What next in Europe?

Day 385, 11:32 Published in Czech Republic Egypt by Franz Kafka

War is raging in eEurope – eFrance, under ferocious attack from Atlantis, is haemorrhaging regions. Is this the endgame of a localised dispute, or the beginning of a global war?

On the one side of this divide is a group of well armed, well trained and well organised nations claiming to be the standard bearer for independence and self determination for the oppressed eSwiss. On the other side eFrance and its allies from Peace - a coalition not unfamiliar with committing their own aggression, but now on the defensive and accusing Atlantis of harbouring a grander agenda for securing resources, land and power far beyond eFrance’s borders.

And on the outside a few newly independent nations, seeking to preserve their independence knowing full well that if they fall into the view/interest of either of the coalitions they could well be trampled underfoot.

“These wars have nothing to do with the eSwiss independence” claims Elvea, President of eFrance. Elvea has previously described the recent coordinated attacks on eFrance as part of the ‘Five wars of colonization (Spain, USA, Sweden, England, and Canada)’ and has warned that this is the opening play in a larger war that will engulf all of Europe and perhaps the world. “…Even if it was the release mechanism, Atlantis plans are clear and eSweden will invade eSwiss [and not grant it independence].” Presented with the Atlantis claim that eFrance frustrated eSwiss agitation for independence, Mme President countered “…we were not opposing eSwiss independence. We were negotiating with their representatives Bremer and Big Brother but Billy Bob Joe decided they were not representative…[and] he started a Resistance War…[we] fought against this Resistance War to let us finish the negotiations.”

Dishmcds, Prime Minister of eUK predictably sees things a little different. He does not see a global plot looming, or a broader Atlantis-Peace war. He also asserts that resources are only a by-product of war for eUK and that his primary commitment is to exercise his responsibilities to his allies and to see independence for eSwitzerlan😛 “Once the war is done, we fully intend on the release of Switzerland to once again be a free nation…we didn’t really have huge plans of a unilateral invasion either. There were a few people that wanted us to invade, but we stayed our course then because it wasn't something that would benefit the UK…The current set up, where we only gain a few regions, and the Swiss get their freedom is a solid plan, and just, in my opinion.”

The eUK Prime Minister goes on to state that “At current, we are not considering invading any other nations…I cannot speak for our allies, but as a nation this is the first war we've ever entered directly.” This should be some comfort for those nations of Europe that watch this war unfold with a fearful sense of déjà vu IRL.

Finally we turn to a more sinister development in the rhetoric for war. Reading the pages on eUSA in particular, and to some extent in eUK one encounters a great deal of anti French talk. As Prime Minister Dishmcds rightly highlights, this is understandable in the context of preparation for war. However this gets significantly more sinister when, in his article “Operation French Toast” President eUS ends with the call “Tuer les Francais”. Is this symptomatic of an underlying racism? Is this a threat of ethnic cleansing in France? According to Mme President Elvea the talk is verging on racist and singles out the eUSA President for such talk. Prime Minister Dishmcds disagrees and suggests he is actively challenging such talk: “I've seen no such talk. We have a lot of Pro-UK talk, but playful chatter drives activity. From what I've seen, we've attempted to be civil, and if I have seen comments that were unprovoked then I've said so.” In defence of the eUSA President, Ben Dover, he asserts “The President of the eUS…is as fair as anyone. I'm sure if he has said such things, it's merely to drive morale through his troops, and have every confidence that should the French choose to stay in the newly occupied US regions they'll be treated just fine.”

So is this really an isolated conflict limited to self determination for eSwitzerland, or the beginning of something larger and murkier – the proverbial Poland at the outbreak of World War 2 IRL? As Marianne buckles under the onslaught of Atlantis, the eWorld is watching for clues - it seems likely that eSwitzerland will fall under the yolk of Atlantis, and when the dust settles the whole of eRepublik will be watching for what Atlantis does next.

And this final ominous warning from Mme President Elvea: “eFrance citizens will resist and much more than everyone could [fore]see in the eWorld. eTerrorism will born!”
