The first thing to do when you join IRC is to read the topic of the channel. No point in floundering clueless about the whole affair, the purpose of this below article is, as the title states to help you with the IRC basics, so read ahead.

How to change your display name(Nick) on IRC ?

/nick Rajinikanth

The above line when typed at the irc, changes the nick of user to Rajinikanth! 😃

How to join a channel on IRC ? (Channels are #india, #indiarising, #TROY etc)

/join #TROY

This is to join any public channel ie., a channel which is not pass-protected. For a secure or pass-protected channel, type the channel password after the channelname separated by a space, as shown below.

/j #IndianArmy messagemeforpassword

How to message another user on IRC ?

The above command when typed opens up an IRC tab in your browser tab, so you can talk in private(also called private messages or pm's)

How to register a nickname at IRC, so no one else misues your irc nickname ?

/msg nickserv register goodboy horsewings@yahoo.com

So, if I type that above command, what ever nick I currently am using will be registered with the database and every time I visit IRC, I can identify myself, so no-one else can use my nickname. goodboy is the password and horsewings@yahoo.com is the email id, I have chosen for an example. Once done with registration, a confirmation email will be sent to the inbox of whatever email id you have provided, just follow the steps and finish your nick registration. It is usually advisable to keep both your erepublik citizen name and IRC nick, the same to avoid possible confusion.

How to identify yourself at the IRC with your registered nickname ?

/msg nickserv identify ragnarok

Lets say, I have a registered nick h3ct0r with password as raganrok, then I will be required to type that above line to identify myself at the IRC once I join as h3ct0r.
