When RL and eRep collide
fingerguns
Stop showing people your RL pics. You're killing the fantasy.
I am operating under the delusion that this game isn't just for losers... it's for really cool people with unconventional interests. I can't keep thinking that when I see what some of you really look like.
I know it's superficial. I wish physical appearance played no part in the opinions people form, but that's not realistic. OF COURSE it matters. People don't think you're cool if you're fugly and people don't think you're smart if you're hot. That's just the way of it.
What's great about playing eRep is those barriers don't exist. You can be yourself, free of superficial judgments. You can explore the depths of your own capabilities and challenge yourself in very unique ways without doing the superficial dance that RL requires. No one looks at your screen name and makes a snap decision the way they would if they saw you in real life. Offering up your RL pic in this game is asking people to judge you on your physical appearance. There is no practical use for anyone knowing what you look like, unless you plan on meeting up or something. If that's the case, do the photo swap privately!
Please let me go on being impressed by your in-game accomplishments. Please allow me to keep looking up to you and respecting you. I WANT my opinion of you to be formed by nothing more than your personality and work ethic. I really do.
So stop showing me your pics. Stop linking me to the RL pic threads on forums. Please.
When I find out you're an acne-covered 13 year old dweeb in desperate need of braces (and a shower), I won't keep thinking you're cool and it will be near impossible for me to take orders from you. What's been seen cannot be unseen.
Embrace this world of eRepublik. Be who you really are on the inside and we will all see you that way.
Comments
If the guy in that pic actually plays eRepublik, I'm sorry.
☓D
Damn fine point, sir
HOW DID YOU FIND MY PICTURE!
Anyway I respectfully disagree. When the "Be yourself" movement hit in January 2009 it was started by PrincessMedyPi who at that time was the MedyPalin of the game. I think it's cool to see the people behind the character and I encourage everyone to show their RL pic. It gives the game a personal touch and reminds us we're playing with people with real feelings and not some robot or cartoon character that represents you in your avatar.
is this about halfie or what? ^_____________^
kyle, if you were right about any of that, then there wouldn't be so much crying in this game. Knowing there is a real person with real feelings on the other side makes no difference to people. Showing them your pic just gives them more ammunition for trolling.
interesting beans, brb, judging people in rl pic threads
If you don't like the RL pics thread, ignore it. If you see an article with people's RL pics, don't open it. And if you don't want to get closer to people and get to know them in a SOCIAL strategy game, then don't play it. And if you can't deal with a little trolling from posting your picture in the RL pics thread, then you shouldn't be posting your picture on the internet because you'll get trolled regardless if you look like Heidi Klum or if you look like the fat guy in your article. It's a SOCIAL game and part of being social is being able to give and take little jabs.
You keep stressing social... I know it's a social strategy game, but it's a game on the INTERNET. If you are dying to be social and bring superficial judgments into the equation, try leaving the house once in a while.
I would like to be respected for the work I do in this game instead of just admired for my tits, which is why I leave my pic out of it. There are some people in eRep who know what I look like in RL, but those are people I consider friends.
"It's a SOCIAL game and part of being social is being able to give and take little jabs."
Why then are the most influential, the biggest babies, i.e. MaxFail and Emerick, and let's not forget the UIP, talk about butthurt.
I agree with fingerguns on this.
😁^ And this is why Fingerguns argument has lost all credibility. When Pumpkinette says you're right urdoinitwrong.
😮)
Highlighted in the Pony Express.
But without pics, what will we fap to? Such a dilemma.
Nice article.
Ok, who got my pic and put it next to the terminator?
I demand justice.
And cheetos.
Didn't you use your own picture as an avatar once?
@ Shiny
Guess your gonna have to tug on it while watching internet porn.
loggia- yes I did. I realized quickly what a giant mistake that was. My first month in this game was nothing but sexual harassment. After I took it down, I started moving up in the game.
your RL appearance makes little difference to me. unless i thought you were hot, and you turned out to not be hot. i don't respect or admire you/anyone any less if they are ugly though. tbh, if i don't like who you are IRL, i just push it from my mind. it's not relevant anyway, except for those rare few people who end up actually being my friend. this game is weird.
i do see your point though. you can be whoever you wish to be in this game. everyone then builds up a mental picture of who you really are, so to me it's exciting to see who you really are IRL, but doesn't effect the game
LOL. Again, Dumb Emma rocks my world.
Physical appearance really matters that much to you?
~sure is shallow in here~
I agree. I enjoy seeing who I'm working with. Unlike fingerguns, I don't stop respecting someone cause they are fat or ugly.
Never judge a book by its cover. The same follows for people. This is a social strategy game to challenge people and to have fun, possibly make some good friends and ultimately see people through psychological means based on their choices or writings and even how they type. One should see people on the inside, for that is were the real person is, in the mind.
This is a relevant point. I think the dichotomy exists between those who see this game as 'social' as in why some people play Farmville to being available to talk with 'friends' they know mostly through the internet. The flip side is as this article expresses posting pics takes away from the MMOG side of the game.
I do not feel strongly about this but I agree with FG.
I'm lego Orlando Bloom in eRep and real Orlando Bloom IRL. Except a week ago when I was an ANZAC dog instead.
... looking for where I said I lose respect for fat/ugly people. Not finding it.
You can say that seeing someone's RL pic doesn't change your mental image/perception of them, but I don't believe you. They've replaced your mental picture with an actual picture. It may not change how you work together in the game, but it did change the way you see them.
Maybe the real picture is more favorable than what people imagined, so they suddenly like you more or talk to you more. Or maybe you look so ridiculously young/old, people start holding your age against you or disregarding what you say.
The age thing is probably most common for me. You can act 20-something all day, but in that pic you are quite clearly 13. Know what I mean? There has also been an instance where I was like 99% sure that a dude was super hot and he turned out to be a troll. That's less common and also has more to do with attraction than respect.
Fingerguns, you mean that's not you in your newspaper avatar. So is the fat man you or your brother. lol
lol i'm zooey..didn't you know?
>There has also been an instance where I was like 99% sure that a dude was super hot and he turned out to be a troll.
Well that narrows it down. /end sarcasm
I agree with this message the internet needs to be anonymous
I pretty much refrain from posting any images of myself online. I have never seen a compelling reason to change that policy.
hmmmmmmm, what if we are super badass cyborgs IRL?
"zooey" as in you look like you belong in a zoo? ha ha ha

😁
RL pic of me.
Who else thought of this when reading the title?

btw, Claire, if you are still here...
A SOCK.
nothing else.
muahahahaha
CHOC \o/
Choc thinks that Hugh Jackman is sexy.
😁most gay men do. Jackman is, afterall, a song and dance man.
I've already shown my picture, in fact it was my first avatar, what has been done cannot be undone.
