a victory in my eyes.

What will this last term be remembered for?

Mike: Really I think the NAP - otherwise not too much was too memorable.

Sweet: This was a term of methodical progress, I don't believe it will be remembered much at all a few months from now.

Fitz: This last term will be remembered for survival , and the struggle against foreign occupation as well as the arguments amongst ourselves.

What will your term be remembered for?

Mike: Boosting the eIrish community, the continuance of our existence on the map, proving that given another chance one can be an honorable and great CP!

Sweet: Next term we will get to show a bit of our newfound strength 🙂

Fitz: I hope the next term will be remembered as a push forward with us Irish all co-operating towards a common goal, freedom.. but only time will tell my friend.

There you have it eIreland. The choice between these eIrish candidates is yours. Choose well.
