The Bureau of Ambassadorial Affairs is the largest Bureau within the State Department by a margin. The primary goal is to have an Ambassador in every country who can be our ears on the ground, and in some cases to serve as a bridge for expanded dialogue with policymakers.

Indrae has been instrumental in keeping the BAA steadily moving forward. He has been with State since mid-September after a bit of world travel. He worked his way up to CTF Director before joining the Bureau as Deputy Director in November, and has been running the BAA since December. I had a chance to talk with him today about the Bureau.

Sys5: What is your overall opinion about the importance of an Ambassador service, and also one that helps new-ish players get into public service?

Indy: Having an ambassador program is important because not only does it facilitate friendlier relations between our country and other countries, but also helps us stay up to date on the status of other countries. There are always new players looking for somewhere to start out, and this is a great place because it helps them form an understanding of the game, by examining different aspects of other countries, and by interacting with citizens of those countries.

Sys5: What are the most frequent new Ambassador questions and problems?

Indy: Some of the more frequent questions are about their role, duties, who to report to, among other things. We've been working to create a clear structure for them to follow, so hopefully we'll be getting less of those questions soon. 🙂

Sys5: Speaking of structure, the Ambassadors Office is huge, with many tasks to keep it running. Are you the kind of guy who likes to rally the troops, or one who likes to get into the finer details (or a bit of both?)

Indy: I like to make sure that everyone knows their role. We have a hierarchy (Bosses, Deputy Directors, etc.) that works to make sure everyone knows what to do, and that they also have people to turn to when they need help.

Sys5: What challenges do you see in the future for the BAA?

Indy: The BAA is a massive bureau. It has been, and always will be, a struggle to fill all our positions, and to do our best to keep those people. Inactivity has also been a major burden on the bureau (ambassadors not filing reports, etc.), and we've been trying to fix that problem.

Sys5: It's been great to see you do so much to keep the BAA moving, thank you for your time.

Indy: It's been great running the Bureau of Sheep. Baa!

The Bureau of Ambassadorial Affairs is always looking for new people, you can submit an application HERE and they will get back to you as soon as they can. Most players start as Deputy Ambassadors, but in special cases some are placed in other positions. You can see a reasonably current list of BAA staff HERE.

Indrae runs the BAA, and his Deputies are comandokiller (Europe) and Myles Robinson (Americas, Asia, Oceania). The BAA is split up into seven regions, each with a Regional Boss, and right now the idea of Deputy Regional Bosses is being tested.

DanielCD (BOSS of Eastern Europe)
Daniel Dodge (BOSS of Northern Europe)
Anonymouschicago (BOSS of Southern Europe)
Joe Newton (BOSS of Western Europe)
Q2M100 (BOSS of Americas)
Aersidius (BOSS of Asia)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (BOSS of Oceania)

These people help us divide up the nearly 60 countries in eRepublik into manageable groups. Sometimes the divisions are only arbitrary, in order to even out workloads (most notably, Japan being placed with Oceania).

We try to place an Ambassador in every eCountry, and also a Deputy Ambassador in all but the smallest eNations. The Ambassador and Deputy are a team, they should both work together to compile the information for the weekly report, and also each check in with their Regional Boss once a week. They should be in frequent contact and try to cover each others weak points. Bosses help sort the information from the Ambassador reports, update the relevant spreadsheets, and relay that info to their superiors, in State and elsewhere.

Hypothetically, if we had a Deputy Ambassador in each of the countries, and a Deputy Regional Boss for each region, the BAA would employ over 130 people. That is quite nearly the size of a military branch. Through trial and error we are building up a structure in the BAA that will help everyone be more knowledgeable, efficient, and involved. If you want to become part of our growing team of diplomatic reporters, fill out the application!

Recently, livingabroad announced he was retiring from the game. Twas a sad day for the game, and State. He was the Regional Boss for Southern Europe and a longtime member of State. His contributions will be missed, and not soon forgotten.

Though we will all eventually have our time to bow out of the game, only a select few have made me cry manly tears more than this. Best of luck in all your future endeavors!
