The classic of the dead leaves finishes the cycling season. Plenty of action in Lombardia with a surprise in the end.

Paris-Roubaix winner Vansummeren and Astarloza were the last survivors of an early escape group. When the break-away was over a group with lots of favourites was made. Gilbert, Nibali, Rodriguez etc. were all in the front. Only Vuelta-winner Cobo and Voeckler couldn't bring up the power to finish this final race in front.

When Nibali escaped, with still 50 km. remaining, Gilbert couldn't close the gap, so he and Fuglsang had to chase the Italian, who was flying at the moment. Nibali had very good chances for victory, but with only 20 km. to go, he suddenly lost all his speed and was rapidly back in the peloton.

On the final climb Zaugg attacked. Van Avermaet lost connection, followed by Gilbert and later on also Basso and Rodriguez. The final 10 km. Zaugg took an impressive victory, followed closely by a group with Daniel Martin and Ivan Basso, who completed the podium.
