[WYD] In the end, it was the tax free holiday (Day 2121)
Addy Lawrence
Forward...
It's been three months since I last wrote an article. I used to write every two to three days but this game has changed so much that I really don't have much to write about. Here are some random thoughts.
On leaving eCan for eTurkey a month or so ago...
Work tax was a real bitch, I've got too much invested in companies to let them sit idle and couldn't afford to pay 20% tax to work in companies with no production bonuses.
On my time in eTurkey...
If you want to quietly enjoy the game, eTurkey is a great place to be. Large, active population, great production bonuses, plenty of MPPs.
Downside is the media is not English and neither is the politics. I was so bored I began trolling eIndia like an SOB for the sport of it.
Many thanks to UAgg for getting me citizenship when I needed it. I intend to remain in the MU while I'm a citizen of eCan.
On returning to eCan...
I don't agree with the deal with eSpain but that is why I'm coming back. Enough time has passed in eCan and enough old fags have been gone for long enough that the new players have cemented themselves here and made eCanada theirs. I like that. Like a grandfather who disagrees with how the current generation is running things, I will enjoy complaining about eCanada but I will enjoy it nontheless.
Thank-you klop for your leadership in doing exactly what I didn't want to be done, I truly appreciate it.
On the tax free holiday...
The tax free holiday is what drew me back to eCanada. Economically, it really doesn't help that much because eCan's production bonuses are still weak, but I like the message that it sends; we have changed, we are playing this like a game, and we are open for business.
So much time has been spent in the past overtaxing eCanadians that I find this tax free holiday quite refreshing and a real sign that things have changed upstairs.
The minimal taxes are going to greatly reduce prices and it is going to increase volumes, which is a good thing. I doubt it will help the tax revenues, it will likely hurt them, but eCan can deal with it. I am actually looking forward to getting involved politically again, not to become CP or PP, but to get some donations to the treasury organized so that taxes can stay low, heck, I'd like to get the import taxes down to nil as well and create a true eXanadu here for the economic egg head types like me.
Denouement
I hope this time around has staying power, my last two stints in eCan were fairly short. I've left when the going got tough and I've mucked it out under the same circumstances. I've dusted off my eCan forum account this time so maybe it will be different.
Who's your daddy?
Addy's your daddy!!!

In the end, it was the tax free holiday that made me switch:

What tax free holiday? All I hear is that Chochi is 'thinking' about the possibility. With regards to new players cementing themselves, it is true. The current CP was tapped on the shoulder by a bunch of eUS residing oldfags though, so the face may be the same, the puppet masters are still the same.
Good to have you back Addy.
Check out the latest proposals ingame
Not sure they were debated in Congress properly but half assed has always been our thang
Debate was opened for 24 hours as is required, but prior to that I started a pm thread for Congress to discuss it on the sixth.
Where?
Congress discussions arent supposed to be held in PM's so that citizens can see whats going on in Congress
Open Door Congress is where it should of been debated or in a proposal article by you or a congressman with the author notifying all congress members of the article
The Speaker dropped the ball on this one IMO but its Auk Rest so what can you expect
There was a discussion in Congress.
Where?
The was a public discussion but no formal propsal in ODC, the Speaker didnt even know if it was a 1% or 5% proposal
I made a 5% Food VAT proposal in my article about taxes. Maybe that counts.
you only make my point as the ingame proposal is 1% not 5% so how can that count
your article looks like survey results not a congressional proposal
I was never provided a template for tax proposals made via an article, but will look into that.
Also, I clearly asked what was needed in order for me to make the tax proposal to change import tax on Weapon Raw Materials. The President and Speaker were present and gave the go ahead on it. There were no requests or warnings to do it differently. But you're telling me the Executive and Legislative are doing it wrong...must not have been a very well known rule if the people elected decided it was irrelevant to the current vote.
Congressmen who feel the vote is somehow flawed can vote "No" on it to demonstrate where they stand. Unless the administrators can come in to overturn an illegal action by our government.
There sint a template and thats why I never thought ingame article proposals were a good idea
Did you notify every congressmember about your article, if not according to the CRoO you did it wrong
The CP is a new eCanadian and maybe not familiar with how things have been done for 4 years and the Speaker is an idiot
read the CRoO
There is no Congress this month, and there is no Speaker.
All of the business is being dictated to us by the EPC's parachuted in Candidate for President and for some reason everybody in Congress but myself and maybe a few others have absolutely no problem going along with it.
DMV3 talked in his article about liking and encouraging the roleplay aspect of the game, and yet had no problem completely gutting the tiny bit we had left.
"Did you notify every congressmember about your article, if not according to the CRoO you did it wrong"
I posted a link in the message thread that includes every Congressman. Probably my message was formatted incorrectly, the same as was my article.
I think I see the problem now. Congress was on holiday for many months and things got a bit slack. How about we give Congress a chance to get its stuff in order by providing helpful feedback that doesn't involve insulting the Speaker and those involved in the debates.
At this point, I'd rather take a piss on the CRoO than bother reading. But you know that's how things get when pissy with each other. I'll work on chilling out and do some reading in the mean time. Thanks for the tips, dickheads.
ah shoot, it cut my ironic wink
; )
Learning this game is such a pain sometimes. Grin and bear it, lol.
This is a different eCanada, rigidly sticking to the past isn't the way to go about things.
As Wilfie stated, any congressman unhappy with the way it has been proposed can make a stand and vote 'no'...
Mountains and molehills, you Canucks sure know how to build em...
We may have been a little lax on following the rules and I agree that it would be nice if all these discussions were held in public and in the right section but Congress was in agreement with the idea of moving tax rates to 1% after a (admittedly short) debate.
Is it worth making a fuss about? That's up to you but I hope that it's clear that no ill intent was intended in how this went forward. The idea had been discussed and Congress was in favour: we just jumped the gun (maybe) in getting the vote up without debating it (debatably) in the right place. Our democratic institutions are a little rusty after so much time so thanks for being our squeaky wheel.
No one is getting pissy with you. You're a first timer trying to get up to speed.
The problem lies with the Veteran Congressmen, most notably the Speaker, who have let all remnants of order be completely swept aside.
I knew it would happen, and that's why I ran for Speaker. Auk was chosen, and it was suggested by Homer that he should name me his Deputy because I have past experience at the job and run a tight ship. This was completely ignored and another player with no experience was named.
Then a President was elected who had no idea how we did things, and just assumed that he could do what his eAmerican counterparts do (I'm assuming). And instead of correcting him and holding him to our play style, the people who should have held him accountable were the first ones to completely support his initiatives.
As such, in my eyes there is no Congress this month. There is a PTO Executive that is quite literally dictating all decisions and the few of us that know better are left dumbfounded and at a complete lose of words.
Okay, good to hear about the pissy part, though pretty sure I felt a few splashes (or could have been rain).
So let me get this straight:
You guys lose the country for many months and finally negotiate with Spain due to the dire need for a Congress to fix the new Work Tax.
You get Congress, fix up the tax problems, and then declare there is no Congress and that eCanada has been re-occupied.
So it's like we're back to square one with eSpain holding all of eCanada...except we have production bonuses, something of a Congress, and better taxes.
eCanada just can't win. We either can't control our territories, nor control our government.
Of course I am exaggerating about that in hopes of teasing out a 'good news story' about eCanada. One exists, right?
I think you're confusing "Work Tax" (which we fixed immediately out of necessity) for import and VAT taxes which are a different thing all together.
Work Tax needing fixing, so did VAT.
Done and done. I put forward my reasons in the article I posted to Congress.
Muglack, according to the CROO I can resign and allow Auk to choose you as the new deputy. I find that would be much more reasonable than myself as Deputy. Let me know.
I think you might be exaggerating a wee bit there Muglack. The Executive did not dictate to Congress what to do. Congress was informed and asked to comment on the tax changes then voted to approve them.
Are things done in the same old well? No but not only has it been several months but on top of that our rules had changed shortly before that to take advantage of pretty much everyone's desire to work more in game (through article discussions, more PMs, etc.).
It might not have been done completely above board but it was done with Congress' consent so, yeah, it exists.

