Not Another Hospital Article
Desertfalcon
As anyone who has read the media recently has noticed, there is once again a large debate over the placement of hospitals. While the topic has always been a source of debate it seems to be gaining a lot more attention now that player retention has become a hot issue. Right now the debate is over whether or not to build Q2 hospitals in every state, advocates of the new plan claim it will increase player retention in non fortress states while the opposition claims it will cost too much and weaken the amount of damage done by the country. In this article I will examine each argument and present my opinion. First we will start off by looking at the case for Q2 hospitals.
The Q2 Hospital Plan
Pro
*Will allow those who live in "wasteland" regions to get two more fights in
*May increase player retention in wasteland regions
*Active players will still move to fortress regions for the extra fights
Con
*The plan will cost quite a bit of gold
*Q2 hospitals provide three less fights then Q5 hospitals
*Will dilute the power of the fortress states
*People will still need to move to fortress states
*Hospitals would take time to produce
The Fortress Plan
Pro
*Provides Americans with several Q5 hospitals which allows for the U.S. to greatly increase the damage done over Q2
*Makes the fortress regions expensive to attack and raises the wall.
Con
*Cost of moving people into fortress regions
*U.S. likely won't be Alamoed again (as long as we don't try to invade all our neighbors like we did before) so the large walls in CA and FL don't mean much
*Puts all our eggs in one basket pretty much (If Florida were to fall we'd be substantially weakened)

Bottom line: Both plans present large costs however The Fortress plan is much cheaper since it doesn't require the construction of any new hospitals and people would still need to purchase moving tickets in the Q2 plan to get the most out of their fights. The only real advantage the Q2 plan has over the fortress plan is that it might increase retention rates but really, how many people will be convinced to stay by a Q2 hospital? Do we really want to keep people who would be willing to reduce the amount of damage they could do just because they want to stay in their home state anyways?
In my opinion we would be better off expanding the fortress plan by building Q5s in Texas and New York, both these states are high population regions. We would still be able to keep the high walls in other regions by stationing our military in those regions and we would gain the ability to build up two other regions should Texas or New York come under attack. I don't expect this to be done any time soon but I think it would be best to put Q5s in these states later on down the road.
I'd kind of like to have a debate here in the comments and if I see some good arguments in the comments I may give you a mention up here.

So it was written, so it shall be
This debate makes me want to leave the country.
Did Desertfalcon say we should pu Q5's in Texas and New York? Even I did not go that far!
Burn the witch!
I think it would be good for recruiting new players and giving them a starting opportunity to succeed before realizing game mechanics.

Debate about strategy makes you want to leave the country Churche? Good luck finding another country in a strategy game that does not debate strategy.

ain't gonna happen
you will just get trolls on both sides saying their side is better.
I think you guys should put q5s in every state, that way everyone can be retained and can fight 5 times. max is handing them out for free
Voted cause your plan sounds just like my plan!!! http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/two-cents-for-the-hospital-debate-1152279/1/20" target="_blank">http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/two-[..]1/20

SO MANY HOSPITAL ARGUMENTS GET BORING!!!

q2's make sense because as a new player, they hit level 5 and Plato tells them to fight. So they go fight and they drop to 30 wellness and then they try to figure out how they can get to the hostpital only to find out there is no hostpital then they are screwed, they quit playing out of frustration and die. we can pretend the game is boring, but submitting to dictators you don't know is more of a turnoff than a boring game to me. the 'fortress strategy' says 'play by our rules or else scrab you, you weren't worth it anyway' this is such a great attitude to retain citizens.
i've decided to advocate q5's for every state because it seems that it's fortress strategy and nothing else...i've decided to stop reasonable debate as well and be q5 and nothing else and maybe someone will see that there are shades of grey between and if not it'll at least provide amusement for me in this GAME!
hey dudes,
you should talk with a expert on Healthcare issues like Obama.
Great article and good points!
so if we are invaded again and we are on in an important offensive retreating the less important defensive batttle would cost us a q2 hospital? i think the fortress system works very well
Hasn't Max McFarland 2 offered to build the Q2's and donate them the way he does Q5's? This would SUBSTANTIALLY reduce the cost to the government, and could be implemented in a short time.
Chile is sealing a Q5 Hospital Contact with "Fauno"
The best thing the admins could do for the eUSA is to get rid of the state names for the regions. There are no States in this game just regions and with different names like Deep South, Mid-Atlantic etc... the RL bias would mostly disappear and strategic game play would prevail ---- And we would not have to read another Hospital Article ever again.
The "Fortress Strategy" has been proven to be effective, dispersed Hospital placement has been proven to be detrimental to National Security. --- what don't you get?
More hospital articles!!!
I say the fortress stratigy works greatly, but whithout all the little hospitals in the smaller states; you have health issues whith newer players. also besides q2 we need to have a mixture. I remember when texas had a q4 before ww3. That was nice for a beginer. a beginer could have a decent hospital nomater where he choose to live. even a q2 helps to retain, but anything greater than q2 helps to draw and retain more people so that the noob players can get the healthcare they need.
@Areos-
I'm all for debate, but some of the constant bickering going on makes me think I've traveled back to pre-WWIII US, when every one wanted to play Senator. All in all reducing the amount of regions in the US to something around 12 regions would make the whole hospital debate easier, as well as eliminate RL bias.
What about Washington? Its only about 100 people behind Texas in terms of population. At least a Q3 should be placed ther.
"Hospitals would take time to produce"
Not unless your allies can help out 😉 *coughcough*
I think you may have missed one or two points here...
The goal: Player Retention.
While the welcoming committee certainly helped me when I first joined during the dark days of the eUS (ahem, the eCSA back then), it may not be helping everyone today.
I think one of the best ways to get player retention up, is also one of the worst ways: Active players actively seeking out new players and helping them.
I get on the erep chat every so often and try and see what I can do to help. I have saved one player from death already, and I hope he sticks with the game.
Bottom Line: To increase player retention we need mentors, both informal and formal.
Everybody needs to volunteer! Do your part to make this country strong!
When you have people who are too poor, too ignorant, too lazy, or too proud to go to the hospital, then you bring the hospital to them. We wouldn't be living in a just society if we decide to just let people die because they fall into one of the four above categories.
Thanks desert falcon for tying to clarify and extend debate.
Q2's in every state would prevent a lot of people quitting. Putting any more q5s up will take away the benefit of staying in a fortress region. Eventually when players learn the game they will decide to move to a fortress state for the 3 extra fights, and they'll be sure glad they had a q2 hospital to fix their silly noob mistake, otherwise they may not be here in the first place.
THis could even work with q1...
