Once upon a time, there was a king and queen who ruled a kingdom on the edge of a great forest. The kingdom was prosperous and peaceful, and upon the sudden death of the king and queen, there was a question of succession. The king and queen had two children-daughters. The eldest was bold and clever, the youngest mild and sweet. By right, the eldest daughter claimed the throne, and the youngest daughter was happy to continue her life as she always had, although she missed her parents terribly. For a time, all seemed well, but the eldest daughter feared her younger sister who was beloved by all in the kingdom. To ensure the throne would always be hers, the eldest daughter commanded her personal guards to assassinate her younger sister in the night.
A servant overheard this plot and warned the younger princess of the impending doom. And so the young princess fled into the night, dressed in simple skirts and hidden beneath a plain woolen cloak. She ran and ran until the great forest loomed before her, dark, threatening, and cloaked in mist. For a moment she stood frozen, her heart in her throat. Everyone knew the forest was haunted with spirits and a wicked beast that fed on the blood of villagers foolish enough to enter.
The spell was broken when a hunting horn bellowed behind her in the distance. They were coming for her! The princess swallowed her fear and stepped between the trees into the mist. She ran as best she could through the thick underbrush. She jumped over a small bubbling creek and tripped upon something—a root perhaps—on the other side. She scrambled to her feet and found herself face-to-face with a pair of glowing orange eyes and large canine teeth. The beast!