I saw how much some of those eIndians hated you trolling haha.
Strength and Honour.
Welcome back
The man behind the Ministry of Opportunity, one of if not the only party that had a clear set of goals and backed it up with action, returns.

You were so bored, you became an idiot...
Next you have to come with what are tax strategy should be going forward Addy. Your VAT strategy died when they made one currency in my opinion.
I think he agrees with me: 1% is the way forward forever. We just need to up the donations going to the treasury or win more contests (mmm 5,000 gold).
Tax holiday makes Ecanada a shitty ally....... Collect taxes and support battles with worthwhile Combat Orders
If you need combat orders to fight for an ally you're not an ally, you're a Merc.
The country is the ally, if it were up to individual citizens we wouldn't need citizenship
I don't usually bite with your comment, Rolo, but what the hell? If you're up for a bit of philosophy: why do we need citizenship?
You don't need it for joining any MU. You don't need an MU to fight for who you want. An MU can set order for any country its leaders sign an MPP with - or not even bother and just tell its member where to fight (a bazooka and an energy bar are often not worth the effort of moving but fighting for something can be).
You can travel anywhere in the world to buy food, weapons and raw material. People often bypass the market to avoid taxes altogether - the black market represents a gigantic part of the eRep economy, even with the new work tax changes.
So what does citizenship mean? You can join a party and get elected to Congress. Most players couldn't care less (and you really don't need to be in a party for much more than a day a month to get elected to Congress or become a minister, as I've proven for the past few years).
Now I can think of very few reasons why I would change citizenship in this game. I've been Canadian since they introduced permanent citizenship. But if I left I wouldn't stop being Canadian, like Goran Thrax and many others.
So I'm just curious: why do you think we need citizenship?
1% import tax should be the next phase.
You still sound cranky - you sure you were gone long enough? ; )
Lol. You clearly haven't seen his cranky. 😃
Welcome back, Addy.
Addy is still my daddy
Welcome back!
I appreciate the kindish words, Addy4CP?
We oldfags will be around for longer than you think 😉
They were kind. You did what needed to be done, not what wanted to be done, and that made all the difference. It was true leadership.
I appreciate it, thanks Addy!
Welcome back D'Addy.
You shall get your Soft Kitty when Northern Exposure is back.
Glad to see your thoughts on the tax changes. It'd be great if you could help out with rounding up donations!
Welcome back D'Addy 😉 o7
