[CP] TWO, Brits in Erep and More

ON JOINING TWO

The big news I’ve been keeping under wraps for a while now is the creation of a new alliance, TWO. We’ve been involved in the talks for this alliance for nearly two months now, perfecting many details behind the scenes, and I am delighted to announce to you that we are now members of this illustrious grouping of close allies, with all the benefits therein.

The four main countries in the alliance are Poland, Spain, Serbia and Hungary, and these countries comprise most of the damage the alliance can call on. All four are great allies of ours and I take great pride in fighting alongside them once again. Less powerful, but not less important to the alliance are ourselves and our buddies Slovenia, who again are longtime allies of ours; a proud nation and fantastic friends. Together we form a solid grouping of nations, a core group; highly organised and highly effective, and with many connections to other allies around the world such as in Circle of Trust- we won’t be neglecting these relationships either!

I’d like to congratulate the men and women responsible for the creation of the alliance, and long may it reign as a lasting force in erepublik.

I’m sure you’ll all join with me in celebrating our allies in TWO and look forward to the future together!

ON WHY MOST BRITS DON’T PLAY EREPUBLIK


Of late there’s been a few mental, pie in the sky articles promising expansion and conquest for the UK. I’d like to take a few lines to tell you why this hasn’t happened yet, and why it is highly unlikely to happen in the future; to the extent that anyone promising it is quite simply lying to you. I know those are strong words, but I don’t want anyone to be misled.

A quick analysis of the successful countries in erepublik show that two factors have resulted in successful ‘baby booms,’ or large influxes of players, in a simple two steps: Free advertising to get the signups, and some sort of real life hatred or socio-economic factor to get them to stay.

In the massive baby booms of the past- like in Serbia, Poland, and more recently Argentina and Chile, free advertising (or cheap advertising paid for by players) in real life media has gotten masses of signups. The relative cost of media adverts in these countries allowed this to happen, as did sympathetic members of the press that were impressed by the game. A key difference with the UK here is that our advertising is much, much more expensive and is simply not viable for even groups of players to afford.

Only once in the history of the game did we get free advertising- when Iain Keers (amongst others) persuaded the admins to advertise for us on facebook. But our new players didn’t stay, and we’re back to pre-boom population levels now.

That brings me nicely onto the second point- socio-economic or nationalistic hooks. In Serbia, a hatred of Croatia promotes conflict and got a lot of people to stay. In Poland people aren’t as affluent as here or the USA, and so don’t have as many other games, such as on consoles, to take their time up. That’s a simplification of course but as a general rule it’s held true throughout the history of the game- rich, western countries like the UK, Germany, France and the USA generally don’t get large populations relative to their RL population, but countries with other socio-economic factors or more nationalism do.

Unfortunately we don’t have either. Today’s man on the street would rather play black ops 2 for an hour than log into erepublik. Today’s politics student joins and immediately quits because erepublik is too much of a war game. Most people that join in the UK don’t find a reason to stay because of the game itself- and I’m sure you’ll all agree that the game itself is the reason that people should stay, it should be enjoyable and the main reason people stick around. Forums, IRC, all of these do help to keep some of us here but appropriately play second fiddle to the game itself.


So, to summarise. Most brits don’t play erepublik for two reasons- we can’t reach most of them, and they have better things to do with their time even if they do find it. For some people including myself erepublik is a blast, great fun; but for most brits it simply isn’t. So when individuals propose vast expansion and conquest for the UK, they really do have their heads in the clouds. At best they’re criminally insane… At worst, they’re simply criminal.



ON THE CP ELECTION

The election has taken a different route since my last article, with former CP and good friend of mine BigAnt picking up the mantle from Wayne, who is too busy to take on the role. He’s facing off against Count Drakula in what is looking like a hotly contested election.

I am sure each would welcome your scrutiny and your questions about their campaigns; our politics are at their finest when we engage with candidates and are constructive, and I encourage you all to do exactly that with these two. Likewise our politics are at their worst when we attack candidates and go negative- I want a clean election this time please, be supportive to them!




ON THE NHS

Here’s a brief report on what each minister has been up to in the last few days. Some of these guys have a consistent portfolio of work so what you read here may be similar or the same from article to article.

Count Drakula- Managing the MoFAs and MoDs, recording a podcast with me as guest, running for CP

Madacaion- Managing the MoH, MoE, Governor and MoLA.

Kravenn- Negotiated MPP with Brazil and continuing to manage relations

Jamesw- MoD orders and guidance

Boer Charel- Continuing exactly as before, running strikes

Carlini- Keeping the finances ticking over, and using the MM for profit

Betafoxtrot- Writing an article for tomorrow.




ON MOD STRIKES

The MoD would like to inform you all that we’ll, for the time being, be continuing with our Wednesday and Sunday strikes, all taking place at 8pm GMT (12:00 Erep time) in #MoD . All UK citizens are welcome to attend and get free supplies.
